Edge's birthplace
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:34:42 PM »
Hmm..

Just noticed on U2.com that in their article about tonight's concert they refer to Cardiff as the Edge's birthplace, yet in U2BYU2 he says he was born in London (I've also read that in other sources). Can anyone clear this up? Very strange. Seems like either the Edge or his band's official website is wrong...

To quote The Joker, "If you're going to have a past, make it multiple choice!"

Edge was born in London, but the whole Evans clan is from Wales.

Yes but U2.com specifically refers to Cardiff as his "birthplace". I find this irritating because when they come to Dublin everyone, with u2.com as head cheerleaders, makes a big hupla about "the boys coming home". They then play Cardiff and erroneous claims are made to a member being "home".  ??? ???

I guess people's roots can be from more than one place. Cardiff can be home (or Wales at least) but Dublin can be homier. I'm from Derry but haven't lived there for 18 years. Where's my home? Derry or London? I can say "I'm going home" every night, but also every Christmas.

I think it's just about trying to find a connection between the band and the audience at the concert, whether that's a city (e.g. Stay in Berlin), a country (e.g New Year's Day in Poland) or neighbouring countries (e.g. snippets of Miss Sarajevo sung in Zagreb). Or even members of the road crew when they're at "home" e.g. Phil (?) in Glasgow and Pete Williams in Sheffield.

And of course the band own many homes all around the world now too. Maybe that's why it was A Sort Of Homecoming, and not A Homecoming :)
