I love the piano at the beginning....LOVE IT.  Very Lush.

I love the way he sings we were Hot as hell...sounds cool.  The "summer sings in me" lyric is very profound...

They cut the song by a minute; the string section in the beginning has been cut.

Glad they're gone. I like Coldplay and "Viva La Vida", but there was too much of a resemblance or "nod" to that portion of the song.

Doesn't help that Eno produced both of them.

I think they replaced the string section with a much shorter piano part; some of it sounds similar. Now that I hear the full thing, I'm not quite sure what to think. I like the way Bono sings it on the new version better, but I find that around halfway through it begins to plod a little, so I prefer the more upbeat instrumentation from the old version. The new lyrics are mostly good, but I'd call it a 50-50 split from one version to the next.

After watching the movie the Last Castle, this song became amazing :)

but i think i prefer the older one, but this version grows, and the ending is amazing

I just wish the intro was longer, that piano is great

The Brothers version, especially near the end has a great orchestral feel. Wasn't the Linear (YouTube version) track kind of a demo anyway? It sounded like it was mostly just Eno on his keyboard.

Also, didn't they release two different cuts of Hands That Built America? The version in the film Gangs Of New York featured Andrea Corr, the Best Of 1990-2000 track did not. So who knows, we might get another cut for SOA.

Just watch; they'll do a NLOTH and open the album with "Winter" (Linear version) and close it off with "Winter 2" (Brothers version) as a bonus track on the iTunes pre-orders and Deluxe versions of the albums.  ;D
