Can the Edge read music?
« on: June 05, 2009, 08:13:34 PM »
In a conversation the other day I heard a person claim that the Edge can't read music.  She also claimed Bono can't either.  How accurate is this claim?

it seems like he would need to read music to play the piano....but maybe not?
i had to learn how when i played...
which would mean bono and edge both can...

I wonder if Larry can read music? He took piano lessons when he was young, and when I learned how to play drums and percussion in band, I had to learn to read music, so I'd assume he did so with Artane Boys Band or whatever else he played with?

Yes they can! Adam was taught how to play Bass and Larry was taught to play Drums - both come with learning to read music.

Bono cant play guitar so there really is no point and The Edge writes down all the songs in note from so I can assume he can read them!

That's what I thought. I know the Beatles had to teach themselves to read music.

Edge took piano lessons as a child, so I assume he can read music.

I was an honours music student (flute) for over 12 years, and I can't read music. :'(
I know what the notes are, if I hear the song and see the notes, I can usually muddle-thru and memorize it.  I am pretty stubborn so was determined to memorize, but I can't get a sheet of new music and start playing it correctly - I had to have heard the song to do it.

You played entirely by ear? :o

Oh by the way, I count knowing what the notes are, seeing the notes, and taking time to get it down correctly as being able to read music.

Watch Daddy's gonna Pay for Your crashed Car from Sidney, he has a music stand propped up there. At 2:53

Good point, but it may have just held his setlist. If I could see this stand and inspect it, I'd be able to find a sheet of music real fast.
