Title: The best live moment
Post by: dferry09 on July 10, 2011, 02:22:44 PM
Regardless of whether you were there or not, what was the one live performance that gave you the most goosebumps. One you can watch over and over again and not get bored.

My pick is this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDkBzkA9L4s

Quite simply, the best thing I've ever seen U2 do. Bono screaming into the sky following his fathers death, during the most amazing intro ever. Id pay thousands to go back and witness it personally.... if only. :(

Indeed, simply EPIC! 10 years ago, and still by far the best Streets-transition ever!

RTSS / Streets- easily my favourite U2 moment of all time, followed by the Superbowl.

On a personal preference, my favourite live moment which I was present for is easily the opening of the Torino show. EBTTRT is definitely a better opener than Return of the Stingray Guitar, but Stingray was *THE* perfect opener for *that* show. It announced to the universe that Bono was back and better than ever, and was an insane moment to be a part of-  especially wielding part of a giant Irish flag!

My favorite live moment was Zooropa live!

No youtube footage of Popmart Sydney 1998 during One. Lightning bolts across the sky after Hutchence's death, and pouring rain.

Bottle that.

But y'know. Got the full citrus experience in Melbourne.

Bad - Live Aid

the performance that propelled them from being a young group with a few big songs to being the most important group of the decade. It is pretty amazing that they are regarded along with Queen as having the best performance that day when the competition was legendary acts like the Who, a reformed Zeppelin, Mick Jagger, Sting, Bowie, Madonna, Dylan, McCartney, etc....

RTSS / Streets- easily my favourite U2 moment of all time
This is the perfect way to play Streets.

Not All I Want Is You. Not Bad. Not Please. But Running to Stand Still.

Well, Running to Stand Still when performed as the epic Zoo TV version :P

That Streets performance is definitely amazing and Streets will always be my favorite. But the other that's always incredible is With or Without You from Rattle and Hum. Just too perfect and Bono's voice was as good as it will ever get in that version.

I honestly think there are a few "best live moments".  It is just too hard for me to choose one. The few mentioned here are all top of the line and amazing.

Bono revealing the American flag during the Streets tribute to 9/11 at the Super Bowl...

I fail to see why this one isn't one of the most talked about moments in their history

SBS - rattle and hum
opening of Point Depot on New Years
COBL opening a show on Vertigo tour
live Hallelujah prayer/chorus of RTSS (this song needs to be played again)
the fly elevation tour - boston DVD

but I dont think anything beats the superbowl

Agreed. That version of The Fly is the best I've ever heard.

Watching the opening song (EBTTRT) of my first show ever (soldier field) gives me goosebumps ever time. The buildup, the pounding drums, the slide solo, then.... mayhem!

I love the *intro* of Elevation Fly, but the actual song is much worse, IMO. The problem is, it's all a relentless barrage with the riff played over and over, and while that works in itself, it's a different song. What I love about The Fly is its unpredictability and sheer sense of insanity, created by sometimes having the riff, sometimes those long, echoing guitar notes etc- generally varying it up.

Combine the Elevation Tour intro with the Vertigo/360 Tour Fly and you have perfection!

I kind of agree.

The elevation tour version doesnt really go anywhere. Not so sure the vertigo tour version is any good though, I'm not a huge fan. My favourite would be a mix of the ZooTV/360 versions.

For me, it's 360 all the way. Watched Boston earlier and had to think for a while before deciding that I don't like it. It's just kinda chaotic. I heard The Fly during it's second performance this year in Baltimore and it's so fresh right now. The opening riff is so crisp and cuts like a knife. That's how it always should be IMO

the light show is ridiculous for that song too.... right when it switched from the yellow slow spotlights to the madness of orange and strobe, following a brief 2 second audience silence due to awe and sensory overload, the crowd went bananas... so sweet

nah theyre in different keys
Ive played elevation intro in the vert/zooTV key and it aint the same
same with playing the V/ZTV version in the elevation key

personally i prefer the elevation way because it doesnt slow down during the verses, choruses and solos better - like what they did to UTEOTW live, its played in a different key than the album and I think its loads better live

If you`re an old fart like me, your favorite moment might be the first time you saw them live in your first U2 concert. Thus for me, it was 11:12:87 and for the opening moments of the Joshua Tree concerts - as featured in R&H.

the band walks on stage against a red silhouette. ... and the music builds ... and then Adam amps in and Edge starts jangling and Larry let's loose on the drums, and then BOOM! Blinding lights came on and Bono sprints around the stages to welcome the audience, and you wonder if you`ll ever feel so alive again. And then you hear a great concert for a couple of hours, with some interesting accents and humble troubadours.  Words can`t really describe the moment.

In 2001 after Joey Ramone died Bono sang part of "I Remember You" by the Ramones in Cleveland.
One of the Chicago shows in 2009 he sang part of "Rock the Casbah" during Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Being a huge punk fan I was beyond stoked, all I want to hear now is him singing either the Damned or the Dead Boys.

I think the moment they come onto the stage for any live show is just magical.  You bought your tickets, you waited, you check out setlists, then all of a sudden you're there and they are about to take the stage.  Nothing can compare.
