Miry clay. Happy Christmas, you old ar*e.

Not sure what that unprovoked attack was all about but here we are.

"Miami, my mammy" would be a line that the 'Bono-voyager' would say 'in jest" when overwhelmed. Possibly at the sight of an beautiful woman.

Miryclay, I am sorry, I thought you would have gotten the reference but I assumed too much.

You have an interest in Irish culture, thought maybe you might know Fairytale of New York by The Pogues, which apparently is just about the national anthem over there.

So that comment was meant to be a bit of friendly banter. Sorry.

If you don't know the song, though - you need to know it. It's beautiful and absolutely genius.

You should have put a <pogues>Miry clay. Happy Christmas, you old ar*e.<pogues> tag around it. I would have got it. It was too much of a leap. No harm felt or taken.

You took the risk of comedy over being labelled offensive and for that I applaud you.

Count me as having a second mind blown by the Jolson connection. You could argue that "Miami" is just an updating of "My Mammy."

I also totally agree with Bundang Dave that "Miami" is Pop's "Bullet" thematically. It struck me that way when the album came out, and I'm convinced that's why they paired them live.

In terms of Laoghaire's other questions, I don't know what to call the Miami/Bullet character. In terms of the studio vs. live versions, I'd say it's so-so on the album but a powerhouse live. It was one of the tour highlights in DC.

I always saw the pairing of Bullet and Miami as being about immigration to the US, and Miami specifically. He even throws in the chorus from West Side Story’s America to further make the point.

Just looked up the video and I didn't see any black face.  I can catch the Jolson reference though.

No blackface from Bono!!!!!! Whoa!!!!

It was Al Jolson who did the blackface.
