Title: Your Personal Highlight Of Glastonbury......
Post by: A_Fly_On_The_Wall on June 24, 2011, 05:37:52 PM
For me, it was when U2 got the crowd to sing along to "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". It showed me that they managed to get the crowd on their side, despite them not being fanatical about U2.

Another splendid surprise for me was when they belted out "Bad". I thought Bono did a fantastic job of blasting out the vocals and it was a hugely memorable performance.

I was a little disappointed not to see "City Of Blinding Lights" and "Magnificent", but I was more than happy with everything else the band offered. Another brilliant twist was ending with "Out Of Control". Pure genius.

I also could not believe the crowd's reaction to "With Or Without You". One of the greatest things I have ever heard. It's not often a crowd makes more noise than the band during a song, but they did during that perfomance.

Overall, U2's performance at Glastonbury 2011 will go down in history as being a spectacular array of musical talent. I'm certain that people will be talking about it for years in the future, and so they should be.

Can't pick one, but a few;

1) UTEOTW.
2) The crowd singing along during Stay. THAT is when you know the crowd are onside - when they sing to the rareties
3) The entirety of Vertigo
4) Bad- and the crowd singing afterwards. Just in case anyone doubted that U2 won Glastonbury.
5) The entirety of Pride
6) 'This is our first single....' The most perfect closer imaginable.

Stay aint no rarity  . It hung around the UK top 10 for a while if I remember rightly...

I only heard the first half rather than watched and I thought Bad sounded incredible. Even SBS had move life than it has on this tour to this point.

Bad - they save it for special nights I believe.
Out of Control - great ending. Had me punching the air!

I forgot to add that I really enjoyed the bit with that guy from the International Space Station before Beautiful Day. I thought that was very heart-felt and touching.

I was also surprised they didn't play Zooropa after it being present on the tour lately.

Even Better Than the Real Thing - The intro was so intense!
One - One of the better performances I've ever heard. Edge's guitar-work was sensational.
Bad - The whole damn thing.
I Still Haven't Found - The crowd singing along...it was magical.
With Or Without You - The climax was incredible.
Yellow (Snippet) - Thought Bono did a great job with it.
Beautiful Day - The lead-in with the guy from the International Space Station sent shivers down my spine.

The ZooTV visuals (The Fly, spinning heads in MW) and the Yellow snippet were particularly good.

Stay was Number 2 in the singles chart at Xmas 94  no less which apparently is a big deal here in the UK.

OOC - as I predicted would be the closer

It is, but it's certainly not well known among casual fans. I had never heard it before I became a U2 fan, none of my friends have, and in Dublin it got no real reaction in 2009.

It's an age thing. It was all over the telly (not just MTV) for a year or so when it came out. It was a massive hit.

I also thought the entire performance of Stay was beautiful. It was nice to see that Bono and Edge had the entire Glasto' crowd in the palm of their hands during that song.

I Will Follow was also a perfect performance

You must have missed all those under 30's in the front , btw, Glastonbury always has a wide age range no matter the act, some people from the 60's still attend it.

If I had to pick a #1 highlight, it would be With Or Without You.  THAT was the PERFECT performance of that song, it is impossible to get any better than that.  That is how With or Without You should be played and sung.

but also:

2. Out of Control as the closer.  It was perfect and the energy was incredible
3. The art in Even Better Than The Real Thing
4. The crowd sing-along in Bad and Still Haven't Found
5. One

1/ Even Better Than The Real Thing and those visuals

2/ The Fly

3/ "Let it go, and so FADE AWAY" in Bad. His voice was vintage here and when the crowd took over  :) :)

4/ The crowd taking over One so early

5/ With Or Without You and the fact that the crowd were dying to hear it, and when they got there wish they took charge of vocals

6/ The fact that I Will Follow and Out Of Control are still amazing. And Out Of Control was a huge surprise in my opinion

My personal highlight is Bono singing Jerusalem (ridiculous to some but a brilliant Bono moment to me) as they went into Streets. I was in tears at that point which I don't think has happened before from watching a screen. That's how much this whole thing meant.

Zane Lowe is ten times better than Mark Tw*tcliffe.

When it went to BBC4 and he just stood there not being funny for 2 minutes, I was on the brink of head-butting the screen.

The Edge.  This guy's still gonna be cool when he's 60.

I LMAO when Mark Radcliffe told the anecdote of the night when he first saw a U2 gig at Birmingam Uni in 1980 and he had his Ford Escort stolen and The Edge came out after the gig and commiserated with him.

My highlight was when The Fly started and the Zoo TV graphics started flashing on the screen. I didn't care if it was so un-original of them or ithat Magnificent was gone, it was just fantastic. I actually squealed "Zoooo" at that point because I was so excited! Best version of The Fly after Zoo TV original and Elevation Boston.

I also quite loved the graphics on the screen for EBTTRT. They were visually stunning.

Okay, well I think there's something about these what, 3 current The Fly's that is just awesome. I personally don't like the Vertigo version in the least! It's actually kind of boring. But U2 are pulling it off well on 360.

I dunno, maybe it's the visuals that got me...

The moment during the intro to The Fly when Bono is looking over to his right watching the U2 protest being completely shot down before it had even started and he just shows a little smile to say "HAHA nothing will beat us tonight." very satisfying to know that their most important show for 25 years was not spoilt and Bono inadvertently looks very cool at the same time. I was there. Incredible experience.

From being there:

The whole Zoo TV opening. Brilliant. The visuals for EBTTRT were fantastic, and the Fly was rocking with those words flashing on screen. Was next to a few mad U2 fans who knew all the lyrics, just like me.

One and Still Haven't Found. The crowd participation was immense.

Bad. I was really, really surprised how many people in the crowd knew the words to this. A girl who went with me, who is nothing more than a very casual fan, even screamed when the opening notes were struck by Edge. A really great performance.

Pride. Again for audience participation, absolutely fantastic.

The Yellow snippet. I guess you had to be there, but it was AMAZING!
Only negatives:

- GOYB was crap. even at the front nobody cared. I guess they had to play it, but the setlist would have been better with, say, NYD in there. This is ALLOWED to be a nostalgia show, remember, as it was a one off festival performance. I had a few friends who didn't really like U2 with me. They stayed from one - GOYB. they enjoyed one, streets, i will follow, still havent found, but their interest started to wane during elevation. GOYB was the final straw for them and they left to see DJ shadow.
- MOS. It was a good performance of the song, but a bit of a crowd killer. I know they had to play something from NLOTH so perhaps it should have been there. I don't know what I think really. Also OOC last - again a bit torn. Live i thought it was OK, and enjoyed it, but some people around me didn't know it. Then I watched it on TV and the reaction was great. Hmm. I think it should have been there, but not last perhaps. Play 40 after?
- They definitely should have played 40. I would have LOVED the crowd to sing that on their way out of the Pyramid field. And they certainly would have.
- Bono could have chatted to the audience a TEEENY bit more. and I mean casual chat, not spiritual, profound rubbish. Like  'how's it going glastonbury, are you enjoying yourself?' etc. This was a very very minor issue though. Not really much of a problem.

THAT SAID overall it was a GREAT performance. Might even been the best I've seen them; even over their performances in Dublin 2 years ago. The ZooTV opening, bar being SLIGHTLY out of time for the first verse of Even Better, was amazing. I absolutely loved it.

Well done lads!
