Title: Best Stadium for the Claw
Post by: UToo on July 10, 2011, 11:57:42 PM
For those who follow the tour closely I was wondering where everyone though the claw was the most visually pleasing and what stadium it was the most appropriate for.  I haven't been to a show on the tour but I was curious about the opinions of those who have.  It looked very good in the Rose Bowl on film and I think it will look great in Pittsburgh with the city skyline visible from the stadium. (should make for a great COBL performance) Pics would be cool too.

M&T Stadium was quite nice.  Claw fit well in the field and there was enough room for GA.  Plus the Inner Harbor is not too far away.  Within walking distance.

Montreal cause it was custom built  ;D

But seriously I think Toronto, with the CN tower right besides getting lit up synchronized with the Claw was quite an amazing sight !

I agree, the stadiums that are truly 360 like the rose bowl and the new camp seem to work the best.  One issue with american football stadiums is that many of them are built with open end zones. (and croke park) this turns it more into U2280 or so.  I think that even though it has the open end zone heinz field pittsburgh can make up for it with the great urban landscape that will make up for the missing audience.

These images are great.  At the end of the tour, it would be nice to have a collection to see the Claw in all of the  locations.  This is one of the few U2 tours that I can remember where the stage is exactly the same for each and every show, minus a few tweeks here and there.

The Claw also had some problems in Cowboys Stadium (Dallas), since the top of the spire was cut off by Jerry-Vision.

I do like those stadiums where the Claw is visible from outside the venue that allow for the passersby to get a glimpse and wonder what the hell is going on in that place.  Soldier Field is a good example of that.

Satellite's gone, way up to the sky.....

I wouldn't mind taking the show it from what looks to be a posh dorm room with a window facing into the stadium.

You may have a good poster idea on your hands there, and i wish the claw poked its way right through jerry-vision.

Hands down: Winnipeg.

It was basically a pub gig for the band and the Claw dwarfed the stadium.

Anahiem was awesome for the claw, it seemed like it fit in that stadium nicely.  I could be wrong but I think that was the first baseball stadium they played at?  I know Oakland is a football/baseball venue.

Anaheim definitely was a great fit for the claw but truthfully Rose Bowl was spectacular. It was just perfect for that venue. Although it was a nightmare trying to get to your seats but once you finally did it was incredible.

I really like the idea of the claw in baseball stadiums.  It allows more seats to be closer to the stage because baseballs stadiums are more circular in nature than football/soccer stadiums.

Of course... it was pi**ing down with rain. But funny given they couldn't shut the roof due to the stage...

I think it looked cool in soldier field as there was a great view of lake michigan right outside of my nosebleed seats  ;)

However, it definitely looks the best in the stadium that is on the cover of the tour programs, Belin I believe. It's stunning

Totally agree , Montreal the sound was superb, I had friends who lived quite  a few miles away and they could hear Bono singing  and the music from the Hippodrome , my co-workers heard it from their homes who also live far away  it  was that good . The best so far for sound and performance. The claw also looked great , being under it in the red zone., and from the outside .

I don't have a photo from '09 but the Claw looked so beautiful in the night sky at the Meadowlands. That was the old stadium. I think it will look even more beautiful in the new one. I'll let you know after July 20th  ;)

I just hope there is no bomb threat this time so the fighter planes don't have to circle up above us ! I could see those fighter planes, I could see those fighter planes. They should have played Bullet the Blue Sky!  :D

The Claw probably looks beautiful at night in any of the stadiums though I do agree, some are more stunning than others.

Montreal Acoustics were spectacular indeed.  Having seen the show in Toronto in 09, Montreal was way, way better.  On a totally different planet.

I've only seen it in E. Lansing and Chicago so far, but I'd vote for Soldier Field. Seeing the spire as we were driving in the first night was really special. SF crew know how to handle a huge crowd. Concessions and restrooms are convenient and reasonably clean (though NOT the Leprecans!). Parking is available under the building!
And they are chill enough to let the band come out if they will. Got to meet The Edge this year.
Sound is amazing, everywhere in the stadium.
To me, Chicago is U2-town!

Might have another opinion after St. Louis and Minneapolis, though. ;)

Nobody has mentioned Norman, Oklahoma (was anyone there?  ;D ) The Claw was sitting sideways and the field was very narrow, which yielded an amazing view from lower section seats. Kind of a "best of" the field and seating, because you could get up off the ground a little ways for great sight lines and yet still be within a short distance of the catwalk. My favorite venue of the 360 tour, and maybe my favorite concert so far.

However, for the most beautiful stadium that I've seen, I'd vote for Soldier Field - the modern asymmetrical architecture and the Chicago Skyline as a backdrop for the Claw made for a stunning combination.

I agree with K2, Norman and the sideways stage was awesome!  I was on the catwalk rail on Edge's side, and I bet there weren't more than maybe 20 rows of people behind me.  Very cool. GA on the sides may not have been so good, though.

Agree completely.  St. Louis will be interesting with the stage backing up to the outfield seats where I'll be sitting.  There hasn't been a lot of concerts at the new Busch Stadium since it only opened in 2006.  Dave Matthews Band played there a couple years ago , and the Eagles were there last summer but that's about it.

Raymond James Stadium - Tampa. You had the Claw in one end zone, and a 100' pirate ship in the other! Bono even pointed it out: "You've got a pirate ship...we've got a space ship!"

well that is pretty cool... Did Bono fly over to the pirate ship, shoot off a canon as if the bucs just scored a touchdown and then walk the plank into a mass of fans?

Haha! That would have been awesome! Although, I saw him "walk the plank into a mass of fans" (backwards, off the ramp) on the Elevation Tour opener in 2001...I hope he won't try that move ever again!
