Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me Popmart Tour - Shock?
« on: June 15, 2009, 06:56:52 AM »
Inspired by a response or two in a thread about shocks on tour, this song was said for the Popmart tour. I don't think it was personally, but why do you guys think it was? I think it was natural that a recent-ish single would be performed live.

It was played on this tour with the condition that it would never be played again, ever.!

I think it was a Shock because it was one of those "one-off" singles, where it didn't accompany an album, so it stuck out a bit from the other songs. It wasn't as well-known as the rest of U2's catalog because it was all alone.

It was perfect for the show. Larger than life... and it fit the theme... a rockstar feeling out of place in his own skin... trying to balance it all...
"they want you to be Jesus, they'll go down on one knee, but they'll want their money back again if you're alive at 33... you're turning tricks, with your crucifix, you're a star!"

The imagery is too great NOT to use on a show like Popmart!

I didn't realize that the song was hated!

Great performance of a great song, and I can't see why it would be a shock to anyone. That song is loved by folks who are not even die hard fans. The should bring it back, it would fit well under this amazing stage.

Just for the record, I love this song. It just surprised me. And Bono's coughing and swearing at the start came out of the blue. :)

It was more of a shock in the way it lead off the second encore. Keep in mind, this is before lots of people used the internet to look at setlists, so the shock factor was much more intense...

Ahhh, the days before published setlists! I think my reaction to hearing the song (and realizing what it was) was largely similar to Bono's utterances at its start: "F*** YES!!!!!"

Me too, especially since it sounded like he was at war with an amphibian in his windpipe.

Must've been some big ar*e phlegm ball.  ;)

Not sure it was really out of the blue though, since he did it at every show.

Well, let's see here. I was three during the PopMart tour. Hence, I didn't go. When I watched the concert film, that surprised me.
