Will.I.Am to produce U2's next album????
« on: December 10, 2008, 01:54:56 PM »
So, I was checking out Kanye West's blog and came across an entry which stated that Will.I.Am is going to produce the new U2 album. What??? I'm not sure if I can believe this...Here's the link:

and here is an additional entry I found:

The Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am is producing U2's new album, according to Kanye West.

As a piece of news, it seems blatantly false. Yes, U2 have been working for ages on the tentatively titled No Line On the Horizon. But they have been working for ages with the pristine talents of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois why would they swap these illustrious talents for the man who brought the world My Humps?

And yet, well, why would Kanye lie? Yesterday's blog declaration was relatively unequivocal. "WILL.I.AM IS PRODUCING ON U2'S NEXT ALBUM," Kanye wrote, caps lock key evidently stuck. "I'M SURE IT WILL BE DOPE AS sh** JUDGING FROM THE CRAZY BEATS HE'S DONE IN THE PAST 3 YEARS!"

However, the neon-sunglassed rapper did not say that Will.I.Am had taken over for Eno and Lanois. But neither did he say that Will.I.Am had stumbled into the studio and accidentally flipped a switch. Unless Kanye West is just misinformed (and this is possible), we surmise Will.I.Am is just working on one song. Or a B-side. Or a remix. Or, er, a practical joke?

To be frank, a Will.I.Am take on U2 is the most abhorrent idea we have heard this year and the year is almost over. We are great fans of Kanye but when it comes to Mr I.Am we must respectfully disagree. The man's production makes us snooze, and any team-up with U2 will, we are certain, make us want to crawl under the duvet in the foetal position. Just to make it go away. Also is Bono going to rap?!

While I respect Kanye and his great talents, I think his blog entries should all be taken with a grain of salt.  He could have chosen a better choice of words when writing this particular entry, but mistakes are made.  Will.I.Am did mention in a recent billboard.com article that he spent some time with U2 in London, insinuating that he may have contributed to the upcoming album.  But by all other accounts that I've seen, the album is still being produced by the Eno/Lanois team.

I'm with you in thinking he may have helped produce one particular song or mix - most likely a "B-side" (do we still call them that?).

U2 has been known to have a main production team and have other producers come in for individual songs when something is missing.  I wouldn't be surprised if Will.I.AM. is involved.  I think it would be cool.  If you look at the last album there are songs that have different producers per song.

He probably won't do much since the album is basically finished, just a few remixes of songs I think. Or he's just visiting them.

Well, I didn't read the blog and I don't really follow Kanye, but what little I've seen, the guy does exaggerate items quite often.  This is probably one of them.

If it isn't, I think the one or two song option or B-side option is likely.... There is also that minor possibility that there is a 2nd album lurking in there, which supposedly explains the delay we've had with No Line on the Horizon. Remember that... we're staying in the studio quote to keep the creative juices flowing that we heard late last summer.

I guess anything is possible.

Maybe it'll be a double album and Eno/Lanois is producing one disc and Will.I.Am is producing the 2nd. That would be a big contrast....hhmmm....now that I think about it.....it's a stupid idea.... :P

It looks like a piece of information has been stretched beyond the facts to me.

"Rumors have now been confirmed as fact..."? How do we know this? It didn't even give a source that I saw.

I hope he's not involved with it...or if he is, I hope that it's just very, very minimal....

He is in the Black Eyed Peas with Fergie. My cousin actually works for the people that represent them and John Legend. I'm the only one hoping U2 is working with him.  My reason is because if there is a link between the two, however small, maybe my "wonderful" cousin could get me a U2 ticket for New York next tour. I know, I am really stretching the "I know someone" theory but anything is worth a try where U2 is concerned!
