Title: South American Rehearsals- POTENTIAL SPOILERS
Post by: The Unknown Caller on March 23, 2011, 04:45:21 PM
U2chile and some associates are reporting the first soundchecks from South America

I want to heavily stress that this is the crew soundchecking, NOT the band, and the crew have been known in the past to soundcheck a VAST number of songs never played or even rehearsed by the band, so I'd very much refrain from getting your hopes up- although there's only one real surprise so far anyway. Nevertheless, I decided to start a thread since we will presumably have some band rehearsals soon!

Anyway, they list Pride, Elevation, New Year's Day, Desire, City of Blinding Lights, Where The Streets Have No Name, Miracle Drug
There also seems to be some confusion about Fez or Zooropa which is almost certainly just the mixed COBL intro from Cape Town.

Hopefully we'll have a real rehearsal with the band soon- and potentially some news!

23rd March - All instrumental, possibly/probably tech rehearsals
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Elevation
New Year's Day
Desire
City of Blinding Lights
Where The Streets Have No Name
Miracle Drug
Moment of Surrender
Mysterious Ways
Even Better Than The Real Thing (Intro- sounded 'quite rusty')
Unknown song (Possibly new?) - Acoustic
Beautiful Day
Where The Streets Have No Name
Zooropa (Intro)
City of Blinding Lights
Fez (cut)
Walk On
I'll Go Crazy If I Don'/t Go Crazy Tonight

24th March - Full Band- Initially without Bono

City of Blinding Lights
Moment of Surrender
Mysterious Ways
One Tree Hill / POSSIBLE Red Hill Mining Town (snippet)
One Tree Hill (again)
Magnificent
Mothers of the Disappeared (Guitar)

Return Of The Stingray Guitar
Beautiful Day (Twice)
Get On Your Boots
Magnificent
Mysterious Ways
Elevation (Bono arrives)
Until The End Of The World
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
One Tree Hill
???
Miss Sarajevo
Fez intro (Twice) / City of Blinding Lights
Vertigo Siren
Mothers of the Disappeared Guitar / Scarlet Bass (?)
Walk On
Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me
Moment of Surrender

Miracle Drug instead of IALW. Stop singing about space and play something different.

Although why aren't they rehearsing Breathe, NLOTH, White As Snow.

NLOTH > htdaab

Oh God please don't let them play Miracle Drug. Being subjected to UTEOTW is bad enough.

...Yet another EBTTRT rehearsal? I swear, this song BETTER appear! It was rehearsed in Barcelona, then it looked like they were going to play it in Glastonbury last year, THEN there were the rehearsals in Europe last year... they better play it this time!

The new song thing is also interesting, although that seems quite shaky!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe Miracle Drug could be the song in relation to Japan?

Before anyone gets excited about the new song, the person who reported that is strongly cautioning that it may well have been an old song in an acoustic form he was unfamiliar with - it was definitely acoustic and definitely NOT EBW or North Star.

The so-called 'new song' was probably something from Pop.

You can't really blame any of the younger fans for being unfamiliar with it.

Are you sure Miracle Drug isn't just Mercy? They sound awfully similar musically and there were no vocals.

They're not THAT similar. One can easily tell the difference between the two

I'm still very suspect about Miracle Drug. One tweet is the only reference to it being rehearsed that I've seen. Nobody on U2start is talking about it.

LOL!

Back for the South Africa concerts Willie was blogging about rehersals:

Quote
Feb 16 2011'Unplayed Classics'
Cape Town. Rehearsal day.

The backline crew came into the gig early today to set up a rehearsal space in a room in the stadium, so we could make some noise without it being twittered to the entire planet. I came in to offer moral support and give guidance on what it is we might be doing with the band tomorrow. The production load-in doesn't start until tomorrow morning, but the naked skeleton of the Claw is here, sitting in the stadium. It's not a sight I get to see very often and even two years later, it's impressive to see. The structure just looks colossal when it's sitting there in an empty stadium. Mind you, it looks equally colossal in a stadium full of people, so I suppose this shouldn't come as too big a surprise.

There's a song the band want to rehearse which is an album track that they've never played live. The backline crew played it through this afternoon, in order to get the sounds set up and it seemed very promising, so I hope it goes well with the band tomorrow. I'd like to get some more unplayed classics into the music arsenal."

Also this tidbit of info around the Zooropa/Fez they are hearing is probably a run through of the "Questions" clip Willie Williams worked up for Cape Town:

Quote
Feb 17 2011'Eureka Moment'4
Cape Town. Rehearsal day.

"In the rehearsal room Dec & I had some rare quiet time to work. Regular readers are probably sick to death of hearing about our apparently never-ending work on the 'Questions' segue, but after about a year of noodling with it, I finally had a bit of a 'Eureka' moment and realised exactly what we needed to do. I talked with the band this week about that particular moment in the show and what we might do to complete it. They threw some ideas around including reviving a short section of Your Blue Room. I thought this had potential, as I felt that the reason Your Blue Room didn't survive in the 2009 show was not that it wasn't good but that it was simply too long to hold attention in a stadium. A minute-long snippet might therefore be worth a look. However, in a fevered dream a couple of nights ago I realised that the answer isn't Your Blue Room, but that it's Fez, from No Line on the Horizon. Ironically, when I first envisaged the opening of the giant 360 video screen, the soundtrack I had in my head was Fez. I dropped this idea when it became evident that Being Born wasn't going to make the show. I thought then (two years ago) that you couldn't have one without the other but this week woke up and thought 'well, of course we can.'

The result is a glorious mash of Fez, the audience-sourced questions, plus samples from Zooropa, odd bits of Achtung Baby and god knows what else thrown in on top.
Bono and Edge sat with us to help make it all work and we finally (please god) finished it off. I hope I still like it tomorrow, as tonight I'm really delighted with it. I put the finished sound file on a memory stick to distribute to those who'd need to hear it. These little memory sticks form a daily part of the culture of information transfer in the video and audio departments on tour. When you plug one into your computer, a little icon pops up on screen showing its title (usually the owner's name). These memory sticks get passed from hand to hand and may go walkabout for days at a time before being returned to their owner. When I got this particular stick back, I was amused to note that some wag had renamed it "Animal Porn". Just as well I spotted that before heading through customs.

Well, obviously we can't be sure of anything!   :D But I'd think that the main thing there would be if they heard the very distinctive Miracle Drug guitar part ('Beneath the noise...') or the incredibly distinctive backing to Mercy.

And it is being discussed a lot on interference, which is where the report surfaced. Similarly, the u2start report wasn't really being discussed on interference, because it was reported on u2start. To be honest, I'm very sceptical about *all* of them, Miracle Drug, EBTTRT, new song... everything. It's probably just techs and doesn't mean much- I myself heard them try out 'Desire' in Europe last year and never play it. And I still don't believe even slightly that they rehearsed Zooropa or any of those songs before the South African gigs, and am VERY sceptical about them rehearsing Kite.

I'm looking forward to it too, but not really expecting any major changes beyond a dedication of an already-there song to Japan and possibly some of the usual rotations. My guess is the Cape Town set but with Stingray back, UV and NYD in place of HMTM and IWF, and Pride swapped out for something (Probably Desire, Angel, Bad or Stuck).  And, of course, quite possibly Mothers in place of Scarlet somewhere on this leg! I don't expect many surprises on this leg, but if they're there, I think they'll be on the 'third night's.

Prove me wrong, U2!

Me neither, I think what they heard was the mix station rehearsing the new Questions bit.  It's always hit and miss on the rehearsal "coverage".  Fun to laugh about.

Nice. Would figure too. Looking for some shake ups in the set list -- thought of other songs like EBTTRT and Miracle Drug would be great.

But why did they separate Zooropa and Fez? The Questions segment has them both together, not separated by CoBL.

:O One Tree Hill outside Australasia would be amazing (And long overdue). Could we see a show with five Joshua Tree songs again- OTH and Mothers as well as the big three? :o

Also, RHMT snippet is intriguing if only because of Willie's 'unplayed classic' claim....

I think the entire 'Does this song suit the stage/tour' argument is fairly silly as this tour's theme is about as consistent as coherent as ZooTV (IE: Totally incoherent and almost none of the songs fit but who cares, really? ) except people complain about it more. I don't think Zooropa or RHMT fit more than the other, to be honest!  :D

Also, note that on twitter there's an EXTREME note of caution about the RHMT snippet.

We've had less sources than usual, less reliable information coming in, the band seem to have flown out there quite late and, yes, there's always the possibility of indoor rehearsals. Willie has commented a lot in his Diaries about the fans knowing surprises as *soon* as they're rehearsed, and we know that the band rehearsed some stuff indoors in South Africa specifically so that we wouldn't know.

Looks like they're doing a setlist run-through then- odd to be without Bono! VERY glad (Though not at all surprised) to see Stingray back as the opener- means it will probably stay to the end. Although I do wish they'd switch BD with IWF and cut down the gap after Stingray- Beautiful Day works better a bit later in the set, and it's just too slow following on from Stingray, IMO!

Mysterious Ways followed Magnificent

We have live (Decent quality!) feed from the rehearsals- climax of UTEOTW right now. (No Bono)

I don't blame you; I've noticed there seems a split between people who have seen it live and those who haven't. DEFINITELY a song that's meant to be heard live- I probably wouldn't like it if I hadn't heard it live first.

Is anyone going to post a list of album songs they've never played live? Correct my list if I left out anything please.

-Shadows and Tall Trees: I'd actually like to hear it.
-I don't want the never before played October tunes to be suddenly focused on, thank you. They could dig out Rejoice for a bit of fun though.
-Red Light? Or did they play it once or twice?
-Drowning Man (I'd like to hear that one finally, as it was rehearsed along with Angels)
-The Promenade: would be a lovely rotating track to replace IALW
-Red Hill Mining Town: I dispise this one, so Bono needs to wear a mane wig to sing it.
-HEARTLAND: would be AWETASTICULAR, the dogs boloks.
-Acrobat: fine
-So Cruel: would be mediocre, but he could snippet it during MOS
-Some Days are Better... COOL, but anyone can recognize that one by the bassline.
-They've played it once, yes, but The Wanderer would be a great addition anytime, that would allow Bono to rest his voice mid-gig.
-The Playboy Mansion: (it might work with updated lyrics, possibly would still be dated within minutes)
-Grace: if they decided to play it in a cool Motown-ish way, with a nice pulsating bassline and a more upbeat tempo, it would be ace.
-Peace on Earth: the Walk On snippet was nice, but not a full performance. Lyrics need strong update. Wars, revolutions, protests are always happening Bono has a wide choice...
-A Man and a Woman: Please don't waste concert time on this guys. Play a proper Yahweh instead.
-One Step Closer: no reason to play it live
-Stand Up Comedy: should've been a single, should've been an encore opener, it's now a bit old to dig out.
-Being Born: If they managed to write it properly, with some sort of a proper beginning and ending and lyrics replacing some of the o-ooooh-s I'd like to hear it. If it's like the album version, it would be as memorable a live tune as Electrical Storm was.
-White: As Snow a bold move and I'd like to hear it live, but could be rather unnecessary and out of place.
-Cedars: no reason to play this one live I think.
-Anything new? Full band only please.

Peace on Earth was played in an abbreviated version a few times at the end of the Elevation Tour

And a slightly altered Miss Sarajevo ending with Fez

There's a gap we don't know in between One Tree Hill and the end of Miss Sarajevo. Interestingly, there are normally two songs there but the gap didn't seem long enough for two songs plus Miss Sarajevo. Is it possible that they have FINALLY cut IALW? Of course, it's also very possible that they simply skipped a song or two...

Probably SBS  though- Pride seems to be settled into the two 'rotational' slots now and was only rotated in for SBS twice, IIRC.

Maybe they'll go back to an indoor practice then?

Pretty sure Bono said that they were done, but not 100% certain. It would make sense- they seem to have skipped a few numbers throughout.

i think they might do another rehearsal with Bono but they have cut BD now.

^From twitter. Interesting... it is still about 10 PM there, I guess, they have a possible hour...

Too much excitement over nothing.  The setlist will comprise of songs that have been all played at one point or another in previous shows of this tour.  Don't expect anything new. They simply have no time to prepare or rehearse for that.  One Tree Hill is not the live rarity it once was, so it's nothing to be overly excited about.

Cheers,

J

Umm... what? One Tree Hill hasn't been played outside New Zealand since 1989. O.o And even there, it's only made six appearances six then. How can that possibly be said to make it not a live rarity? Unless you're trying very, very hard to downplay the significance of this?

I wonder why Chile though?

Beacuse One tree hill mentions Victor Jara, a Chilean singer and poet, who was arrested, tortured and finally murderer by the military dictatorship (leaded by augusto pinochet) in 1973, and was killed at the Estadio nacional, where the concert will take place.

Where poets speak their hearts,
then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon,
in the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
from the ground

One Tree Hill is the only setlist surprise? Yawn.

Wake me up when they add a good song.  ;)

And in the world a heart of darkness
A fire zone

Where poets speak their hearts,
then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon,
in the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
from the ground

Looks like another 'playing it safe' for the S. American fans...Sure am scratching my head why they would drop Breathe, Unknown Caller, The Unforgettable Fire and keep the boring and worn out Mysterious Ways, Pride on certain nights, ISHFWILF, Miss Sarajevo and In A Little While...YAWN ??? ??? :-\

Chile doesn't get U2 often.  The fans did not have an opportunity to hear these classics live.

Why torture them to listen obscure U2 songs?

Cheers,

J

Well, they're torturing them with Mothers of the Disappeared, Miss Sarajevo, IALW, HMTM and One Tree Hill, which aren't exactly your routine normally torued songs... :P
