Any National fans here?
« on: April 26, 2019, 11:36:03 AM »
Can't seem to find anyone who loves The National like I do. I just returned from Toronto seeing The National screen a short film, have a Q&A session, and play their yet to be released record "I'm Easy to Find" along with an encore of Buzzblood, Fake Empire, About Today.  I think playing 12 songs no one has heard before is a pretty balsy thing to do.  I think High Violet, Boxer, and Trouble Will Find Me are stellar records.

I can’t call myself a fan but I do dip in and out if their material quite a bit. Sounds like a great night!

Absolutely. Love em.

Their shows are mindblowingly excellent. Building and building to incredible high points.

Intelligent writing and amazing musicianship. Something of a deep voiced American radiohead....

Yeah!  Glad to see some fans here!  I guess I never thought about a comparison to Radiohead...what do you think is similar?

Musical complexity, musical talent, not instantly accessible but reward those prepared to dig in with a few listens and still crafting albums rather than songs...

I prefer their last 10 years to radioheads though for what it's worth...

I would agree with that.  I've seen both bands in the past and more recently.  I've had both Radiohead and The National periods of heavy listening.  Radiohead came first,  but I love the lyrical and syllabic cadence of Matt Berninger.   Do you have a favorite National record? I go back and forth between High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me.

I love High Violet but I'd have to say sleep well beast is right up there.

Looking forward to the movie and the new album.

Have you watched the opera house show on the trouble will find me tour? That was pretty amazing

Definitely a fan but more recent stuff has not maintained their standards. bit underwhelmed by the new songs I have heard so far. Songs like About Today, Mr November and Fake Empire from their earlier work are awesome. Love the use of About Today in the movie Warrior. Works really well. apparently the writers of the movie had the song on repeat as they were writing those end scenes.

I have not seen the opera house show.  I will look into that.  Thank you.

As for the post comparing older vs. newer stuff...I like the 2 new songs well enough.  I wouldn't say as much as a lot of other material but there are definitely 3 or 4 songs I heard last week from the new record in Toronot that I'm looking forward to diving into.  And of course Rylan finally made it onto a record.

Listening to the entire new album now. Very happy with it despite being underwhelmed with the first 3 songs released. Matt's voice is just so calming. Lots of female singers featured on the album too which works well.

That Sydney Opera House concert in links above is awesome by the way. If you like The National, you simply have to watch that.
