Why U2 need to 'glam it up' this tour...
« on: May 05, 2009, 08:44:25 AM »
After listening to the new record alot over the last couple of months, I began looking foward to the tour.

However, I fully believe (& hope) that the band are planning to 'glam it up' this time around. I was so joyed to see Bono taking off those shades & wearing eyeliner for all the promo earlier this year. This needs to return! That's right. Songs like 'Get on Your Boots, 'Stand Up Comedy' & 'NLOTH' need the bright stadium lights, they need Bono in Zoo TV/PopMart mode, they need that dark yet slightly humours edge (no pun intended) when played live y'know?

This shouldn't be the standard jeans n t-shirt rock tour like the last two tours. NLOTH is a fairly expressive record & I just feel they need the spice they deserve live. Anyone feel the same?

I wouldn't mind a bit of a return/re-boot to a slightly Zoo or Pop feel...

Same here. Everything I know of those eras is from youtube, unfortunately. I would have been four or five back then, so not really aware of U2. ;)

I think this tour will have a little of both. I mean the stage is HUGE!!! That's POP. Then Bono wearing eyeliner. That's ZooTv. The walkway. That's Elevation and Vertigo.

Macphisto was on Zooropa Tour not on Popmart, but I get what you mean.

I agree, it's very important to have innovative tours that shock. U2 need to build on the new stage, this tour has huge potential, I liked the Vertigo tour, and it's the only DVD concert I have, but I get the impression it was lacking a little bit a spice, like you said. It was a tour of playing brilliant songs, that was the highest grossing tour ever for U2.

Yep, I agree

The last 2 tours have been fairly straightforward in terms of presentation and song selection.

I'm not saying they need to incorporate a giant hydraulic lemon into proceedings, but I'd love to see some playful innovation.

I was really heartened by Edges comments about mixing up the set-list too. I think the band should give us a good selection of new stuff and drop some of the live stalwarts in favour of bringing back or re-working lesser played songs. They are blessed with such a huge back catalogue, so the possibilities are endless without having to alienate half the audience.

The performances of Boots at award ceromonies earlier this year were definitely a nod in the direction of Zoo TV anyway.
