Breathe Lyrics....
« on: April 02, 2020, 11:07:59 AM »
Anyone else connect some Breathe lyrics to current world condition?  Any other U2 songs you might interpret in the context of COVID19?

Man at the door says if I want to stay alive a bit longer
There's a few things I need you to know

16th of June, Chinese stocks are going up
And I'm coming down with some new Asian virus
Ju Ju man, Ju Ju man
Doc says you're fine, or dying

Walk out into the street
Sing your heart out
The people we meet
Will not be drowned out
There's nothing you have that I need
I can breathe
Breathe now
Yeah, yeah

We are people borne of sound
The songs are in our eyes
Gonna wear them like a crown

Walk out, into the sunburst street
Sing your heart out, sing my heart out
I've found grace inside a sound
I found grace, it's all that I found
And I can breathe
Breathe now

To me Breathe is more celebratory, so I don't really connect it to the current situation. I might when this situation is over, though.

I'm thinking "Numb" comes closer to describing what I'm feeling right now.  :)

I hear you, there!

The line "I'm coming down with some new Asian virus" .... "doc says you're fine or dying" of course is obvious, then I thought the lines "walk out into the street, sing your heart out" conjures up the images of people singing and clapping for all the medical workers that I've seen from several countries.

Let's just hope that soon we will all be able "breathe now."

Yes; I noticed the strange parallels to our modern times, too.
The new Pearl Jam album really hit it out of the park regarding capturing the zeitgeist.  Check out "Alright", "Seven O'Clock", "River Cross".

  • Time is irrelevant, it's not linear.

My own personal interpretation of the lyrics of "Breathe," and No Line on the Horizon, in general, is this...

We lived in a f***** up, scary world...  New things are always coming after us, whether it's anxiety, doubt, fear, addiction, war, new Asian viruses, etc...  And there's only one way to combat those things:  love, and being brave enough to just get up off your ass, fortify, and push yourself out there.  We already have what we need to get through "this" right now.  If only we could see that or hear it for ourselves, it can set us free...

Errr...  maybe just check yourself before you do the "walk out into the street" part...  for a while, anyway...  Stay safe, kids.

To me. this great concert opener and song goes with the the animals of zoo. Adam "screwed up" (ill nce in his career) in Australia once, came to reinfrce the band. "Cocatoo" was a safer rhyme than cossaowary. Someone said: whoah! this is Larry drummi'n! Quick! What animal can i put into…. I take it there must be an animal thread somewhere.

Thanks for reminding me about this song.  It is amazing how events in the world or in your life can make you see songs in a new light and lyrics will fit what is happening at the time.

When NLOTH was released, I read a couple reviews that said the theme of the album was a discourse on the "end times".  The "end times" being the end of the world as we know it or facing the inevitable end of your life.  I also think that is the theme of the album. During what seems like apocalyptic times in the world, do you react with selfishness or love?  In Breathe, someone comes to singer's door to tell him he's going to die (and probably with a pamphlet in hand about the end of the world). He rejects that person's "cockatoo" but then finds he because of a "new asian virus" he has to face the fear of dying.  The singer decides to not be defeated by fear and selfishness:

"Every day I die again, and again I'm reborn
Every day I have to find the courage
To walk out into the street
With arms out
Got a love you can't defeat
Neither down nor out
There's nothing you have that I need
I can breathe"

It is easier said than done, but is still a great message.

What The Edge called "joyful defiance." (Or was it "defiant joy"? :) ) Either way, I embrace the sentiment.

After this discussion, I decided to look at some videos of live performances of Breathe. This is the best one that I found. It brought back good memories of the 360 tour. Hopefully, we will be able to attend arenas next year to see our favorite bands: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
