Title: Why hasn't Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses Been Played More?
Post by: Miami66 on August 27, 2011, 10:11:17 AM
It's only been played 79 times in concert. I wish they'd play this song more often. Does anyone know why they don't?

This song is one of my favorites on AB and I would live to hear it live. It would be perfect for the acoustic section on the next tour (I think they had some troubles playing it full band which might be why it hasn't been played much).

Adam has said in the past that it's pretty difficult to play full band

For U2 that is.

At the ZooTV Hershey rehearsal show, they started playing it full band but they messed it up so they played it acoustically.

The band has said they don't much care for the song either, didn't they? Something about it being lyrically great but musically unsatisfying for them.

I really enjoyed this in Dublin in 2005. I wasn't even into U2 yet at the time and yet it's one of the moments from that concert I firmly remember- singing "Hey hey, sha la la...." with 80,000 people!  :D

One of my favorites! I would love to hear it live - even an acoustic version.

I remember them playing it during the first Leg of ZOO TV.  I thought that was the only AB track that didn't translate well live.

I agree.

I would have preferred they kept it in the set for the stadium shows, but if they were going to drop one song from AB and replace it with another greatest hit then I feel they chose to drop the right song.

They played it acoustically a couple of time during ZOO TV Outside Broadcast, but even that didn't work.  Makes you wonder why it was the 5th AB single (and a rare Top 40 American Hit at that).

Probably because it is quite commercial sounding.

The Temple Bar Remix does sound somewhat commercial, but it also sounds like four men abandoning the futuristic sound of AB and back to glorifying the past.

They played it in Chicago at the final show they did there for the Vertigo tour. I'm pretty sure that Bono introduced it by saying that this was a song that they did not play too often and that he really didn't know why. It sounded good that night.

At Twickenham it didn't go down too well, as not many people knew it. It would go down well in a smaller venue, but not necessarily as a regualr/setlist staple. Sounds good live though.

I've always loved it live.  I remember Bono mentioning that he had to fight to get it on the album though.  Probably gets just pushed by the wayside without him.

Good idea to have this as Bono and Edge's new go-to acoustic song. Pleasant, commercial-sounding (as someone earlier said) song. (but of course so much more to us fans!)

I know B & E always pull out Stay and Stuck from their back pocket to play events and stuff, but please! New acoustic song after their vacation ;D

Their friend who died last year, Gerry Ryan, said it was the best song they ever recorded. Musically it's a little more complex than most of their songs which is probably the main reason it's not played much. Amazing song though, shame it has fallen by the wayside somewhat.

Yeah, it's a decent campfire tune with great lyrics, I've just spent five minutes figuring out the chord structure (didn't check if the key was right, but wouldn't make it too difficult if it wasn't). I like it as a U2 song, but find it's the least necessary on Achtung Baby. The band rightfully thought it was too familiar and straightforward and could've been on TJT so they wanted it out, but Bono: "the Mother Theresa of abandoned songs" saved it.

I find it more telling, but mainly worrying he didn't remember why the other guys didn't want it on the album...
Title: Re: Why hasn't Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses Been Played More?
Post by: Droo on October 01, 2011, 01:20:36 PM
Straightforward? The song contains some of Bono's best lyrics and imagery.

I would say that TTTYAATW or Ultraviolet are the least "necessary" on AB, but I also think saying which songs are "necessary" on an album is a silly and meaningless exercise.

I say Arms is the second weakest track on the album, but it fits the mood way better. Knowing the band didn't want Horses on the album makes it an odd fit.

And the whole necessary thing comes from the whole idea of perfect albums, groundbreaking records and general fanclub pastime overanalyzing things that's this whole site. :-)

Given that Wild Horses was played several times on the Vertigo Tour, I think it's safe to say the track isn't disliked by the band as much as some may think. From my recollection they were simply unhappy with the mix, musically.

I'm sure I heard one of the band saying they thought it was too long or something. I think it was a bit of a struggle for them to get it into a finished song. I really like it, but it's not one of my favourites on AB. I like it better than TTTYATW but that song gives a nice mellow break after MW and The Fly.

I remember it at Twickenham in 2005. It sounded very tired. Unless it gets a significant reworking to be more like the single version, it doesn't really go down well live.

They played it in Los Angeles on Vertigo second leg.  It was acoustic but it sounded damn good.  Also on the second USA leg of the Elevation Tour they played a snippet of it while transitioning out Bad and the intro for Streets.  That sounded pretty good as well.

The final Vertigo show was Hawaii.

U2 played it because a fan requested it and played the piano with U2.

Sure, the fan got his 5 minutes of priceless U2 memories they will never forget.

But the audience were suddenly transported to a horror scene where one of U2's singles from one of their greatest albums was murdered.

U2 have not yet recovered from that trauma, as they did not consider that song when they were dusting off some Achtung Baby songs for Glastonbury.

Cheers,

J

A lovely theory discredited more than a little by the fact not only did U2 consider that song when they were dusting off AB for Glastonbury, but we actually have full video and audio footage of them rehearsing it in their Glastonbury AB rehearsals in 'From The Sky Down'.

Or they just didn't rate it as highly as other songs, or feel that it suited the mood as well, or flat out didn't feel like it, or any of a thousand reasons why they don't play lots and lots of songs which they nonetheless still 'rate'?

I always thought they didn't play it much because they don't really think its that great.

I always considered it to be their weakest single from the 1990s.  I don't hate it, it's got some nice moments, but its never really got me excited.

I also remember reading somewhere - though don't ask me where - that they felt this song didn't work live, and the fact that they dropped it from the set relatively early on in the tour - unlike the other AB songs - to make room for a greatest hit would support that view.

I think it sounds ok live, but not as effective as the other AB songs, even though it's definitely one of my top 20 recorded U2 songs of all.

Maybe, if they must play acoustic songs this would be ideal for that slot provided they got it right.

^this plus

Well, you left my heart empty as a vacant lot (that's the best Bono can do as far as imagery?)

Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee  (do they really need to use Thee just to make it rhyme?)

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses is phenomenal. They should definitely have played it more.

What about these lyrics (my favorite)-

To a place where the wind calls your name

Hallelujah
Heaven's white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close

My favorite part as well. Stirred up beautiful imagery in my mind when I first heard to (still does). Does Bono sing "bitter rain" sometimes? What would you call this part of a rock song? Any technical names? Like... coda? These are the favorite parts of many U2 songs. Very intimate, with a beautiful melody to boot. Similarly seen on Elevation's :will you tell me something true, I believe in you" <3

What imagery, if I might ask? Those lines evoke imagery in my head too.

^eh, just typical romanticized happy images with a man I love dearly  ::) (not Adam, lol). y'know, cos humans have the abilty to sexualize nearly every song. I acutally couldn't quite make out the
"Heaven's white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close"
bit until you posted it. :-[

What kind of imagery does it evoke for you?

(side note: when I have better imageries, I will share. For instance, the opening to Unknown Caller sounds like a swampland unveiling through the tall river grass. The double-reed sound evokes crickets and toads, and what is meant to be birds to U2 sounded like butterflies flitting to me. But I'm going off-topic here  ;) )

Post by: EnduringChill on November 09, 2011, 05:44:18 AM
Thanks for clarifying that, Droo!
Let's see... the imagery for me is just what is described. I see the man and woman standing on a muddy bank of a churning river in the pouring rain. The man has little details, but the woman has short black hair and a long white dress that's getting splattered by the river (Heaven's white rose...). I don't know what they're doing there but I guess they're the characters of the song...
I have more weird imagery of people in songs such as Love Is Blindness and The Playboy Mansion.

Hallelujah
Heaven's white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close

They're Hardyesque.  8)

However, these 2 lines are musical genius:
Well you lied to me 'cos I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends

See, I think those are two of the more trite and unimpressive lines in the song. To each their own.

I thought EdgeUK8 was being sarcastic?

Not sarcastic, but maybe over-emphatic.  Out of the lines in the song, I do probably like those the best.  Too many cases in college where "we're just friends' right?" or "we can still be good friends" sort of made that part strike a chord with me personally.
