Title: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Appreciation Thread!
Post by: drummer120 on January 16, 2010, 02:03:31 PM
Basically, just tell which hard rock/heavy metal bands you like, why you like them etc.

Some of my favorites are: Bon Jovi, Metallica, Guns 'n' Roses, and AC/DC.

It's not really my cup of tea.  My brother was into this kind of music in a big way in the 80's.  He says that Grunge killed it off.

I used to quite like The Scorpions.

Newer School: The Answer, Mastodon, Volbeat, Tool, WolfMother, Opeth

your bro should start listening again. I walked away from it for about 8 years myself, but the '00s have brought some incredible songwriting to the fore. Indeed, some of the best - and certainly the most fearless - songwriting is to be found among bands that have come into their own this decade. Bands like:

Nightwish
Opeth
Mastodon
Meshuggah
Tarot
Sonata Arctica
Violator

are bringing the metal arguably better than anyone in the genre's past ever did. That's just a few of thethe bands changing metal for the better these days.

I'm definitely a fan of the more hardcore stuff... Linkin Park and System Of A Down are among my favorite bands. I'm also pretty big fan of gothic metal (Evanescence, Within Temptation, Nightwish) and Nine Inch Nails. A few of my guilty pleasures are also mainstream radio-metal bands (Shinedown and Breaking Benjamin).

Ooooh I love gothic metal, especially with female vocals. Nightwish is one of my all-time favorites. And I must admit, I love a lot of 80s hair metal bands as well. :D

These aren't really hard rock or heavy metal though. Linkin Park are nu metal and Evanescence are pre-Emo to put a label on them!

Evanescence is Pre-emo? Are you joking? This is same problem everybody seems to have nowadays... thinking the goth and emo are the same thing. Emo=annoying people shrieking and moaning lyrics about how their life sucks. Goth=dignified, vaguely menacing people who actually have fashion sense and play good music. And even if they were pre-emo, I still would hesitate to call them such, since Amy Lee is such an amazing singer and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the word "emo".
Title: Re: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Appreciation Thread!
Post by: hurricane hugo on January 20, 2010, 05:49:29 PM
Emo started out as "emotional hardcore", exemplified best by this band:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQUS6dDczus

the lead singer would sing himself to tears every night, hence the name. he went on to co-found Fugazi.

back to your regularly scheduled thread.

I wouldn't really class Bon Jovi as hard rock or heavy metal!  :D

Anyway, I've been partial to a little hard rock over the years, but I'm more a fan of alternative rock myself. Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, that sort of stuff. I am a pretty big fan of Marilyn Manson as well, have been since Mechanical Animals came out. I know he's kind of frowned upon in heavy metal circles but I love the guy. Nothing they've done has been as good as MA but I still like a few of the album tracks and singles. Mechanical Animals is just sublime from start to finish. Quality album.

C**k rock? never heard the term before, but it pretty accurately describes a good portion of mainstream rock radio nowadays. (i.e. Nickelback, Hinder, Buckcherry, et. al.)

Yeah! But there are some many different genres to choose from I thought I'd classify them in with the others I listed so as I wouldn't need to start a ton of different threads.

People are welcome to mention bands that aren't exactly hard rock or heavy metal, but that are close enough.

If you even think you're into hard rock or metal, you must check out Montreal's Priestess. Their latest album came out in October in Canada, but it's finally coming out here in the USA on February 2. I used to quite like The Scorpions.

I used to quite like The Scorpions , TOO

My trouble is I never stopped quite liking The Scorpions

Me & my girl, Jeri are very keyed up for they are coming to AZ in July ;D
We might haul ass from LasVegas after the RUSH show in Aug ( Rush not in AZ this tour ! ) & Go to Colorado
And see Both RUSH ( Aug 17 ) & Scorpions ( Aug 16th ) AGAIN !

Last night I picked Jeri up for a night out & she had purchaced the new Scorpions - Sting in the Tail
As we drove to our various destinations we got to listen to the new album
on my upgraded factory Infinity subwoofer stereo in my new Soul
Sound's like vintage Scorpions, Very basic, great vocals
We spent 30 minutes parked in her driveway  ;)
while we listened to various tracks again & talked about our summer Rock Road Trip ( AZ - NV - CO )

BTW - Isn't Bon Jovi Country Act now ?
Like Kid Rock, Kid Rock is the "headliner" @ "Country Thunder" here in Phx next week, he, Kid, even has "Rock" in his name ???

Don't see AC/DC - Dio - Scorpions - going "country"

My thoughts exactly. WTF x 1,000,000

The control freak that he is, I figure he's being a prima donna about asking for a "break." Two things will happen. One, he will come back to Dream Theater and it will be as if all this never happened. Or two, a new drummer will come into the picture and this will allow Petrucci, Myung and Rudess to shine in the song writing department.

Love hard rock and metal; however, I don't like bands whose logo's are indecipherable and have cookie monster vocals or are over-the-top satanically.   Having gone to several Ozzfests, it's like all the bands on the 2nd stage were different in name only.

I'm not much into the intended genre discussed, but when I do, it is probably more on the pop side.

Bands I've liked at different times have been:

Tool
Porcupine Tree (it's stretching it, but they had a few hard albums)
Rage Against the Machine
early Korn albums.
Metallica
Pantera
Scorpions

Outside of Porcupine Tree and Korn, I couldn't even tell you which albums I liked from the other bands, I just remember enjoying them when my old roommate would listen to them.  Porcupine Tree is the only band listed that I own all their albums, but then again, few of their albums really fit the genre.

Still a guilty pleasure of mine even though I have somewhat outgrown the genre.

My favorites are:
Black Sabbath (w/ Ozzy)
Van Halen (w/ Dave)
AC/DC
Ozzy Osbourne (w/ Randy)
Judas Priest ('Sad Wings of Destiny' to 'Screaming For Vengeance')
Iron Maiden
Rage Against the Machine
Thin Lizzy (w/ Phil)
'Ace of Spades' by Motherhead

I don't know about you guys, but I'm always disappointed at the lack of metal touring acts my area gets. I live in desolate Central California, a secondary market, so most "big" rock and metal acts pass over this area in favor of LA, San Jose and San Francisco. Tool and Paramore were here recently, but they're very mainstream. Mayhem Fest was here years ago. Wish there was something I could do to get more touring acts here.

any hard rock fans here every listened to Ace Frehley (of Kiss) '78 solo record? I grew up a Kiss fan from my older brothers but never really gave a serious listen to their '78 solo records. I've read a lot of good things about Ace's album so I decided last week to give it a listen and it's actually a really good hard rock album. More hard rock then every Kiss album other then maybe Hotter then Hell. It also contains the only hit from the solo albums in New York Groove, and has some really good songs like Rip it Out and I'm in Need of Love. He plays everything but drums which are done by Anton Fig of David Lettermans band.

Great to see the King back out there after the health scares of the last few years. Hoping to get to Toronto.

Never been a KISS fan. Sorry. And after the whole R&R Hall of Fame BS, they lost what little respect I had for them. I do however love the whole thrash thing. I'm from the Bay Area, grew up with the guys from Metallica, Exodus, Testament, etc. In fact, I'll be spending some time with Chuck Billy from Testament and his family this weekend. But aside from the musical aspect, there are a lot of things that the average person doesn't know about the metal/thrash community. It is one of the most close knit, amazingly loving, charitable communities you will find in music. They not only do unprecedented benefits for their brethren in the metal community, they will turn out in droves to help out a fan. There was a couple that were huge fans of the Bay Area metal scene and they were involved in a motorcycle accident a few years ago which took the life of a man named Jeff Davis and left his wife, Nikki, in a coma for a long while, to only wake up to the fact that her partner of 15 years had been killed. Her medical costs skyrocketed and when the metal community heard about this, Robb Flynn from Machinehead and a good friend of mine, Craig LoCicero who was the guitar player for Forbidden and now in a band called SpiralArms, got together and managed to get members from Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Forbidden, Vio-Lence and many more to do a benefit for Nikki to cover her medical costs. Every time one of their own (and by their "own", I mean not only those in the industry but their fans) is in need, regardless of what they have going on in the careers, they drop it and rush to help. I've been involved in the music industry for over 25 years and I've never seen the kind of love and respect anywhere as I do in the metal community. There's no such thing as being "too big" of a band in that genre. They always ensure they are accessible to the fans and ego seems to be a ridiculous concept among them...the exception being a certain drummer from a previously mentioned band that is the one dark spot amongst all the bright ones. Ahem. :)

And with my love affair with the metal genre, my número all time fave band of any genre is...you guessed it- our boys in U2. I get teased a lot by my metal family but the respect they all have for the the musicianship of U2 is universal.

I'm not as familiar with King Diamond as I'd like to be but I'm sort of thinking about going to the Pittsburgh gig.

I'm the same way.   I never got teased for it though.

Nice post. I'm a Kiss fan but I can see why a lot in the metal community don't like them. Kiss's music is more straight ahead rock then metal.

My older brother is a metal fan and he got me into Iron Maiden when I was young. They are about as heavy as I will go. He is a huge Slayer fan but they aren't my cup of tea.

so what drummer were you talking about? Lombardo or Ulrich?

From what I've read Lombardo doesn't have many good things to say about Slayer. Supposedly he was making less then $100,000 a year from them and claims their management stole all the money. When he wanted to hire a auditor the band let him go.

Not Dave. He is a gem. I know both sides of the split story and they both had valid arguments. Sometimes, all the brotherhood in the world and all the love can't repair the all too familiar "creative differences" thing. Along with the fact that money was a huge issue. I used to date a bass player in one of the more well known metal bands and as big as they were, they'd go on tour, play festivals in Europe (either headlining or second headliner) to sold out crowds, some as many as 80,000 in attendance and then come home and have to borrow money to cover the mortgage payment on their house. Aside from the obvious Metallica success and they have absolutely become filthy rich, Slayer is the only other metal act that actually has gotten what most would consider rich from what they do. And that's not because of the album sales or the tour. It's because it's members have invested wisely in other areas. Money was a huge issue with Lomardo and the Slayer camp. Dave felt like he hadn't reaped the rewards in the same amounts as the rest of the band but it was mostly (not completely) due to other investments.

I may be the only person who thinks this but maybe there is a second.......

I researched quite a bit on finding similar bands to U2. People mentioned Radiohead, Coldplay, Simple minds etc...
but for me they were not even close...IMHO.

For me, the closest band to U2 is METALLICA! haaa.
(Lars Ulrich is a massive fan of U2) Maybe its because they change the 'sounds' per album which is similar to U2's albums...

But back to the thread...

1) Metallica
2) Linken Park
3) Avenged sevenfold (The new album - Hail to the king)
4) Guns and Roses (original band material only)

In the last 24 hours, I've had two different acquaintances (both in the radio biz) tell me this rumor:  at Wolfgang VH's urging, the VH brothers have recently begun to mend fences with Michael Anthony. Seeing as they're already trying - and seem to be succeeding - to make nice with Hagar again, whispers are spreading of a massive 40th anniversary tour next year involving both Dave and Sammy.

Mind you, I put absolutely no weight or cred on anything coming out of the Van Halen camp until it actually happens, so I'm not buying it for a second. I should also point out, however, that a DJ on a local radio station must've heard the same rumor, because he was talking about it on air this morning.

Anyway, yeah.
