All-Time Lead Single Poll

This is an expansion of "First Single Poll". Vote for the best one!
It doesn't have to be the best song, just the best first single.

I really wanted to pick Discotheque, but the right answer is probably The Fly.

Discotheque, just barely over Desire.

The Fly. If you are going to reinvent yourselves and intro that sound, look and feel to the world. Wow. What a way to do it.

The Fly edges Discotheques for me. Tremendous song that signals a badass reinvention, accompanied by a very cool video.

Oeeehh. Why can't I pick 3?! :( that could make it much easier (maybe).

Nice poll, though

The Fly, no hesitation. What an amazing song and what a shock when I first heard it! So different to anything U2 had done before. So inventive and original sounding. Still one of my fave songs today. I also think Desire is a great one, as is Discotheque. With Or Without You is a brilliant lead single too. Plus Numb is an ambitious one. So different sounding for a lead single.

I went for Beautiful Day.

This song propelled U2 back into the spotlight as the world's biggest band and helped to create an entire new fan base in the process.

Vertigo, similarly, formed a continuation of that and U2's affiliation with the Apple iPod didn't do much harm either  ;)

Early 2000's was a MEGA time to be a U2 fan  :)

I picked With or Without You.  I wasn't yet alive for the release of The Fly, so I didn't experience the shock of hearing it for the first time not knowing what was to come.

It seems that back then they were really daring in what they released as a single, With or Without You, The Fly, Numb, these are not the songs that one would immediately think of as the singles from their respective albums.  They've been releasing the songs that are obvious "singles" for the past 20 years, and it hasn't worked in in the past 10.

I don't think it will this time, either.  It might have a few years ago when poppy indie songs like this occasionally made it big, but the charts today are full of dark stuff.  It's all down-tempo, moody songs.  In today's pop scene, I think something like The Troubles or SLABT would do better for U2 than The Miracle or The Best Thing.

For me,

1. New Year's Day
2. The Fly
3. With or Without You
4. Beautiful Day
5. Pride

Add in a couple others and those songs practically define U2 as a band.

Went for Beautiful Day. If the band released it today, it would still be a hit. WOWY was close though.
