Title: Best spot to stand in GA for 360 Tour?
Post by: smyth260 on April 07, 2010, 07:47:52 PM
Hello fans! I asked this question on u2.com as well but didn't get much of a majority response. Me and my friend attending only one U2 concert in Edmonton this summer, and we made sure we got GA tickets. My question is where is the best spot for the best experience? Where was your best experience? We can't camp in line unfortunately, but we can arrive at the line at 5AM the day of

We could do front row inner circle...would 5AM be early enough (Edmonton on a work day?). This is what I've had in mind all this time, but lot of people said you aren't that close to the band (I want them right in my face), you always have to look up, and don't get the light/video screen show. Apparently you get bumped a lot and cannot move or dance!

We could do back rail inner circle. You get the video screen  and light show and are really close to the band when they do go out on the catwalk. However they always face the other way don't they! But I remember them spending the majority of their time in Vancouver on the main stage.

We could also do the front row on the outside of the catwalk. THis seems the least tempting to me, but some reccommend it. Watching the videos of all the views on some website, it looks so far away from the main stage.

Where was your best experience and why? Thanks guys!

Front of outer circle/back of inner circle.

Front rail is overrated.

How tall are you?

I am 5'1", so being in the inner circle = severe neck strain.  On the catwalk rail, though, you get an unobstructed view of the band.  This past fall in Charlottesville Adam's bridge stopped *directly* in front of me, and the band spent a significant amount of time on the catwalk.  Plus I did not have to turn around when they came out that way - they were right in front of me!  I did not think that I missed a thing.  And I had something to lean on, which is a big plus after all that time in line.

But if you are taller then you might want to go for the outer rail of the inner circle.  And you will get in - people were queueing at 5 pm and still getting spots.  Good luck!  :)

Those are some great pictures. It certainly makes me rethink that spot. It seemed like they were in front of you every song! The one problem I have is that the main stage is too far away in that spot. It seemed like they used the catwalks way more in Vancouver. But man that is right in front of your face that I want. Where does bono touch hands and pull up people and stuff? Is that the front rail outside of the elipse where you were?

PS: Hilarious captions!

Actually I was at the back of the inner circle for LA (by choice) and that was just as good, and about 4m closer than the outer rail. You get a better overall view from a bit further back in my opinion, and the sound is much better.

Oh my, brisco, nice pics!  I've only been to one show, and we were front row outer rail (catwalk).  I thought it was good because you could see the screen and some of the  effects, yet for part of the show, Edge was right in front of us.  They seemed to move around a lot at our show (Norman).  I did like leaning against the rail, too.  Oh, also, I believe you mean you're going to EDGEmonton. :)

the best spot in any stadium show is right in front of the sound desk.

pretty much the best spot at any gig, actually.

Front of outer circle/back of inner circle.

Front rail is overrated.

I agree 100%,
of the 4 GA gigs I attended in Europe last year, we got to the back centre of the inner circle twice, and it was a superb vantage point.
However, the place I really want to get to is outside the inner circle but at the centre point at or close to the rail. I'll be trying to get there for Seville & Coimbra.
You are looking straight on and see more easily whats going on,and theres no turning around which happens a lot when you are in the inner circle.

This is a show as well as a gig, and when you are at the very front, the show part cannot be fully appreciated, when hanging back a little you can get a better appreciation for the show.

Thats a great shot by the way !

Briscoe, I'm thinking not only were you in the best spot in Vegas, but you also must have a great eye and a pretty good camera.  I could have stood in the exact same place and I most likely would have taken crap pics.  But pics or not, the outer rail is a great spot.

I was one line of people back from rail on the outer circle sort of between Bono and Edge and it was a FANTASTIC spot.  Not only did I get quality BEdge time (which is always good in my book), Adam and Larry walked past several times while making the rounds (Larry even stopped in front of me during IKIGC Remix and it was like being in a rave with Larry), and I was fortunate enough to have Bono drop to his knees right in front of me at the end of that song.  It was a perfect vantage point, I could kind of see what was happening with the stage (although to see the stage, it really does require being in the stands, hence why I went to Raleigh on a whim just to see the claw perform).  Charlottesville was weird as I walked into the gate at 5:30PM and was one back from rail which I was a little put off by because I felt I hadn't put in the effort to deserve such a great vantage point.  It's the best place to see the whole band though.  You could also see them move across the entire stage area so if the bridge had gone way far out to one side and Bono or Edge was on it, I could still see it just fine.  Once I'm out of Spain and am on my own computer I'll post some pictures for you!  Hope that helps!

If you were going to a show that I was going to attend, I'd say WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO FOR OUTER RAIL EDGE'S SIDE.  But since this is for a Canadian show I say go for that.  If you can't get in the first couple rows of the rail, just go for the middle of the pit.  It's a blast to be in the fray.  I think there's more room to shake what yer mama gave ya in the pit than on the rail, esp. if the guys are anywhere near you.  Everyone tries to jockey you out of position so they can (OMG) touch Bono or whatever.  That said, I also have been on the back rail and enjoyed that (although I prefer Edge's side to Adam's).  You've got good sound, you're close to the main stage and when the guys come by on the catwalk you're right there.  They do look out quite a bit but they usually take time to turn around and address the pit too.

Jeez, don't think I've ever seen so many people dissing the FOS area.

For me, my best experience for 360 was FOS, right under Bono's mic. Yeah, it took a lot of waiting (overnight at Vancouver, in some pretty cold temperatures), & a little luck. Yeah, the stage is pretty high, making it hard to see Larry (but I don't believe it's much higher than the Vertigo stadium stage was, if at all). Also the screen is way overhead, so can't really be viewed from this close, & yeah, it's crowded up there. But there's nothing like the energy right up front, with Bono working the crowd.

Don't get me wrong, the outer rail of the catwalk is amazing. Great views across to the main stage, & the graphics of the screen look superb from here. You won't be able to see much of the lighting of the CLAW, but hey, you can't get everything. You'll actually get closer to the band here than FOS. That's because the catwalk's only 4ft high (compared to the stage's 8-9ft) , & the rails are much closer to the catwalk than it is to the main stage). But unless you're lucky, or really do your research, you won't get anywhere near as much time close to the band as you will up at FOS. They just spend a lot more time up at the main stage. It's not like the Vertigo stadium show's, with their b-stages, where you knew exactly where the band would be performing, when not on the main stage. Plus they'd perform full songs out there, Miss Sarajevo & Love & Peace Or Else out on the b-stages was amazing. But for 360 these views, close to the band, were quite fleeting.

I'm a shortie (5'6"), so not a big fan of the back rail of the inner circle. Had a spot here for the Rosebowl show. It was pretty spectacular to see Bono performing out towards the masses, especially as they used more lighting of the crowd for this show, but I guess it'd be better to have the band members performing towards you, than be looking at their backs. Also from the back rail I found it quite hard to see over people, to the main stage. Outer rail is way better in this aspect, looking straight across the catwalk is way better than looking at the back of someone's head.

Didn't spend any time during the shows out near the soundboard. I did however spend time in seats for the encores at Vegas, & the views of the CLAW were quite spectacular. So there'd definitely be plusses to being out near the soundboard, along with the better quality sound of course.

So from my experiences I'd say,
1. FOS
2. Outer rail of catwalk
3. Back rail of inner circle

But, if I was only to see one show, I'd probably go along with the masses here, & vote for Outer rail. It gives you more of an overall view of the show, as the visuals of the screen can be seen. Plus the sound here is better than FOS.

So let me revise my suggestions,
1. Outer rail of catwalk
2. FOS
3. Back rail of inner circle

I was at the front of the inner circle at rail pretty much in the center but slighty to Adams side, ( which was great cause Bono generally hung around there )
I got in line at 330 am, and although there was approx. 100 people in front of me... I ran faster then I had EVER run before.  :D :D

This time, Im sleeping over and getting the exact same spot :D

What I would say is that getting there 12 hours earlier than someone else does not get you a 12 times better spot.

You could rock up at 5 or 6pm, have a lovely afternoon at home or knocking about town, and get a spot 3 or 4 back on the outer rail.

Sure, I got to the rosebowl at 8am, but got to Vegas at 3:30pm and got largely the same spot, LA inside the circle, Vegas outside the circle. But about 5m difference. Or whatever that is in archaic US measurements... 25 and 2/3 fathoms or something.

Never really understood the sleeping overnight in parking lot thing, but perhaps one day I'll give it a shot.

Thanks Zooey, although as you know, some spots are better thsn others (that outer rail's got your name on it doesn't it).

I've decided to ban myself from taking a camera for SLC. Want to be more in the moment, for at least the 1st show.

LOL!  Didn't we say the same thing in Anaheim?  "We're not going to take pics.  We're just going to enjoy the show"  But I know I ended up with near 100 and you ended up with well over that.  I keep thinking that the emptier my pockets/hands are, the faster I can run to the outer rail (oh, how you know me!).  I just don't know if i have the willpower not to bring the camera.  We'll see.  If you can resist the temptation, more power to ya!

I didn't bring the camera to the Rosebowl - only Vegas.

Would say I DEFINITELY enjoyed the show and got into it more.

Am only a stills photographer anyway. Can't for the life of me understand why people film entire songs on their crappy quality camcorders and watch the show through a screen.

So to answer the initial post... best place to stand is NOT behind someone filming sh** for youtube.

Does RZ1 and VIP package give you access to the outer rails and inner circle . I hope so those are my tickets night 1& 2 in Montreal , that is why I anxiously waited to for the presale for those tickets and paid the high end prices .If I get there by 2:oo will I have a good chance to be up front ? Thank you.

If you're there by 2 for RZ you could be first in line, giving you the choice of spots along the outer rail in your Red Zone. I have no idea about VIP, but I suspect that the regular GA crowd gets in before you will both nights, making a run for the outer rail difficult. Inner circle doesn't fill for hours, but you probably won't get on a rail. Never know, though. Wear running shoes!

I was RZ for Chicago 2 and got in line around 4. Got rail in RZ and had the time of my life. Nearby porta potty, private concessions and no pushing made for a wonderful night. Oh, and Adam played to us all night long, with several 'visits' by Edge and Bono. Larry played nearby once too.

Good luck, and most of all HAVE FUN!

Seriously you pay all that coin for red zone and still want to line up?

At 2pm?

Each to their own I guess but really, if you're gunna line up, get there at 2 with a GA at 20% of the cost and get a better spot than the RZ inside or outside the circle at the top.

All that for your own toilets sounds a bit... uhm... expensive.

Briscoe,
I loved my Red Zone experience. The night before I'd done GA, and waited 2 hours longer in line than for Red Zone. Never got a decent view of the band the whole night. RedZone meant I had rail, food within easy reach, nice people to hang out with and a view that couldn't be beat, IMHO.
This year I am trying again with GA but one of my goal spots is behind Red Zone!
I'm older than dirt the band and standing is very hard on me, but I dearly want to be as close as possible without living in line for days. Red Zone is amazing, really! A major factor was the fact that a substantial portion of my ticket price went to Africa.
If I could have afforded Red Zone again, I would have.

Nah, jolly good.

I can completely understand the red zone experience if people want to rock up at 6pm and get a good spot.

But I don't see the point of getting redzone and then lining up from 2pm anyway... Kinda defeats the purpose of redzone for mine.

Glad it all works out well for you. I'd not spend it personally, but then I'm 6-1 and can stand for lengthy periods without issue. So perhaps that's another factor.

You must understand I have never had RZ tickets before and I really do not know the protical, so from what I am hearing is that RZ has it's own seperate entrance and I could get there by 4:00 and still have a great spot by the inner and outer rail.Is that correct? The VIP tickets as was stated in a previous post also gives me access to to the outer and inner rails , right ? And I feel good knowing that proceeds of my hard earned cash is going to Africa. It's all good !

4pm would be fine, I agree with Briscoe, 2pm sounds a bit excessive. Just chill for an hour in line, get to know others around you, then you'll be heading in. You'll get a rail in the RZ no problems.

Rememer that normal GA goes in earlier than RZ, so you're very unlikey to get a rail in the inner circle, no matter what time you line up for RZ. Maybe 4-5 off front rail, or a couple off back rail.

The outer rail of GA is not accessable for RZ, & you wouldn't want to try for it anyway. It's a great spot, but it'll be a sea of people by the time you head in.

Personally I'd stick to the RZ. Enjoy having a rail by the catwalk, the extra room, the easy access to bathrooms & concession stands, & all this without having to wait in line all day.

The VIP pass will give you access to the field, though places by the rails are likely to be taken (again GA has 1st access).

Hi Maria, hope this diagram helps you visualise the whole 'entering the stadium, & where to go' thing.

By the time you enter the stadium the GA crowd will already be streaming into the stadium from the back of GA (green area). Some will be taking up places on the Outer Rail (Z), while others will be passing through the gates (X), heading round behind the CLAW (blue line) & into the inner circle (yellow area).

Note that RZ access will vary for each stadium, this diagram describes what happened at Phoenix. RZ'ers were lead into the stadium though a seperate enterance at one of the side gates. From there they made their way down to field level (red line), & into the Red Zone (red areas). I'd advise moving along the rail as far as you can towards the front of the stage, for a more front-on view (A). The other option, once at field level, is to follow the stream of GA'ers (blue line) into the inner circle, where you can try for a spot on the back rail (B), or try to get close to the front rail (C), maybe 4-5 deep already.

As you can see you won't want to try to get to the outer rail (Z) with your RZ access. I'll be crowded already, & there will be people streaming though the gates (X), making it impossible to get past anyway.

The floor sections were not coloured at the shows I went to. No wonder there was mass confusion.

German efficiency.

Thank you so so much d.darroch for that beautiful outline , I will definetly take your advice . Now I have a better idea as to where I will be and what spot I want . You have helped me big time . As you mentioned it also depends on the how it is set up .
So grateful, it's going to be amazing . Finally I will get my chance to  perhaps  make some eye contact with them , or even better maybe meet them? ( only in my dreams).

(Well, I *am* short!  Just watch out for the hat brim.  Invade my space at your own risk.)

Nashville Ken, how tall - or not - are you?

Back of the inner rail = you can lean your back on it but have to turn around when the band comes out on the catwalk.  Not a bad place if you are tall.

Front of the outer rail = no one will block your view, the band will be incredibly close when they come out on the catwalk, and a good place to be a short person.  But you don't get "I was in the inner circle" bragging rights.  ;)

Either way, wear shoes you can sprint in.  :)

Im about 5'8 and that is likely to go up

i made sure ill need new shoes by then  ;)

so for that conclusion ill most likely try for the back of the circle

That's where the girls and I were. It should be a really good spot for you. At 5'2 and 5'3" Katie and I weren't that thrilled but Julie who is closing in on 5'9" right now was thrilled.

Nashville Ken- definitely go for back rail. Me and my girl were there for Sydney 1 and we're only 5'7 and 5'3. We had a clear view straight through to the stage and whenever the boys used the catwalk we had each of them no more than 2m away from us. Epic spot
