Title: Favorite moments of this tour?
Post by: trashbag on December 14, 2010, 12:22:44 PM
A lot of great moments as always. Here are a few of mine:

Debut of Bad in Amsterdam
Your Blue Room in Chicago
First time they segued Amazing Grace into Where the Streets Have No Name in Chicago
North Star in Munich - Bono's reaction to the crowd singing along was just awesome
Any time they play Ultraviolet :P

We can all argue about what the best moments were in terms of song debuts or crowd reactions but we all know that the BEST moment this tour was when Bono walked out onto that stage during Return of the Stingray Guitar in Turin, Italy on August 6th, 2010.  Without a doubt.  Just a month and a half before that, the man's career and even ability to walk was in jeapordy.  6 weeks or so after spinal surgery, he walks triumphantly about the stage, screams TORIINOOOOOOOOOOOO, and then gives an amazing redition of Beautiful Day.  Wow

I forgot about that. Add to that from the same show when he swings on the steering wheel microphone like a baboon and looks absolutely nothing like someone who just had back surgery :P

*Tries not to be smug* :P

In all seriousness, leaving aside my obvious bias on that one, I'd cite a few in particular- two general and two personal.

1) The moment they played "One" in Amsterdam 2. Why? Because they played it sixth in the setlist and from right then, it was clear that ALL bets were off!  :D And that night went on to see Bad and UTEOTW receive tour debuts!

2) Helsinki 2 this year- "Oh, North Star's been played. Same old boring setl- hold on a minute, it's not North Star!?!? It's Every Breaking WHAT?!!"

3) Yes, the band's entry in Torino. Okay, okay, leaving bias out of it didn't last long. :p But having heard rumor that Beautiful Day was the opener, having stayed away from most spoilers, I was *STUNNED* when Space Oddity ended - early! - and this driving, INSANE guitar riff began. Now add to that the fact that we were all (in the circle) holding up our bits of paper to form a giant Irish flag... and then things erupted! People jumping up and down, paper everywhere, not even SEEING Bono until I realised he was bouncing up and down on the catwalk behind me, Edge just a few feet in front of me.... Amazing. My first experience of GA, and of an Italian crowd- and to be at THAT gig was... special.

4) Sunday Bloody Sunday in Paris. I can't even explain, it was just ELECTRIFYINGLY good for me. Bono got the entire crowd chanting "Get Up Stand Up" for the Roma just after the Roma had been essentially kicked out of France, and it felt like being part of a moment, of something special. It also felt very brave of him. I normally get very bored of this song- but it was PHENOMENAL in Paris to be there.
3)

Love Rescue Me.

From one Sydney to another:

1) LoveTown - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TodnbwT6FPs&feature=related

2) 360 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8c31Dm4Erc

They better leave this in for the US tour. Its one of my favorite songs. Even though I wasn't there, highlight of the tour so far for me, period.

However, this clearly shows that Bono just can not sing as well as he used to due to natural ageing of his voice.

Giants' Stadium II when Bono pulled a kid on stage during the intro to COBL and when it kicked in, they both ran around the catwalk. My wife and I both  :( - Great moment

Barcelona I - June 30, 2009. The band proceeds to muddle through 23 songs with lowlights including botched sample cues, Edge solos, Bono's voice ,etc...Worst I' ever heard him sound.

This is my favorite moment and I wasnt even there. I recorded the mp3 from youtube though because I just love how Bono reacts, even just hearing him. He kind of chuckles and says, "That would be the internet." And then says a heartfelt thank you. It took my breath away. I love watching that video too because his look of surprise is priceless. Not only was his new song recognized, but the crowd was singing it back at him with joy. That's got to be a great moment for an artist. And one positive thing about all the freebies we get on the internet. We'd still buy a studio version in a heartbeat!! It's so wonderful to be able to follow the shows over the internet, tho.

2 great additions. was edge trying to mimic dylan's voice for a laugh during the first 2 chorus harmonies during love rescue me? it looks like adam is laughing along at it. fair play if he was.

My favourite moments, from the shows I've seen

1. "Bad" - Cardiff, 2009. Penultimate performance of the song for an age and also the only time on that tour a "one night" show got the song. My brothers favourite song, and they played at his only show of the tour. Made my night.

2. "Crazy Tonight" - Barcelona, 30 June 2009. At the precise moment everyone wondered what was going to happen next, we got a completely revamped version of the song, the Claw going batshit and moving around, and the band running through the crowd. Alongside a huge amount of "WTF?" from the audience.

3. "Miss Sarajevo" - Paris 2010. Because its a song they should play more often.

4. "Streets" - Dublin 2009. "Where The Streets Have No Name", in Dublin? What's not to love?

5. "Ultraviolet" - Barcelona 30 June 2009. First performance of the song in 16 years, and Bono swinging from a microphone stand hanging from the roof in a suit of lights. Awesome.

Probably for me when one of the most serious security guards along the circle stage railing was tossing beach balls back into the crowd and for one of them he decided he would spike it back into the mass of people because he was getting a little tired of the act and as he spiked the ball it smashed into the girls' face who was standing right infront of him. No harm done but it was hillarious. And thats not to say the concert wasn't better than that moment...it was just really funny.

My favorite moment....the first time Bono shouted REJOICE on this tour. Finally, a dream of mine came true...they did something from my beloved October album and it wasn't what I expected. It was always a favorite song of mine though. To hear it live was just magical.

Giants Stadium I: The band starts "City of Blinding Lights" and Bono pulls a kid on stage and begins to run around the horn with him. I get all choked up at its awesomeness and look over at my wife and she's balling her eyes out! Amazing feeling!

Following the 1st leg on Twitter religiously! The anticipation of what was coming. The possible surprises. It was like Christmas as a kid.

The Firsts: Electrical Storm (remember that one?); Drowning Man (not); Mercy (finally); Your Blue Room; Scarlet (w/o JZ); etc.

The Country specific songs returning: Mothers of the Disappeared; One Tree Hill; Spanish Eyes

The new songs: EBW; North Star; Glastonbury; Boy Falls From the Sky; Return of the Stingray Guitar; etc.

The complaints: This one is a little tricky but I will remember it. The songs they finally dropped from the setlist (BTBS; Pride; etc.). People still complained. Also worked in reverse. They played unique songs and still the complaining rained down...Love it!

So far: This 3 Year tour has been extremely memorable. Looking forward to it's 2011 push!

yep, i agree and i was there that night in Torinoo and it was a dream come true, they came back better than ever and Bono looked incredible, from Stingray to MOS and beyond it was a perfect night and along with Roma one of the best nights of my life...

there are too many highlights to mention but...
Roma with u2place’s choreography and being in that moment for Still Haven’t Found and watching the boys' reaction-I get goosebumps just thinking about it,  Bono said it all that night when he said 'che serata magica-viva Italia'! special special night, Bad/All I Want Is You...:)
Mother’s on the 2nd night in Zurich with the rain coming down seemed very emotional-“in the rain we see their tears”, poetic...I wasn’t there but watch that moment on youtube all the time and wish I was...

Every Breaking Wave’s debut, WOWY every night of the tour, the US leg getting Your Blue Room...I could go on and on
...and hopefully there is even so much more to come from this tour that keeps on giving...
