Title: Do You Want U2 To Play A Complete Cover Song?
Post by: Tumbling Dice on February 03, 2011, 01:05:52 PM
If you do, what cover do you want to see them play?

Rain - The Beatles

No.  I'm going to a U2 concert to hear a set of U2 songs.  If I wanted to hear other people's songs, then I would go to their concerts.

I'm ok with snippets, not whole covers though.

I voted no, but personally I'd rather hear a full cover than a snippet... I think they're silly

Why are they silly?

I don't know, I just think it's a little weird (and momentum killing) to throw in 30 second parts of random songs. Some of them are ok, but if I had a choice I think I'd say no snippets

I thought Satellite of Love was a very effective cover in the middle part of the Zoo TV show.

The Cult

SHE SELLS SANCTUARY

Imagine Edge on his explorer playing THE guitar riff. It is the best song U2 never wrote.

Stand By Me in ISHFWILF or 40 in Bad are momentum killing?  :P

I was just going to say Satellite of Love.  I think it helped, though, that they recorded it and released it as a B-side.  Speaking of which, I really love their version of Fortunate Son and would love to hear them play it live.

And this is pretty awesome too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjj3w325kDY

ok, ok, 40 snippet at the end is perfectly acceptable, and I would in fact encourage it. I also kind of like the "man in the mirror" one at the beginning of the tour, but once again, I would chose not to have them

I'd like to. Edges karaoke on Popmart was a good start  :D

There are many songs I think would do really great, so I'd rather go for a complete cover album and present it live a few times, not a big tour though.

But well, why not a whole Stand by me ie.? I'd like that. But yeah, U2 concerts are for U2 fans. So, not more than one song a show.

Snippets are okay for me. Could live without them, but some are really nice. I should go to a U2 concert in pouring rain. Wanna hear Singing in the rain  :D

I voted no. But I did like Satelite of Love in the middle of ZooTV. Maybe it'd be okay if it was one. But I generally go to U2 to hear U2, which is what they do best. I LOVE snippets, though, I think they are awesome. To me, it's like footnoting your work or something... I cant explain it, but I think it turns their songs into an art form... Adding snippets to some of the songs have given them a harder punch. For example, I absolutely LOVE Leonard Cohen's anthem snippeted in UTEOTW.

There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

^Most profound words I've ever heard. And they really fit into the mood of UTEOTW.

I like snippets (especially those rare times U2 snippets their own songs) but entire covers annoy me. I'm there as a U2 fan wanting to hear U2 music. They have 12 albums full of songs I would love to hear and only 24 or so songs to play at each concert. To sacrifice the possibility of hearing a U2 rarity for a cover song just would irritate me.

^THIS. I love snippets. It's a form of art that shows Bono is aware of the relevancy of other artists besides himself. It's like we're all a part of the great group consciousness of a music experience. I LOVE IT.

I'd love for them to play Tower of Song - I really loved the band arrangement of the version they did with LC in "I'm Your Man" and would love to hear a version with Bono singing the whole song (even though it'd never live up to the great man's vocals!).

Tower of Song is one exception I'd make to a complete cover song being played.

I think U2 sometimes does a poor job covering some songs sometimes (like when they did Instant Karma). Much prefer people covering U2's music.

Did a really good job though performing Dancing Queen with ABBA. I'm really just thinking of random live performances right now though.

Bryan Adams - "Here I Am"

If we count Passengers as a cover song, I'll take "Slug" over anything else.

And Stand By Me sounds like a great idea  ;D

I was just thinking that I wouldnt mind an Edge Karaoke slot like they did on PopMart. It would be neat to see/hear Edge singing again.

I'd love them to play 'Under The Milky Way' by the church. Reckon it would fit beautifully in place of In a Little While  >:(

Oooh! Good idea, Briscoe. Boy, that would really pi*s off the cantankerous Steve Kilbey, though. Have you ever read the man's blog? He hates Bono. (I think it's jealousy.)

Kilbey hates everyone. He's a miserable old b****** :-)

He's got an incredibly high opinion of himself, however... :D

Prefer to hear Acrobat as opposed to a cover!  ;D
