I agree with Boom Cha... generally the third album in each trilogy seems to branch off in a slightly different direction than the first two. That may be the case here.

But based on some things Bono has been saying, they seem to have "dreamt it all up again," and the new album could be as different from their recent albums as Achtung Baby was from Joshua Tree.

I guess we have to wait 58 more days to find out... ;)

War sounds different from October and Boy. And Pop is pretty different from Zooropa and AB. So I don't think just because the third album sounds different, and it usually does, it shouldn't be considered part of the 2000's trilogy.

they should make another under a blood red sky of the new tour, that would be cool.

Agree, after 3 'Best Of' albums it's about time we had another full live album

But those have fallen out of favor in the music industry, replaced by DVDs featuring full concert presentations.  I'm not saying live albums never happen anymore, but they've lost their exalted status from just a couple of decades ago and, since U2 are consistent and prodigious about releasing concert DVDs to represent their touring, I think their days of UABRS and (1/2 of) RATTLE AND HUM type releases are behind them...

Well maybe they can do what they just did with UABRS and release a dvd and live cd.

You never know on day while sitting Bono may think "we should bring out a new live album" then Larry will detest and fight Bono then a few months later Bono will release a live album just to prove Larry wrong!

If nothing else, it will complete the triptych of really long album titles. Remember when they were all 1-3 words long?

Man, a bunch of most excellent points made on this thread!  My fave is that Horizon with hopefully complete the Joshua Tree/Achtung Baby Triptych, that would be so cool.  It is amazing how everyone agrees, that although the last two albums were excellent, we all want something with a new sound soooooo bad....Because we know this band can do it.  Don't you feel sorry for people who don't like U2?

Perhaps he'll just have to remind Bono how this all started and release it as "The Larry Mullen Band - Live"  ;D

Don't you feel sorry for people who don't like U2?

I alternate between deep pity and extreme disgust.

Bono wouldn't approve of that!  ;)  Love and peace...or else.

But Bono was talking about breaking the monster's back...does that mean we can break people's backs?

In retrospect..all these years (and albums) later, it seems Boom Cha had a great point and it kind of worked for NLOTH.
Now the question is: For the first time ever there are two very obvious releases as a pair (Songs of Innocence/Songs of Experience), what happens next?  Is some version of Songs of Ascent going to cap of the series?  and the albums, period?

I see the pattern in a different way. It seems that they create two "similar" albums and then create a third album different from the previous two.

I see it this way:

Boy/October: two similar albums, but then War is something completely different.

The Unforgettable Fire/The Joshua Tree then Rattle And Hum. Obviously different utilizing blues and classic rock.

Achtung Baby/Zooropa then on to a different kind of experimentation with Pop.

ATYCLB/HTDAAB.....No Line on the Horizon...?
