The National check them out boxer is amazing.
REM?
Muse
Radiohead
Coldplay?
The Killers.

The National = amazing I agree.
Boxer should be considered one of the greatest albums of this decade.   :D

And all these bands you have listed are big bands...It might be a stretch to think any of them want to open for U2 (I mean it would be cool to see Radiohead but opening for U2?  I just can't imagine it).  Coldplay?  No way.  Muse perhaps for North America, I have my fingers crossed.  But aren't there some smaller acts that you wish to hear before U2?
Silversun Pickups maybe?  Who else do you like to listen too?

What about Guster opening for U2?  Or Cake?

I wouldn't mind a blast from the past with the Alarm even though I know that won't happen. For those too young to remember, this band ranked as high as U2 for their emotional live shows. They were nothing short of amazing and complimented U2 's style of music as an opening act in those days. You did not leave the same as when you went in to that show. Legendary!

I think either if these two would be as amazing as any contemporary band but I don't think younger fans would really be interested in either of them.   Oh well......I can dream.  ;)

Ah, The Alarm.. you just made me a little homesick StrongGirl - I'm from the same part of the world as them (from the same town as Mike Peters) and I used to feel quite excited about that when I was younger (still do a little - that area hasn't really produced any other famous bands, let alone one who've supported U2).

I've been reading this site for a while but just had to reply to this. I wasn't a fan as I didn't hear their music that much so didn't get chance to get into it, but you've inspired me to see what I can find lurking around the internet and give it a listen.

SG, I'm with ya on the dream that Clannad would open for U2.  I love them, but have never had the opportunity to see them.  That being said... I really did enjoy seeing Muse this tour and surely wouldn't complain if I got to see them again. ;)

Hi WelshGirl!  Welcome. I hope you come by to chat more often. I just saw Mike Peters do an acoustic gig in a small club in Manhattan in July. The feeling in that club was magnificent that evening. It was as amazing as it was back in the 80's. What an amazing performer and songwriter!  Give the stuff a listen. The only thing I will say is it is best experienced live, but I have a hunch you will enjoy it ! It is very complimentary to early U2. ;)

THERE YOU GO! I love The National! I saw them open for REM in 2008 and I have been hooked ever since. They do have a record coming out this spring, so you never know!

Thanks for the welcome StrongGirl! I've found a few Alarm videos on youtube including a live version of 68 Guns in Germany in the mid 80s and some more recent live footage. I quite like what I've heard so far. Mike Peters (billed as The Alarm) is touring the UK next spring, and there's a gig in my city - I'm quite tempted to get tickets.

As for the original thread, I'd love to see Snow Patrol or Kaiser Chiefs but I think they may be too well know in Europe to be an opening act.

Please not Glasvegas! I saw them at Wembley 2 and disliked them so much I couldn't face watching them at Cardiff.  Scissor Sisters I'd quite like to see.

A friend of mine lent me their album and I was seriously underwhelmed.
