Oh and I do have a question. I was under the impression that Original of the Species was written to one of Bono's daughters. Is that so? If it is, the following lines become somewhat disturbing.

"And you feel like no one before
You steal right under my door
I kneel 'cause I want you some more"

Good question.  I think I have heard them say at different times that the song is about Edge's or Bono's oldest daughter, but there are some lines that don't fit in with that.   I love the song either way but I would be interested to know what the deal is with that.

That's what I thought.....

Anyway, one lyric that makes me cringe is:

Your love was a lightbulb, hanging over my head

Strangely that may be my favourite line from Achtung Baby.

I love "An Cat Dubh" but can't handle the heavy breathing during Edge's solo . . . I would put it on a mix CD for my dad, except I think he would not be able to handle the woofy sound.

I don't want to keep bagging Ultraviolet (it's a great song) but another line that makes me cringe is:

I guess that's the price of love,
I know it's not cheap

^^

That's a famous quote from some feminist, so it's not just another silly Bono-ism.

The ATM line from moment of surrender. It ruins an otherwise fantastic song.

Or all of Boots - or all of Unknown Caller

ALL of Unknown Caller? I can understand the chorus being cringeworthy to some, but not the verses. "I had driven to the scene of the accident, and I sat there waiting for me" is an awesome line I think.

No, not all of it - those silly computer lyrics.

Haven't read the whole thread so don't know if this has been mentioned already, but I really cringe at the end of the album on Cedars of Lebanon when Bono sings the couple of lines about the soldiers getting oranges from the tank .... awful ....  :-X

not much criticism of the new album yet..?  here's a bit i can't stand from it:

- "i wasn't gonna buy just anyone's cockatoo"...love this song, hate this lyric.  it throws me off and it's a shame because i absolutely love the pre-chorus, saying he's got to "walk out into the street with arms out, got a love you can't defeat."

- with the exceptions of a few lines in "boots", the only valuable part of that song is the bridge...scrap the rest.

- unknown caller is alright, though fairly mediocre, 'til it hits the verse where the whole band sounds like they took a xanax before hitting record.  i was pretty surprised by this one and it most definitely ruins the song for me...i hit skip everytime  :-\

Ok, here's one of my favorite U2 songs, but is has a line I really detest.

Vertigo: "Girl with crimson nails has Jesus round the neck, swinging to the music, etc."

I hate that part. But I love the rest of the song. :)

I think everyone is over-thinking this whole question (and, in most cases, failing to stop and open your minds to the subtle beauty and poetics turns of phrase).

Grace, for instance, is an extraordinary song, dealing with one of the most challenging concepts of Christianity while employing Bono's classic God-as-lover approach. It's stunning.

Trying to throw your arms around the world is supposed to be babblings of a drunk stumbling home. My God. Doesn't anyone take a second look at the lyrics or read the interviews that go with them?

Sad state of intelligence around here.

haha, i think it's less about over-analyzing and intelligence and more about taste as in fine art...i love klimt and miro, but there's pieces of theirs that i could absolutely do without even though there's charm enough in them to make them at least partially appealing even though i don't appreciate a particular brushstroke here or there.  the same goes for music...instead of visual, it's aural art and it should be treated and scrutinized as such because it all holds multiple meanings for each of us.
