Title: The Denver Crowd
Post by: The Wanderer on May 17, 2011, 08:35:43 AM
What kind of crowd response can we expect in Denver?  Having never been to a U2 show in Denver, and knowing there is a history between the band and the city, how "into" the show is the Denver crowd compared to other cities (US and non-US)?

If I remember correctly from 2005, it was VERY responsive & wild...especially during the opening of "Bad" ~ people FREAKED out...I even shed a tear!  And as a side note, Denver is The Fray's home crowd, so there will be energy from that.

Sweet.  :) People looked pretty wild at the red rocks show in 83. I can't wait! I'm hoping they have a few surprises.  :)

I wonder what the ratio of people who are going to SAY they were at Red Rocks is going to be to people who were ACTUALLY at Red Rocks...

I've seen the DVD so many times, I have myself convinced that I was there!  :)  In fact, I was the girl Bono danced with, yeah, that's it.

Does anyone know what time the world is supposed to end on Saturday?  I think that would be an awesome way to close out the final encore.

"Oh, oh, AAAAAAA OOOOOH ooooooH oooooooh.......Good night Denver.  Don't forget us......" ka-blooey!!

With my luck it will happen as soon as they let the GA line into the stadium.

I think I heard somewhere 5pm. It has not been confirmed if this is 5pm EST or MST (which is the time zone the dude who is prophetsizing the end of the world is in).

I'm hoping B makes reference to it before, during, or after UTEOTW. :)

Anyway, if the world does end at 5pm, regardless of time zone, I'll still be in the GA line and that would suck. :)

Let me just say that I dont know about the rest of the Denver crowd, but I'm freaking excited today and I'm still in Ohio, not flying out until tomorrow evening, and I cant even think straight. So there will be at least one screaming fan going crazy Saturday night!!!

That would be totally awesome!!

Also, let me put everyone's mind at ease.  May 21 is simply when the Rapture starts with world-wide earthquakes that will hit each time zone at 6 PM local time starting at the International Date Line and moving west.  So Denver will have plenty of warning of impending doom. And as long as the stadium stays in tact, I don't see any reason why the show won't go on.  The actual End of the World is not until five months later on October 21.   ;)

OK, EdgeFest, I swear I won't B.S. you or anybody else here. I was about 3 months shy of my 15th birthday. I grew up in Colorado Springs, about 75 miles or so from Red Rocks. Mom said no way to me going. HOWEVER, the rest of this is as true as it gets, and the Red Rocks video will bear me out:

My older brother Mike and his best friend Gary won tickets to go to the Red Rocks show on a beer bus (drinking age was still 18). So they indeed went to the show. After getting into the fogged-in, misty venue, while on their way to get seated (this was a GA show), my brother hits the bathroom. During that time, his buddy Gary gets approached by one of the camera crews working on the show, and he gets a full-on interview. Granted, he's a little tipsy -- not stupid drunk, just a little buzz going. And he goes on about how the weather really reflects the band, blah blah blah. It was a riot. Proof: He's got red hair and he's wearing a Vail baseball cap. Watch the first few minutes of the video, and wa-lah, there he is. Pretty cool.

My brother was steamed that he missed out. He should have had one less beer on the way up. I haven't missed a U2 tour since reaching driving age, but I always regret not being able to see that show. I'll be there Saturday night, though -- actually, all day Saturday in the GA queue!!   ;D

I've heard 5pm, 6pm and also sunset which is around 7.45pm.

I just RSVP'd to a post-rapture looting party via FB. Why not?

I'm just glad to be with 70K+ U2 fans on Saturday!

I agree for the most part MG (had two real pain-in-the-ass women behind us during the show; honestly couldn't believe their audacity, but it happens, I suppose). We were outer rail, left of center (Edge side). Awesome show. Un-freaking-real. Just great, great stuff. M@, it was great to see you again. Hope you enjoyed the Mile High City.

It looked full by the time U2 came on... maybe some empty seats here or there. But I couldnt see behind me to how far GA was filled beyond the inner circle.

Here's a link to the Denver Post review.  It says 70,000 plus were in the audience.

There are also photos and links to articles about U2 mania in Denver before the show, Colorado's role in U2's history, and the obligatory "why U2 sucks" article.

Mile High holds 76,000-plus for a football game, IIRC. When I looked up early in U2's set, from my post on the left outer rail (No. 112 in GA line; not too bad!!), it looked pretty damn full in the upper decks, and it was definitely full below, and plenty on the field, as well. It was a huge crowd. What a freaking great show. And we lucked out. Weather started to suck during The Fray's set, and it was getting cold between sets. But shortly after U2 started up, the winds died down and it actually warmed up. It ended up being pretty comfortable. Damn fine night, overall.

Now then, ON TO ST. LOUIS!!!

Hey p8rut, really sorry we didn't at least connect in line at some point Saturday. It was just such a crazy day -- got our numbers Friday afternoon, checked in a couple times Friday night. Only got about four hours sleep before heading back Saturday morning, and my mind was just blank about trying to meet up with you and others whom I've chatted with on this message board. Maybe next time. Hope it was a great day. Be well.

allow me to voice anger over a young girl behind me in front of the outer rail. this is HORRIBLE.

so durin the intermission between fray and u2 the stats were scrolling by on the screen, well when it said "abortions this year = 42,000" she said "OH HELL YEA! 42,000 less people in the world! alright!" said it loud and proud. im not exagerating, she said that. i bit my tounge and when it scrolled the # of suicides <a freind of mine from years ago killed himself in march> i braced myself and waited for her whoop-whoops! of excitement. she bit her tounge and made some dumb inoffensive comment, i was very ready to rip her head clean off and tell her to go somewhere else to stand. just wanted to call that girl out on her idiocy. all she did to "retract" her ignorance was to say "oops! i better not say that someone could be offended!" or something.

The stadium stayed quite empty until U2 was about to come on stage then everyone was frantic to get to their seats, very funny watching it. Lots of people were saying that having The Fray open would really help get people psyched up for the show but I really didn't notice anyone getting too excited. Of course I started falling asleep after the third song. Just because you are a hometown band doesn't necessarily mean you are liked.

Well, no North American crowd can compare to South America. It's a lot different down there. Even with Mexico City. I think it's a cultural difference. We Americans are more reserved. Or uptight. Whatever you want to call it.

Oh i loved the Fray. outside of the obvious How To Save A Life song i knew NONE of it. but i'm eager to get an album, they are Coldplay-esque in a non-u2-ripoff kinda way, imo. I did feel bad, the same guy that got in my face bout my statements about Jack White was also pi**ed off about the Fray, tellin em to get off the stage, etc. Man i wanted to punch that guy in the back of the head!

I seriously was in the douche/dumb girl section. I had about 5 or more friends with me so i wasn't alone in enduring it. No, no one threw anything at them, the crowd seemed very receptive outside of the jack white fanboy in front of me. And i was DEFINITELY right about that, White isn't NEALY established <or humble> enough to be in a film about legendary guitarists. I was thinking someone from the early 90's with name recognition should of been involved in it.

LOL@Desert Sky. Just goes to show how different each show could be. I'm sure the band drowned out their dumb comments.  ;)

Did the Denver show have the UFO in it? At Rice Eccles there was some sort of(I ssume) dirigible that floated north of the stadium during 4-5 songs about mid-set. It had blue and red lights attached and bobbed right to left and then slowly glided down.

Maybe the aliens came back to collect the band?  :D

uh, WOAH. no but that would of been great! wow.

Of course, all crowds are different and wherever you are in a crowd will have a wholly different experience. For my own part, I would easily say that I've found Dublin crowds by far the worst for my U2- I thought this was just me and then talked to my best friend who saw them with me in Dublin and Paris on 360- and he agreed that the Dublin crowd was extremely tame by comparison- despite all the stereotypes. But I bet someone elsewhere in the crowd in Dublin would have had a totally different view!  :D

Uhmmm...ok. Then I don't know what it was we saw. There were dozens of us who were watching this thing and the band for a bit or two. It moved smoothly from left to right and up and down very fast but always glided  smoothly to a stop. I was sure at some point Bono was gonna belt out "Beam me up Captain!" at any moment. Strange.  ;D

There was a news helicoptor flying around Denver. That's as close as we got to aliens, but I wasn't really watching the sky too much.

Maybe it was an alien trying to figure out the U2 spaceship and possibly wanting to purchase it when the tour is over.

LOL, Jennifer! Maybe I should purchase it for my return to Mars... My ship is old... :)
