Looks less than 3 inches to me. If you own the camera, you could definitely try measuring it :)

Length of the lens when the camera is on and ready to shoot.

Actually I hear that each member of the security staff will be equipped with a small tape measure, and will be conducting spot checks throughout the night. 'hey! You! Bring that camera over here, i need to measure the lens'.

Seriously, when that baby is switched off the lens is inside the body anyway.

I was able to get this into the Vertigo tour

i was at chicago 1 last night. security check was minimal, just the obvious out in the open stuff. i was in the inner circle near a guy who had a small camcorder and another guy who had a digital slr with about a 6" lens. TIP----- the guy with the dslr said he separated the lens from the camera body and put each in a separate pocket of his baggy cargo pants. (i.e., not easy to detect unless they patted him down). ymmv. he also said 'you wont get it in unless you try, and you have to be willing to go back to your car and wait in line if they catch you."

Point and shoot cameras are fine so don't worry.  A very nice man in the pit/ inner circle by me had a huge SLR Nikon and got it in no problem.  I personally wouldn't encourage or do that to chance getting in or turned away, or worse but I'm sure his pix are amazing!

Two questions...

I am going tonight and am planning on bring my DSLR camera with a zoom lens (although it isn't very big). I will be doing what the other guy did and wear some baggy cargo pants (not too baggy though) and seperate the lens and the camera body.

1.) Did any of you guys see anyone getting patted down at all? Or were they simply just checking people bag's and whatnot. I've been to many concerts, and never was patted down... but I've also never tried to sneak in a DSLR.

2.) What time did they start letting people with reserve seats in? I figure if I get caught trying to get in, I will have to take the redline back downtown to my work to put my camera in a safe place. This would take about an hour. I honestly don't mind missing Snow Patrol, but I want to make sure I have plenty of time before U2 takes the stage.

Depends on how big your lens is but if in doubt, don't!  I don't know about reserved gate checking & other cues in the GA gateline but they weren't really patting down at my particular turnstile.  Just checking bags.

My lens is not big by any means. It is probably 4 inches when its not zoomed, maybe 6" when it is zoomed out.

Men have no idea how to measure stuff.

We always say something is 8 or 9 inches when it really isn't.
