Title: Will U2 Return To The UK And Europe In 2011?
Post by: A_Fly_On_The_Wall on January 05, 2011, 08:39:05 AM
I really want U2 to tour in Europe, but especially the UK towards the end of 2011. If what we are hearing is said to be true, then U2 will have a new album out by May. This means that they will have to promote that album with, either a brand new tour straight after the 360 tour ends or in 2012, or continue with their spectacular 360 tour but dominate the set-list with new songs in 2011.

When U2 released No Line On The Horizon in February 2009, they started their "360 Tour" four months after, at the end of June. So if a new U2 album is released in May 2011, it should make sense to start a brand new tour in September. The only problem is that the 360 Tour is scheduled to finish at the end of July. So they would only have two months off before their brand new tour would start at the end of September. Would this happen? And if so, would they be returning to Europe and the UK by the end of 2011?

What are your thoughts?

I think U2 will play the UK but not Europe. The 360 Tour will end with a small leg around England, Wales, and Ireland.

I never said Ireland was in the UK. I merely said that the UK NOT Europe will see U2 this year. Then Ireland to finish.

Semantics.  U2 are half British anyway.

They probably will, but I voted no since I would love for Pittsburgh to be the last show on the tour. Although I saw an add for that show that says "last date of the US tour". Not the tour in general.

No.  I don't think the logistical costs of transporting the 360 circus back to Europe would be justified for a few more UK dates.

I will be suprised if the 2011 "Europe" leg is anything more than a handful of UK cities and Dublin.

Hmm. You say referring to Ireland as being part of the UK is just 'semantics' yet insist on referring to U2 as 'half-british'. Seems like you have a problem with Ireland.

Isnt the plan, that at the end of the tour, they are leaving the THREE stages in different parts of the world. Im sure Europe will be one of those places, so there is every chance they will be back in Europe and if theres any justice, it will be UK and Ireland

the possibility of these dates are being discussed on u2market.com's forum in Italy...

http://www.u2market.com/t4602-3-leg-europea-i-rumours-proseguono

i know they are rumours etc, but I just thought id share with you guys...Im not sure where these dates originally came from, the user who posted the dates says that they are circulating on other fansites...but i think its worth noting that looking at the dates they seem to fall on perfect/ideal days, eg. the Dublin date is pencilled for a Friday, meaning that there might be space for a Saturday and Sunday show maybe once the first date sells out. The tour ending in Dublin (Aviva as well) would match the other rumours that have circulated in the last months, a date in Belfast also! plus there are other gaps between dates for extra shows to be added (my imagination running wild!)...in any case I am very excited just thinking this might come true! Letís hope so...:)

There are very strong historical, cultural, and economic links between Great Britain and Ireland (North and South) and Adam Clayton is English and Dave Evans is Welsh, regardless of what they may consider themselves.  If I were a professional footballer, I would be eligible to play for Eire on account of my maternal great grandparents.

And if U2 are so very patriotic, then why is the bulk of Principal management based in London, England; why is their company, U2 Ltd, based in Holland; why do they seem to spend most of their time in America or France?

so Queen aren't a British band then as Freddie Mercury wasn't born there? so Def Leppard are an Irish band then because they base themselves in Dublin? do you still consider the Stereophonics to be a Welsh band?
regardless of where U2 base their business interests.... their family and homes are in Dublin.... I dare say this is where they spend most of their time, not in America or France.
I fail to see how that ridiculous FIFA rule is relevant?!  :)

Folks, can we get back on topic please !

Any one who wants to debate the sematics/politics of Ireland, Northern Ireland, can start up their own thread in the "Real World" , this is NOT the place for such a discussion.

In addition, I am moving this to the tours section

There is no confirmation of any U2 gigs in Europe in 2011. Allthough I blogged about Aviva a while back
http://www.atu2blog.com/if-u2-play-dublin-in-2011-where-will-they-play/3669/

The conclusion was the Aviva stadium for Dublin, but there is nothing concrete confirmed.
U2 Tours reported on a media a rumour about a Romanian gig here http://www.u2tours.com/
but it's still all very speculative at the moment, for Ireland, UK and the rest of Europe.

I suspect we will know by March, as thats an aproximate period the tickets would have to be going onsale.

When do you think U2 will play any dates in the UK this year?

We know that Glastonbury is June 24th, so they could come back after their US leg for a few dates, perhaps at Wembley, but would it really be worth it? Should U2 start a brand new tour in 2012 to promote their new album, or should it be towards the end of 2011?

What won't happen, but would make perfect sense, would be to stick out the album NOW. No more excuses or billshut. If they have the songs, and they are on the road as it is, stick out the record, NLOTH is dead in the water and has been for a year. The band still have 30 or so shows to go. They're playing the songs anyway. Stick the record out, don't think too much about it, do it. Just like Zooropa. Let surprise be the oxygen of publicity. They can then disappear in July when the tour ends for a while and let the record do the work.

Interesting analysis. I think it would be good if the album was released now, but they don't want to rush the songs out before Glasonbury. I think they should wait until May to release it, bang out some of the new songs in the US before heading out to Glasto' and then the record can take over when all is done and dusted  :P

Well, if the U2 camp can keep Adam's baby a secret then they can certainly keep us guessing on this. I don't think they are going to do it for some reason. If anything, I just thought they have a show or 2 in Ireland for the finale but I say more no than yes. Just a guess.

Well, at least I can now vote with reasonable accuracy... :P

In all seriousness, I am obviously disappointed that I won't see my favourite band again for a few years, but I saw them four times on this tour, and one of them, Torino, will always have a special place for me. I really can't complain, and I'm thankful I got to see them at all. But I do feel bad for my friends and others who didn't get to see them in 2009 and were hoping for a return this year.

It's a shame that U2 won't be coming back to the UK this year (apart from Glastobury) because I'm sure the fasn would have loved to have heard them play their new material along with their old and new classics. It is disappointing, but we still have the album to tide us over for a few months (if it EVER gets released)  :D
