They didn't play it in London, but did in Chicago 1, and I assume will stay for good. I couldn't quite understand what the guy was saying-- it was the video with all the things floating around. Sounded inspirational and I would like to look it up.

Are you talking about Bishop Tutu? It's an entire speech.

I wasn't quite sure what that was either. Didn't understand it nor have I seen it before. Wasn't played at Chicago 2... strange.

No, not the Tutu speech. It sounded more like prose than a poem, but I could be wrong about that. And the video was of things floating in space, like a wedding ring and a Bible-- those were the 2 images I remember. I think it went right into Ultraviolet. Maybe someone at one of the later concerts can keep their ears open for some of the language and look it up!!! (Or maybe they didn't like it and we won't see it again!)

Southsy - Its Maya Angelou speaking but I'm not sure if that's something she's written or is reading another writer's poetry.
I've got a short clip of that spacy video playing with her speaking & the bear in it.

Come on, Maya (God bless her!) definitely sounds like a dude--she's got a lower voice than me, anyway. Listen to that YouTube clip, and you'll understand. So thanks to p8ru2, the mystery is solved! The poem is called Brave and Startling Truth, written and delivered in 1995 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. Here's the portion that is read over the video:

We, this people, on a small and lonely planet
Traveling through casual space
Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns
To a destination where all signs tell us
It is possible and imperative that we learn
A brave and startling truth

We, this people, on this small and drifting planet
Whose hands can strike with such abandon
That in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living
Yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible tenderness
That the haughty neck is happy to bow
And the proud back is glad to bend
Out of such chaos, of such contradiction
We learn that we are neither devils nor divines

When we come to it
We, this people, on this wayward, floating body
Created on this earth, of this earth
Have the power to fashion for this earth
A climate where every man and every woman
Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
Without crippling fear

When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, we are the true wonder of this world
That is when, and only when

(And then Mama Maya sings this):

When it looks like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore, God put a rainbow in the sky.

I kind of wish they would have subtitled it. And I wonder if they’ll use it again! It’s a beautiful poem. Full version available here:

Anyone else notice that the song played in the background of Angelou's speech is "Theme from the Swan" from the Passengers album?!

I noticed they've alternated the Maya Angelou piece with a (particularly heartbreaking) poem by WH Auden, 'Funeral Blues'. I remember it in Toronto, and I think at least one other date I was at. It's one of my favourites, but it does seem an odd choice for a concert.

Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
