Why, beg Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno to produce our next album, of course. :D

Good as these bands are, I hope they get that they will not be "the next U2." There will be no "next U2." There will only ever be THE U2. Viva U2!

Even in 10,000 years time there will never be another U2!

You know, that's also why Peter Gebriel makes an album every 10 years...because every time he's 10 years ahead of everyone.

For me, at least.

I'm pretty sure Chris Martin was relieved that his band's lead single literally was miles above U2's (considering he went into full-on U2 mode with Viva La Vida). I don't think Get on Your Boots is really anywhere near as good as Viva La Vida was. I'm sure NLOTH will be a killer album though.

Oh and if there's any justice in this world, Radiohead's In Rainbows will win album of the year. But we all know that's not going to happen.

Coldplay are actually planning to release an album this year...

I agree though Viva La Vida, Violet Hill, Lovers In Japan, Lost! and Life In Technicolor are all leagues better then "Boots". The albums as a whole...well lets wait for March 3rd. Then I'll give you an opinion from a fan of both.

In Rainbows winning would be laughable. Viva La Vida has it for sure...they owe Coldplay Grammys from A Rush Of Blood To The Head.

Kings of Leon are under recognized by the Grammys...

Just as The Killers can not touch the U2 of the past, the U2 of the present (Vertigo and beyond) can't touch (but heres to hoping they do) the Killers today.  Its hard for me to admit this, as I have lived most of my life with a single .mp3 CD of U2s Discography in my car... The Killers material is just more fresh, dynamic, and spontanious then what U2 puts out these days.  This is as it should be since U2 has been around for oh ~30 years.  The first 2 Killers albums are probably some of the best albums ever made, amazing that a band these days can put out albums that one can listen to from start to finish.  I just hope the public is smart enough to catch on or they will backlash against them like they did to U2 with Pop.  There is only so much someone has to say and I am beginning to think that Bono is losing touch :) . Coldplay is are pretty good to... but they don't make whole albums, and Chris Martin sweats Bono so bad its sad, even mimicing his stage antics... at least Brandon does his thing.

Cool, another Killers fan!  8)

They're my 2nd fav. behind U2. I do think that Hot Fuss was a much better album than How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. Also, Day & Age is pretty amazing, but I'm hoping U2 can top it.

The thing is U2 has done so much more than The Killers. And, they probably wouldn't be around if it weren't for U2.

But, if any band is the "next U2" it's going to be The Killers, not Coldplay.

Viva La Vida is a really special song.  I'm a U2 fan first, but that single and many songs on their last album are incredible.  U2 will have to do much better than "Put on Your Boots" to compete with the standard Coldplay has set.  I'm still optimistic that NLOTH will be great.

Viva La Vida is probably the best Coldplay song I've heard. It has some good lyrics, unlike the songs from X & Y. I don't think Coldplay will ever be able to knock U2 out of the water, partially because Chris Martin doesn't have anything like the power in his vocal delivery to do so. I just think that they're far too conservative and neat to be a great rock band, they've got to be prepared to get their hands dirty.

I prefer Coldplay over The Killers because The Killers sound like a crappy retro band doing covers of some obscure crap band from the 70's.  For years, these bands have pumped out this kind of Ďretro-revivalí business and it seems that when every year ticks over to the next, instead of creating something thatís truly original they just rehashes someone elseís idea that was big 20 years ago and try to put a new spin on it, and I think thatís a bit disappointing. At the end of the day, if you donít have originality all you are is a lesser version of someone else. Iím hoping that weíll see a return to more artistic values in music, because commerciality had f#@ked the industry in a lot of ways Ė the central intention and priority behind popular music is a financial one and thatís a real shame, Iíd really like to see more abstract music come to the forefront. Abstract music=no bands like The f*&king Killers.

I consider this one of the most valuable releases of the last decade from probably the most constitant and reliable band in the world.

But that's just me.

Pfftt...In Rainbows was an amazing album. Their use of rythm was great. And the percussion was top notch.

Viva La Vida will win the grammy though, but who cares about Grammy's? They're overrated. It's more of a popularity contest. I did enjoy Viva La Vida though.

It seems like not many people here like Coldplay's new album, I for one thought it was fantastic.

But really Radiohead and M.I.A. deserve it more.

The first 2 Killers albums are probably some of the best albums ever made

Really? You're saying that, in terms of eclecticism, atmosphere, innovation, start-to-finish quality, distinctiveness, uniqueness, artwork, quality of tea the band drank* and so forth, those two albums genuinely stand up to this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/The_White_Album.svg) and this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3b/Dark_Side_of_the_Moon.png) and this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/Achtung_Baby.png) and this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/Odelay.jpg)? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am saying you'd better have some stunning arguments otherwise.

*Americans aren't tea drinkers, on the whole, so the Killers might be especially deficient in this crucial area when it comes to making popular music's highest pantheon.

Most of Codplays album KILLS get on your boots...even the Killers Day and Age is way better than U2's first single so far...

doesnt mean NLOTH won't possibly KILL both of them back when it gets released.  ;)

I LOVED "Hot Fuss"...one of the best albums of the past decade. But since then, The Killers haven't dazzled. "Sam's Town" was alright, but definitely not as good as HF. The new album "Day and Age" is a DISASTER.

They tried to blend some musical styles together. It didn't work. Human ended up being the best tune on the album.

Coldplay: I agree with a previous poster- although a good band, they are too "proper" to ever become as good as U2. I can't see them "getting their hands dirty."

It reminds me of the movie/documentary "Dig", about The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Anyone ever see it? Althought the Dandies had the commercial success, the lead singer of Brian Jonestown (Anton) was always considered the "genius" in that music scene. The lead singer of the Dandies even admitted that Anton was a genius, but said something to the effect of: "To be like him, I would have to let myself go, and I don't think I can ever let myself go THAT far."

Sorry for the tangent, but I feel U2 are to Coldplay as The Brian Jonestown Massacre are to the Dandy Warhols.

(Except in this case, U2 still has the commercial success)

coldply's new album is FANTASTIC. i think they are just gonna get better and better. which is a good thing for u2, it SHOULD keep them on their toes for the "best band battle". kings of leon, friendly fires and the killers are all gonna keep the pressure on, as they have all released brilliant music in the last few years. i wasn't too keen on sam's town, but day and age is a better effort from the killers, not as good as hot fuss, but still good.

BTW, i think eno MUST have told u2 how good viva la vida was when he began work on NLOTH. i don't think viva was released yet when he began working with u2 on the new album. i may be wrong. this surely must have made u2 even more determined to make a GREAT album.

i have also noticed, when bono has been asked in recent years about who u2 were competing with for the best band mantle, he mentions kings of leon and the killers, (see Q magazine interview as one example), does he not rate coldplay? or is he running scared?

The Killers and Coldplay and even Radiohead won't come close to U2 until they can actually move beyond their current sounds.

Could any of them ever pull of rockabilly tune like 'Jesus Christ"? Or actual "rock & roll" tune like "Desire"?

Or R&B/Soul inspired stuff like "Angel Of Harlem", "In A Little While", "Stuck In A Moment"?

Or even a reggae cover of Johnny Cash?

I don't think they have it in them. They're simply not that talented. They do "rock" music. They do it very well,
but all they do is white "rock" music.

I think you can safely say that Radiohead have moved on from their original sound! I mean comparing Amnesiac or Kid A to Pablo Honey or The Bends shows that emphatically.

yeah, but it's all still very european white rock music.

They couldn't pull of something like "Angel Of Harlem." Or "Slow Dancing."

There is no American music in anything they do(well, maybe a little Jazz). And that's a huge flaw.

Bit Amerocentric...

What used to be interesting about Radiohead, and what for me makes their 2000-2004 period brilliant, was the general suggestion (it was hardly a hybrid or synthesis, but still) of classical music in the dynamics ("2+2=5") or rhythms ("Everything In Its Right Place", "Go To Sleep") or chords ("Idioteque") of some songs, along with electronic music and jazz, and it all made for eclecticism without essentially ending up with Odelay. With In Rainbows, though, it seems they've cashed that all in and made a Coldplay album instead. Rubbish.

It's very amerocentric. But it is what it is. R&B/Soul/Rockabilly/Blues/Rock & Roll are an American thing. The Stones did it. So did The Beatles. and Zeppelin. and The Who. U2 dabble in it.

It's boogie.

and bands like The Killers will never be able to pull it off.

Day and Age is not a "DISASTER". No way.

Hot Fuss was a great album. Since then, The Killers have probably felt the pressure to continue putting out good albums.
In the case of "Day and Age" and "Sam's Town", most of the songs don't sound "natural" or "inspired"...

...they sound "contrived."

The best art comes to the artist naturally. When the artist tries to "force out a masterpiece", they often fall short of the mark.

Chris Martin and Brandon Flowers cannot hold a candle to Bono.

That was until Get On Your Boots came along, now Bono is in terrible danger of losing his throne.

Human is much much better than Get On Your Boots.

Sometimes I wished the roles were reversed and it was U2 who penned Human and The Killers who made the mess that was Get On Your Boots.

Cheers,

hehe, Human. I don't mind it but, "Are we human or are we dancers?" is probably the single worst lyric of this decade.  ;D

It was all going so predictably well.

Coldplay's new album went straight to No 1 in the UK on Sunday, selling 300,000 copies in three days; concerts sold out; that iTunes ad was everywhere.

Even their notoriously sniffy critics in the music press seemed, with the odd exception, unusually muted.

Then, things took a sudden turn for the worse - with a plagiarism row.

Yesterday, the band was forced to issue a categorical denial of allegations that they copied the title track to their new record, Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends from a little-known US group, Creaky Boards.

In a video posted on the video-sharing website YouTube, Andrew Hoepfner, Creaky Boards' singer and songwriter, claimed that the melody of Coldplay's song, Viva La Vida, is pinched from a track he wrote last year called, ironically, The Songs I Didn't Write.

He blamed Chris Martin for the alleged artistic theft, saying that Coldplay's frontman attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York last year.

"He seemed pretty into it...Maybe TOO into it?"

The clip, which was first posted on Sunday, rapidly went viral. (See clip below)

By last night, it had been watched by nearly 300,000 people, many thousands of whom had typed comments remarking upon the various similarities between the two tracks

That's old news. And I never hear songs from The Killers, Coldplay or U2 at clubs. But then again none of them are really suited to the club crowd (except for maybe the occasional Killers song...remixed).

But yeah to be honest Viva La Vida > Get on Your Boots > Human

Human was played a lot at just about every dance club...it was #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play

Have you considered maybe he's never heard of Discotheque because it came out 12 years ago?

I thought that Killers tune was saying "Are we human, or are we denser" which I think makes much more sense, and is actually kinda a cool lyric.  Is there more to our existence besides this flesh and blood?  I will have to check the lyrics somehow.

It's actually dancer. They ripped it from Hunter S. Thompson.

Actually, I thought "dense" in that context meant "stupid". So - are we human, or are more stupid than that?

At least there is originality in using "dancer" in the lyric.

Unlike Coldplay who have learned to master plagiarism and midtempo snoozing.

Cheers,

J

"and bands like The Killers will never be able to pull it off."

How do you define "pulling it off"? I would say between Hot Fuss, Sam's Town, Sawdust, and Day & Age, The Killers have covered most of what you have listed there

Agreed. With just 3 studio albums The Killers have "pulled off" a number of different genres. Haven't you heard the Caribbean beat of I Can't Stay? The Americana of When You Were Young? The heavy metal disco of Somebody Told Me? The spaceage dance number of Human? The glam rock of Neon Tiger? Do I really need to continue?

The only thing The Killers have pulled off is making crap retro music.

"All These Things That I've Done" had a great gospel influence as well

Oh yeah! How could I foget that? That's my favorite song!  8)

Hey, Revolver7, I'm pretty sure a lot of the Killers haters will be jumping on the bandwagon within 2 or 3 albums.  :P
