Reads like it was knocked up in about 5 minutes flat and as a review of such a supposedly sprawling set is really very poor.

Didn't this publication give SOI and NLOTH 5 stars too?

This review is not for the tour, but for the Super Deluxe Box Set.

They gushed over Pop, too, and don't let them tell you any differently.

I've been making fun of the Rolling Stone magazine for decades how they have the artists they like that they always give great reviews to.  One of the MANY reasons I don't read it.  Generally I find it too pretentious and blindingly political.  MOJO and NME for me.

Rolling Stone will never give the band a bad review. At least as long as Jann Wenner is still running it.

So isn't TJT, arguably U2s most commercially successful and critically acclaimed album worth 5 stars? Just asking.

I'm really not seeing the problem with this review. Maybe the author didn't go into as much depth as you would have liked, but what else is there to say at this point? It seems to cover the bonus material well enough, pointing out what the author did and didn't like. It's about what I would expect a review of the second reissue of a classic album to sound like. And dropping five stars on The Joshua Tree is about as controversial as saying water is wet or fire is hot.

I agree.  And expecting an honest, critical assessment from RS seems silly at this point.  I'll just say, they did seem pretty critical of the new mixes, which are arguably the biggest reason to buy the super deluxe set.  If those aren't that good, then maybe the set should "only" get 4 stars?  Still, it's RS.  We know what to expect from them.

They gave Pop four stars which I think is fair.

I don't know if it's me getting older, or the way the internet has made it so that I can see and hear what the band does at any time regardless of how popular they are, but I really don't care about reviews anymore.  The only thing interesting about them is when they give background and insight into where the songs came from, and that's not even common anymore. In fact, I think I more frequently have the reaction of "What? That's not what that song is about" than "I didn't realize that".

Let's just say that Rolling Stone has never been "stingy" with stars when it comes to U2...
