Title: SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Post by: briscoetheque on August 02, 2010, 03:25:03 AM
So, we're entering that time again. Where everyone is so paranoid they must put SPOILER in every post, even when it just skims the edges of a SPOILER.

So, just wonder if this is worth considering.

Create a group called 'SPOILERS'

And a board called SPOILERS ABOUT THE TOUR

Let people decide if they want spoilers or not. If they do, let them add themselves to the SPOILERS group which has access to that forum board.

Then, if people want spoilers they can get them, and if they don't there's no risk other than some doofus starting a thread on the main board called 'OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY PLAYED RED HILL MINING TOWN!!!!'.

Pretty sure you can do self managed groups in SMF?

Just a thought.

i remember matt saying if people didn't want spoilers they should just stay off U2 news sites and U2 discussion boards :D.

I completely agree. But we will still have spoiler in almost any thread for the next 3 months :)

All that does is make more work for the users and mods while not solving the primary potential problem:

some doofus starting a thread on the main board called 'OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY PLAYED RED HILL MINING TOWN!!!!'

:) Not a fan of creating separate boards, threads, etc., and asking users to remember where they're supposed to post, asking mods to keep an eye on more than they're already doing, etc. Like having everything together in a single location. Easier on everyone.

but you'll never solve the primary problem

But in terms of workload, I wouldn't have thought it was a great deal if the groups can be user managed. ie add yourself to the group.

Of course if people need to be added by moderators then yep. Pain in the ar*e.

But more work for the users? You mean the users who have so little time on their hands that they have 20,000 posts in appreciation threads and pictures of LOLU2Z coming out of their eyeballs?  :D :D :D :D

No sweat. Guess we'll just get used to every single thread in the tour forum having SPOILER in the title again for 3 months.

And I think you mean 17 single locations

Cough...............cough!  :D Some people are able to post 20,000 times and have very busy lives. We are great multi-taskers!

As for the 17 threads, wherever it is possible , the mods will merge threads that are repetitive.

This is a good idea if every member on the board did exactly what they were supposed to regardless of whether members or mods administrated the effort. However, as M2 pointed out, that's not the way it will work in real life and it will create a mess when fans who specifically didn't want to see spoilers scream at those who posted them in the wrong place on the forum not to mention issues with administrating the Spoilers group regardless of who does it.

Again it's a very good idea, but it's not as practical as it appears to be on the surface.

Fair enough.

I don't think there's any solution then.

You can't protect the forums from idiots posting things where they shouldn't I guess.

I just figured this approach resolves more of the issues than the current approach. It doesn't introduce any new problems (ie users add themselves to the group, otherwise no change) and resolves some issues that already exist. So net result good.

But seems unworkable so jolly good. Move along.

Oh man last night U2 played SPOILER at the SPOILER part of the show. It followed SPOILER and Bono snippeted SPOILER in the song SPOILER. What a great show, the only part I didn't like was SPOILER and the part where The Edge SPOILER to the SPOILER. But otherwise it was awesome. :D

Why do you have go to and spoil everything by telling me there'd be SPOILERS??!!!

The whole "Spoiler" thing is really starting to get obnoxious.  What is the point of announcing "spoiler"? To warn people that you're going to talk about what U2 is up to? That's what this site is for!  I'm sorry, but if someone is so sensitive that they can't hear about what songs might be in the setlist without having the experience ruined for them, then this is probably the last website they should be looking at.  Do you think ESPN constantly announces "Spoiler Warnings" on SportsCenter in case the people watching recorded the game? No, of course not, because it is assumed that when you are watching a show whose purpose is to provide news on a subject, you're going to encounter some news on the subject!  And if you wanted baseball news without hearing any football news, well, that's on you.  Can we please agree that if you don't want to know what U2 did, you're coming to a U2 site at your own risk? Nobody is "spoiling" anything except these annoying warnings.

Who knew that a single word could have such an impact on someone's ability to read the news? Not me! Do you feel like you've missed out on something because we added the word "spoiler" in the headline? Or said it once at the start of a news story?

Same rule applies, DTH. If you don't like spoiler warnings, don't come to a U2 site when spoilers are being posted.

I actually agree with you. People wanting to avoid spoilers shouldn't be visiting U2 sites this week. But the fact is that there's more U2 stuff going on than the tour. There's album news, Spiderman news, Bono's health, Bono's humanitarian stuff ... people still like to keep up on that while avoiding the setlist so that they can see the 3rd or 4th concert of the tour without knowing what's going to happen. It would be beyond rude for @U2 to say "F You," don't come to our site. We exist to serve all of our readers, including the ones who are trying to avoid spoilers for a week or two or three. And when I did a survey of our readers last year (before the U2 academic conference), about 20% of the respondents said they try to avoid spoilers. They matter to us just as much as the people who want to know everything the minute it happens.

Actually, I come here to see information on setlists and new songs, but I demand everyone else shield me from any other news about the band because I don't want to see U2 news when I come to a U2 news website. In other words, it's time to start posting spoiler warnings in front of every post, every article, and ever link.

When trying to turn the argument around on those of us who are anti-spoiler warning, you miss the point. Of course I can read past the warnings, but it's the sheer ridiculousness of it that bugs me. Someone who doesn't want to see things like setlists is going out of their way to the ONE PLACE WHERE THEY WILL SEE THEM. The set isn't going to be on the news. It's not going to be in the papers. It's not going to be on the radio, on billboards, or emailed to you by evil spoiler faeries. You have to come to a site that exists to publish updates on what U2 is doing in order to protest hearing about what U2 is doing!! WTF?! If you don't want to know, then why are you here? Because you might miss an update where Bono says Edge is on fire?  It's like a vegetarian going to a steakhouse and complaining.

Putting SPOILER in a thread for Tours would be like putting SPOILER as the title for everything in News and Rumors :P

If you dont want to hear about the tour, dont go in that section :)
