Title: which tour was best captured on film/video?
Post by: hurricane hugo on February 26, 2011, 10:03:47 AM
While my fave U2 tour is still Popmart, I don't really feel the essence of either it or Zoo TV was ever captured on film or video. That kind of insanity has to be experienced in person.

Elevation gets it.

Hm... 360 and Vertigo DVDs, what I've seen of them, did nothing for me.
And I guess if you don't have prior knowledge on the topic you won't understand the Zoo TV or PopMart DVDs AT ALL. I still don't get PopMart...
So yeah, Elevation it is.

Live at Red Rocks is as close as we get to witnessing a defining singular moment in Rock 'n Roll history, so that one is definitely up there.  My favorite will always be Zoo TV live from Sydney, but I also love PopMart live from Mexico City (the lighters going off in the crowd during New Year's Day and With or Without You are SO FREAKING COOL!) and U2 Go Home Live from Slane Castle.

I think the Mexico City and Sydney performances of their respective tours were superb.

Although I think any Zoo TV show without Desire, Ultraviolet, Tryin' To Throw Your Arms, and Bad doesn't really capture the essence of Zoo TV.

Under a Blood Red Sky, Live From Boston , and U2 Go Home best sum up the tours since there's not much with effects going on at the beginning.

That's true, but the addition of Dirty Day, Daddy's gonna pay and Numb really bridged the gap and Daddy's Gonna Pay gave MacPhisto great context...

The problem i have with Zoo TV on video is that on screen (particularly with it's 4:3 ratio), it just didn't convey the size of the whole thing. All shots of the huge stage had to be wide, and as a result were miles away. Popmart Mexico was a bit similar.

I thought U2:3D on the big screen really gave a great sense of the live show of Vertigo's stadium leg though.

I'll go with Slane I suppose.

Under A Blood Red Sky capturing the War Tour is brilliant. Zoo TV from Sydney is brilliant. I like Vertigo Tour from Chicago as well. I also think the 360 Tour from the Rose Bowl was captured really well as wel. I WAS THERE!! :D

Elevation Boston was beautiful, amazing how they captured the essence of the show.

Popmart Mexico, Zoo TV Sydney, and Slane close behind.

It would be pretty easy for U2 to include a bonus DVD of a never-before-seen ZOOTV show with the remastered Achtung Baby deluxe edition, but they won't.

And that show must be indoor. Before Zooropa was released.

Well, that assumes that they have good quality concert footage which would be suitable for DVD.

Elevation tour easily wins this one IMO. Although Zoo TV is my personal favorite. Seeing them for the first time at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on the indoor leg , and CNE Stadium on the outdoor leg.

Me too Sing.  I love Red Rock.....the youth and raw energy just makes me wish I had been there.  Just Perfect!

Slane to me is just like a grown up version of Red Rocks........can't explain why I feel that way........just do ;D

... of course they have loads of ZooTV Footage you haven't seen - the ZooTV Special, Rotterdam, etc. were all filmed in full.

My favourite is U23D : it reflects the band more accurately than anything else I've seen.

Slane or Red Rocks.

The 360 dvd is terrible and far too over-edited.

360 was dreadful

U23D was a gimmick and not a very good one. The technology just isn't advanced enough yet

Vertigo was dreadful.

Elevation and Slane were pretty good approximations of the gigs

POPMART was a spectacle although I'm not convinced it summed up the atmosphere that well

ZOO TV was pretty amazing but again, didn't sum up the gigs

Red Rocks was legendary

I reckon either Elevation, Slane or Red Rocks
