I thought Bono's hair looked the best right before ATYCLB. The Beautiful Day video is a great example.

Bono's hair has always been ginger. He dyed it black pretty much from high school on. He is letting it go natural now-- or, back to his natural color, not necessarily to the color it is now.  ;)

There's not a single difference in his hair in the Q Magazine and the opening night of Barcelona. Some days it will look thinner than others. It's clearly shorter on the Q cover and when it grows out enough it naturally takes up more space on his head and covers up any thinned area. When you grow your hair out it straightens, it lays, and it each hair is thicker at the back. So the hairline is thinner than the end of the hair. So when it's long it looks odd.

And like has already been said hair at least looks thicker when it's shorter. There are different styling options that give a fuller look. I see nothing that shows he has had any work done. If he had I'd imagine his hair would be a lot thicker now than it was and it wouldn't be noticeable. Hair can be that way, especially when you keep it so long most of the time.
