Which U2 tours have you attended and what are your memories and thoughts about them?

Just 360. Toronto 1. Show blew my mind. TONS of NLOTH tracks and rarities I never expected to hear live.

Lovetown - 2 shows as an 11 year old. Mind blowing but I don't remember the specifics of them really. Just remember thinking WOW.

Zoo TV - 4 shows as a 15 year old, 2 in Melbourne, Sydney minus Adam and Adelaide. Parents lent me cash and I caught the train from Melbourne with my cousin. Remember lots about these shows, was so absorbed by the whole thing. Remember the first Melbourne show as being the daddy of them all. Right down the front, and amazing crowd atmosphere and what a performance.

Popmart - 3 shows as a 20 year old. Home to probably my favourite U2 show ever, Sydney. You've heard me wax lyrical about that show before so I won't again. Melbourne was a great show, at a terrible venue, as was Brisbane. Sydney though was the dogs bo****ks. Reserved seats back in the stands, I just ran down to the front of the B-stage and ducked security.

Vertigo - 7 shows as a 28 year old. Now I had the cash to do a few shows, and a thing called annual leave. My first overseas jaunt (albeit New Zealand) and in support of an album I loved. My first effort at 'lining up' for general admission (prior shows had all been reserved seats).

360 - 9 shows as a 31/32 year old. A trip to the US for Vegas and the Rosebowl, followed by 7 shows in Australia. Two really contrasting sets, Bono's voice on the Aussie leg was as good as I'd heard since Zoo TV, and a leave pass from my long suffering wife.

My favourite show of them all? Popmart Sydney

My favourite tour of them all? Zoo TV I'd say. But how to split them...

I've often wondered if my dislike for ATYCLB is born of not seeing elevation... or if I'm not that fussed about missing Elevation as a result of not liking the album?

Slane is one of my favourite shows on DVD ever, but then it wasn't strictly an Elevation gig I guess...

They're probably playing as many ATYCLB songs in 360 as they did at Slane... perhaps... Someone will look that up for me.

I've only attended one show, and it was on the 360 tour, London, 2009.
It was an incredible experience - the 'stagnant' setlist (which i had been following nightly anyway) and grandiose stage didn't bother me, i was just completely taken in by seeing the band i loved in person for the first time. In fact, i actually liked the stage, but that may have been because i was really high up, and it offered an extra dimension to the performance almost in light of the band being so far from me.

But the claw really did strike a chord with me from the moment i saw it. It was the first time i had been in a stadium too, so the entire visible landscape was alien to me. Wembley stadium is absolutely huge, it was like being in a city on another planet, with this huge spaceship at the centre.
The vision of the claw was the first cool thing. Next was the mexican waves - 90,000 people swelling up and down was extraordinary, probably a sight i'll remember all my life.

When u2 came on, the build up was a work of art.
The P.A. music stopped, space oddity came on, twice as loud.
Then 'Soon' came on, even louder.
Then Larry walked on, the entire audience screaming, thousands of camera lights flashing everywhere. When he started drumming, the noise hit me right in the chest, it was so powerful! As the rest of the band came on, the cheers grew louder, as did the music, and when Bono strutted on, Wembley went absolutely bananas. I couldn't believe i was seeing my heroes in the flesh, it was almost surreal!
They put on a fantastic show, Bono's voice was phenomenal, even by 360 standards (particularly during Breathe and NLOTH), and they played songs i was dying to hear, like NLOTH, Beautiful day, and most of all Until the End of the World and Ultraviolet, both of which had a special significance for my brother (who was there with me) and i.

Halfway through the show, my other brother (who is living in spain) texted me, saying "Beautiful ocean to my left. Spanish cities to my right. Amazing sunset right in front of me". I figured he was bragging, so i texted back "45,000 people to my left. 45,000 to my right. U2 right i front of me".  :D

The concert was brilliant, and well performed, i was overjoyed to finally see my favourite band live, and i left the stadium shaking with adrenaline. I loved it.  :)

That being said, perhaps because of my inexperience with U2 concerts i don't appreciate how much better the other tours were? I've heard a lot of talk of the 360 tour being a bit inferior, and i suppose, had i attended more tours, i might have found the show to have an unimpressive setlist, and an alienating stage?

Tumbling Dice, wich tours have you seen? What were they like in comparison to the 360 tour?  :)

Briscoetheque, that's an impressive number of shows! I'd be curious to hear what you though of Bono's voices on each tour you saw?

I've only been to Elevation (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)... And I've been a "fan" since 1985 (at age 10, yes) and a full-fledged fan since AB when I was a sophomore in high school (14-15?). :( I face-palm myself daily when I realize I was old enough to go to Zoo and didnt. Same goes for PopMart. Bleh.

Anyway, going to THREE shows this year!! But I didnt count them in the poll since I havent been to them yet....

ZOO TV - 3 shows.  The Philadelphia Outside Broadcast show still ranks as my favorite since I was able to catch the entire acoustic B-stage set (Angel, WLCTT, AIWIY, Satellite of Love) a few feet from Adam.
POP Mart - 4 shows  Visually the best thing I've ever seen.
Elevation - 4 shows  I caught one Post-9/11 show in Philly and it was an emotional one.
Vertigo - 1  Nice set and the return of 40.
360 - 1 I caught one Giants Stadium show and I can't wait for more.

2 Vertigo shows 1 360 show, with 2 more more in July.

The best was Vertigo at Madison Square Garden.  Best day of my entire life.  I had GA tics along with my husband, nephew and his friend.  Arrived at MSG about 1:00, we were about 36th in line.  That was when they scanned your tic to see if you got into the ellipse.  My hubby, nephew and friend got scanned first, no dice.  Then I got scanned and it came up ellipse!  I asked if all four of us could get in and they said yes.  We got front row right in front of The Edge.  Nothing in front of us but stage.  It was amazing!!  I will always have fond memories of that special day back on Oct. 11, 2005!

I admit I would have liked to see a Vertigo show in an arena but by the time U2 made their way to Europe they were playing in stadiums. ::)  Anyway, no great loss.

Zoo TV  / Zoomerang - Sydney 2 (GA), The 1 that was filmed. My first big rock concert, MIND BLOWING! Camped out to get good seats, but there was a stuff up (seats were sold too far to the rear), so we ended up with GA. So the GA addiction began.

Popmart - Sydney (seated, kinda), as Briscoetheque has previously said, One with the lights off, during a thunderstorm, was bloody brilliant! No GA's, as this was a seated show, but just like Andrew blagged past security & ended up standing against the catwalk. High fived the band (not Larry of course), as they came in beside the catwalk, because of a faulty lemon  ;D

Elevation - Slane 1 (GA), not the DVD, the 1st show. Managed to get 2 tickets in the presale from hell (guess this was the 1st internet sale, & it topped the Vertigo presale for me). Then got another 16 tickets during the general sale, on the phone calling the Irish ticket agencies from London! Guess I may be part of the reason they had to put another show on for the Irish fans ;) Roadtrip! Well plane trip actually. After all that, none of my mates wanted to brave the weather, so I ended up queueing by myself (this has become a regular occurance for U2 shows ever since). Queueing in the rain, only to get sunburnt by the afternoon. Coldplay, Chilli Peppers, 80,000 crazy fans, singing along to every song, Slane Bloody Castle! Prime position, in the heart, 2nd row from the front between Bono & Adam. A Sort of Homecoming (1 of my faves), the only time I've had the pleasure of hearing it live. Bad! 1 day after Bono buried his dad, Kite (by far & away my favourite song off ATYCLB) just blew me away, "I'm a maaannnnnnnnn, I'm not a child!", still sends shivers down my spine. One, with images of Bob Hewson on the screen, as the Buffulo ran, was just as emotional. This has to be the most passionate performance I've ever witnessed, & the crowd really felt a part of it. The fireworks at the end of the show, with the Unforgettable Fire playing in the background. Just around the corner to the B & B I'd booked months in advance, really considering to delay plans to fly back to London for another week (I know I'm greedy).

Vertigo - I only just missed the US shows (would have been my 1st arena shows), but made it back to Oz to see my home shows. Sydney 1 (GA), in the pit up close, a rain shower early to cool us off, nice! Sydney 2 (GA), against Adam's b-stage. Love & Peace or Else, with Bono marching & drumming was brilliant, as was Miss Sarajevo. Plus a brilliant closing version of Kite, backed by the didge.

360 - Phoenix (RZ) , 1st time I've not done (proper) GA, when it was available. RZ was great, & a bargain auction at a show with much lower demand than some of the 'big' shows. Very chilled, but not quite the atmoshere of GA. Vegas (GA/seated), had a VIP pass, so watched the 1st half of the show from the outer circle, then climbed the stairs to see the 2nd half of the show from the very back row on Adam's side. The only time I've seen the CLAW lit up at a distance, spectacular! The Rose Bowl (GA), lining up is always pretty fun, but this was a long hard day, stampede included. Got shafted by 100's of people, you Wa***rs, but still ended up back rail in the pit, & had a great time, with a great friend. Loved the crowd lighting, & the ISHFWILF sing-a-long, even if I'm not a big fan of the song. Vancouver (GA), camped out, in near freezing weather, threatening to rain, with only a trash bag, & a blanket I 'borrowed' from the youth hostel. So worth it! 1st person into the pit from Edges side, & parked myself right in front of Bono. Ultraviolet was soooooooo cool!

Missed the Aussie shows, first time since Zoo  >:( Got tickets to Oakland, Anaheim 1 & 2, & have to get rid of a SLC GA. Bring on June '11!

So if we should be jealous of anyone it should be Brisco & Bels.

Brisco, LOL @ "dogs bo****ks".

I've mentioned this before but my 1st U2 show last year was kinda a fluke. Won the tix off the radio just bc I was a casual fan & thought I'd give it a go and now I'm official. Almost didnt go bc I had to talk my friend into it bc I hate going alone.

Bought tix for the 3rd leg show in Miami :)

I've only seen U2 once and that was 360 in Atlanta where Bono was Adam's side THE WHOLE DAMN NIGHT! The best part of the whole experience was getting to spend it with my girls. Yeah, I'm a sap.

UF
JT
ZOO TV
Popmart - Columbus, night #2 in Chicago, Detroit
Elevation
Vertigo - night #2 in Detroit

Elevation had the best setlist, but Vertigo was the best performance. I remember hearing on a local radio station the morning of the show I attended that tour personnel were telling people they met that night 1 here beat Milan...and then that night Bono said that show 2 was better than show 1. They were so on it was ridiculous - and the crowd was insane. Top it all off with Bad as the last song of the night, and wow!

#@!

Boy - 1 in a club in Manhattan

Joshua Tree - East Rutherford - 1

360 - East Rutherford - 1 (will be 2 this July 2011  hopefully if I don 't break my ankle again and Bono doesn't hurt his back again !  :D We are both about the same old age ! Can you tell?! )

I wish I would have seen them in Madison Square Garden. That place is magic when U2 plays there.

My total is small but I've always been about quality, not quantity  ;) 8) :D At least that is what I tell myself !

I think they're a totally unsuitable venue to see and hear musical concerts.  I have seen a handful of concerts in open air venues but every time I had the sense that the artist's were taking the pi*s.

Seeing the CN Tower light up in sync with the music at Toronto 1 was pretty spectacular, and unachievable in arenas.

I like to feel a part of the show and not feel detached from it which is what I feel in a stadium.  I'm don't rate the so-called 'atmosphere' of the stadium crowd.

I've seen two U2 concerts; in an arena and in a field/natural amphitheatre/hill and I enjoyed the arena show more.

This attitude is exactly why I think U2 should do mixed tours, playing both arenas and stadiums (And I don't mean arenas in North America and stadiums for everyone else)  That way the many people people that wants to see U2 playing a 'spectacular' show in a stadium can do so and I'll be happy for them, as that will mean there are plenty of tickets for mugs like me that want to see U2 in an arena. :)

I've been at every U2 tour since WAR (1983). I'm giving away my age here, but I saw U2 for the first time in 1983 at the SFX Centre, dublin, Ireland, just a few days after Red Rocks, with Bono holding up the white flag. Of course, SBS gets a rousing cheer when played in Ireland (the Republic anyway!!)

I then saw them in Summar of 85 at Croke Park, Dublin, during the Unforgettable Fire tour.
Twice in 1987 at Croke Park on the Joshua Tree tour.
1989 Lovetown, I was there the night Bono said "We have to go away and dream it all up again" and I was as shocked as anyone else in the audience, but sadly I missed out on the new years night show. I listened to that on Radio.
1992 I saw them on Zoo TV at the RDS in Dublin.
1997 POPMart Miami
2000 Bank Atlantic center, Fort Lauderdale. Of course, it was opening night of the elevation Tour and Bono fell off the stage. Maybe that's when he hurt his back?
2005 American Airlines Arena, Miami, Vertigo Tour. SPINE-TINGLING!! When COBL rang out!!!!

2011 I will see U2 at Dolphin stadium Miami along with 60,000 other cheering fans.

For what it's worth, I agree with TD. I don't care for stadium concerts either. I also don't go for eating outdoors either  :D It always amazes me at all the people who choose the outdoor tables at places in Manhattan. You get to eat and suck up the car fumes at the same time , all while you try to chat with all the horns blowing  :D

But I am grateful and happy to see U2 in whatever venue they choose even if it is not my favorite.

Actually I find there isn't a great deal of difference if you're in the inner circle between stadium and arena. Certainly the size of the 360 main stage was not that big, the band members spent a lot of time quite close to each other - on of my friends said that it felt like a club gig.

But in stadiums it's the back row that make the atmosphere. If the whole crowd is buzzing, you can feel it.

Move away from the front and it's a very different situation.

That said I haven't seen U2 in an arena since I was 11, and can't say I took much notice of specifics, was too busy going 'wow'.

But U2 shows towards the front are pretty much venue independent I'd think...?

Not everyone has the knack of getting under the band's noses as you have, Briscoe, as your perfectly adequate photo's demonstrate ;)

How come you think they're unsuitable? Please excuse my ignorance, but i've only seen a stadium show, so i don't know what is superior about an arena?

I like to feel a part of the show and not feel detached from it which is what I feel in a stadium.  I'm don't rate the so-called 'atmosphere' of the stadium crowd.

I've seen two U2 concerts; in an arena and in a field/natural amphitheatre/hill and I enjoyed the arena show more.

I see... i guess it could be quite alienating when the band is so far away! I suppose 360 makes up for it with spectacle, but yeah i guess i'd like to see them up close and personal next time... i hope they come back to the UK soon  :-[

Yep yep, realise that mate.

But from the first 50m I reckon the show would be much the same.

ZooTV - Vancouver II (November 1992) 35th row on the floor
PopMart -  Edmonton I and II (June 1997) 6th and 8th row on the floor
Elevation -  Toronto I and II, Montreal I and II, Buffalo (May 2001) Front row in the heart all 5 times - 4 times on Adam's side and one on Edge's.

ZooTV made me fall in love with UTEOTW -  I wasn't a huge fan of this song and then it was so incredibly powerful and raw live that I cursed the fact I had underrated it for over a year! It was such a cool, dark, crazy and almost sinister atmosphere - very avant garde for a 19 year old  girl from Central Alberta....

PopMart was fun, but for all the spectacle I barely remember it.  Maybe it was because I was too annoyed I knew too many people at those concerts who weren't even U2 fans were at the concert. Grrrrrrr.

Elevation - what can I say, I saw the boys up close 5 times in two weeks. And I fulfilled my dream of being up against the barricade directly in front of Adam (4 times!  ;D). So obviously this was my favorite tour ever. I also loved the fact that this tour was so toned down - no characters or theatrics. Other memories: Almost slapped a man who was in the heart and asked me "What side does the Edge usually stand on?" and got into an argument with Denise Richards.

And for the record, I prefer arenas.

Joshua Tree- St. Louis, Game 7 of the world series Bono comes out in a Cardinal
Jacket. Place went wild. I was fan of U2 before 1987, but they didn't come to St. Louis for the War or
                    Unforgettable Fire tours

Zoo TV indoor- Miami, Second show of the tour,
It was like what the hell is going on. Great Time Great Show, I was hooked

Zoo TV outdoor- Anaheim, Last Show in the USA, I moved from Orlando to LA,
I look back and think how lucky I was to see both shows

PopMart   St. Louis, Good show but at the time little disappointed in the Dome Show

Elevation   St. Louis post 9/11 maybe most emotional show

Vertigo   Seattle, Great weekend to visit my sister and see the band.

Vertigo   St. Louis,  I look back on vertigo now and think its one of most under rated tours.
they played some great songs on that tour.

360      Chicago, Opening Night in North America.

I have tickets for Nashville and St. Louis. I love catching a early leg show and then they usually hit my home town at the end. Its interesting see how the show changes.

Cheers

Vertigo - Twickenham 1 2005

360 - Dublin 1 2009, Wembley 1 & 2 2009, Cardiff 2009, Rome 2010

Wish I had gone to Elevation.

Stadiums represent a poor gig experience. The sound is invariably bad, the beer is rubbish, there are too many people, they're hard to get home from and unless you either:

a) get there ridiculously early
b) pay a fortune for a decent seat

or

c) don't mind being horribly squashed and pi**ing yourself during the gig

the alternative is seeing the band from a great distance - pointless.

UF Tour - Wembley Arena
JT Tour - Wembley Stadium
ZOOTV - Wembley Stadium
POPMART - Wembley Stadium
Elevation - London Astoria
Elevation - Earls Court X 2
Elevation - Paris Bercy
Elevation - Madison Square Gdn
Vertigo - Twickenham
360 - Wembley Stadium

360 was in the top 5 worst gigs I've seen by any band - anywhere...

Actually, yeah, a little bit. I had just graduated from a Christian high school when AB came out, and I remember being worried (although I liked the album). Then I remember seeing a pic of Bono as MacPhisto and thinking they'd apostatized completely. It really wasn't until I saw the Sydney show live on Pay Per View that I actually "got" what they were doing. Then I moved to Europe soon after and the whole Zoo thing just clicked.

And I've been a citizen of Zooropa ever since....

How does one possibly attend so many shows in a single tour? Do you not have a job? I would think most people couldn't afford to chase a band around the country/continent for so many shows.

Ideally perhaps, but the realities of living usually restrain a person.

I have a passion for recording music, but at present cannot afford to do so as much as I would want, for example.

Yeah, i know. I had (he passed away about ten years ago) a cousin in Adelaide so i traveled to Australia to visit him. I didn't know about the U2 concert there, but he knew that they are my favorite band so he brought tickets and suprised me. It's like the best show i have ever attended.
