Title: Songs That U2 Could Cover
Post by: Zooropa Baby Pop on April 25, 2011, 11:18:06 AM
I was thinking of songs that U2 would be able to cover and songs that they could cover well. This is not a thread about them playing cover versions on tour, just if they were to do a cover(s), what could they pull off.

I've thought of a couple that I think they could do brilliantly.

The Cult, 'She Sells Sanctuary'. I just think that this song has the best guitar riff Edge never wrote. Imagine him on the explorer laying this song. AMAZING.

Killers, 'All These Things That I've Done'. In the 'Zane Meets U2' interview they were talking of their admiration for The Killers and stated this song in particular. Zane Lowe said it was 'the best U2 song that U2 never wrote'. The song is almost the perfect U2 song and I think Bono especially would be out of this world.

I'm just interested in what other songs U2 fans think U2 would be good covering.

Wow... They've done so many... Hmmmm.....

Maybe it's just a Bonogirl fantasy, but I would love it if Bono sang a cover of Nine Inch Nails' Closer. LOL!!! :) :) :)

Oh God. That would be kind of... interesting... *picturing Bono singing the "ahhh ahhh ahhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhh"'s * :)

"Purple Rain," if only to hear The Edge do the guitar part at the end -- I think Prince's guitar at the end would be great for The Edge.

Come See About Me - The Supremes. Greg Dulli covered it and it was dark (I love it). I want to see what Bono would do with it!

Under The Milky Way - The Church (God, that would pi*s OFF Steve Kilbey. Which would also be fun.)

Alas, I don't think The Edge has the skill to do it justice.

None. I go to U2 concerts to hear them play songs of theirs I love, not someone else's stuff.

I'm sure it would be awful, but it would be great to hear once given its significance!

The End, by The Doors

Good choice. There are several Doors songs I'd like to hear them cover. Another good one would be Five To One.

Also:

Sun Is Shining--Bob Marley

Grace, Too--The Tragically Hip

If they ever make a covers album, which I hope they wait with very long, they should include a lesser known 70s era Tom Waits song that has not yet been covered.

In general, in a covers album they should only include songs that have not yet been covered and are lesser known tunes. It's still hard for me to think of "Everlasting Love" as a U2 song because it just is not.

However, wouldn't it be fun if U2 rickrolled the audience at a concert by playing a cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up"?

Race for the Surprise by Flaming Lips

You mean Race for the Prize, and yes that would be amazing. IF they could do it justice. Which I'm not so sure of.

I love Under The Milky Way too. I can't really picture how they would do it though.

- Never Tear Us Apart.   pretty screamy but a good beat

- One Step Ahead  split enz

- some guster songs

- paul simon?

I always thought that U2's cover of Tower of Song that they did with Leonard Cohen on vocals for the film "I'm Your Man" was superb - Larry and Adam really lock into the groove. I'd love to hear a version with Bono doing the whole vocal (not that it could ever supplant the extraordinary vocal cut the master did on that track).

I still think Bono could pull off Under The Milky Way. :) I think it would fit into the space theme of the 360 tour. He should snippet it somewhere. :)

Instead of just snippets, I'd love to get them into a studio to do a full version of Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division.

Must admit so would I - such a great song!

It wouldn't work I guess. That song is what it is nothing more (it's a great song, but not a U2 one), and would suffer from a U2 treatment. They would have to change the key anyway, it's too low for Bono to sound good on.

I agree.  Some of Prince's guitar solos are absolutely mind blowing (end of Lets Go Crazy for example).  Edge couldnt keep up with a Prince solo Im afraid.

When Under the Milwy Way was released it thought it was by U2 for a few seconds. I would have loved U2 to do a cover of that song by I don't know if The Church would grant them permission.

Does he have to get permission to snippet, though?

I think they could do a lot of Cure songs, and do them well.

I like the idea of Cult - She Sells Sanctuary and James - Sometimes.

Maybe a Rory Gallagher cover since Edge was a fan? Don't know if it would work but I love Cradle Rock and Walk On Hot Coals

Some other sugestions:

Acoustic version of Queen - You're My Best Friend (I think Bono could do a great version of this)
Joy Division - Disorder

To be honest I love the way they play snippets of covers as an intro/outro to their own songs, and I'd rather they stuck to that

If Under the Milky Way was going to get an airing it would have happened last year in Oz I reckon.

Regarding releasing it... I'd be surprised if Kilbey would allow them. He's a bit of a diva by all reports...

Yeah and he has blasted Bono as a sell-out several times on his blog. (jealous much, Kilbey?)

I love The Church. But Kilbey's a bit of a pill.
