Ditto.

The song that got me into U2 and my second favourite U2 song of all time.

Impossible.

Went with Desire and Staring At The Sun. Could so easily have been Stay, Surrender, TTTYAATW, or Mothers of the Disappeared!

MOTD is one of the few album tracks on The Joshua Tree that I truly and deeply love.

Running To Stand Still and Red Hill Mining Town are the others.

Yep, it's nothing short of a forum disgrace that RHMT isn't doing that well in the other group.

Well thanks! Let's enjoy SATS together.

Intransigence is all around
Military still in town
Armor plated suits and ties
Daddy just won't say goodbye

Who uses the word intransigence in a song? But I like it!

............and to finish off my favorite verse in the song...........

Referee won't blow the whistle
God is good but will he listen
I'm nearly great but there's something missing
I left it in the duty free
But you never really belonged to me

Fabulous song, brilliant lyrics.

^Best lyrics. Definitely. I love how it doesn't really make sense until you read them out loud and hear the rhyme on "duty free" and "belong to me".

I think it's purely about the song, and how much you like it, whatever form it takes. If you appreciate a song for its live incarnation, for example, it's entirely proper I think to vote for it.

Well, THAT was a mistake! I didn't vote for Desire thinking it would be top 2 already. LOVE that song! Ugh!

Uh oh! SATS is also not where it should be! And, I wasn't going to agonize over my voting. Yet, I still am, just after not before.  :(

Let that be a lesson to you!

You must remember, a lot of the kids on here don't recollect Desire from the good old days when The Edge's red guitar really was on fire, and they just think of Desire as a song that he messes about on with an acoustic guitar during a lull in a concert.  :(

If there was any justice, Desire would be firmly in second place by now.

Desire on Lovetown and Zoo TV should have automatically granted it a spot here.

One featuring Edge shredding, YES shredding, on a solo at the end.

The other changed the song completely, Mirrorball Man at the helm.  :)

Even the acoustic on popmart wasn't bad. Having both Bono and Edge on guitar was interesting.

What sucks was that they never did go back to the original electric mix. They did for a performance or two, but it's never been the same since then.

And I've always been pro 90s, you know that  :D

Yeah, they've had 3 tours to revisit the song the way it was meant to be played, but they've chosen the easy route of acoustic schmoostic every time.  It's just laziness, plain and simple.

The great thing about the studio version though, is it sounds 'live'.

I agree that electric Desire is vastly better (Although I still didn't vote for it).

That said, the idea that they don't play electric Desire due to 'laziness' is inane. It's not exactly the most difficult song in the world, certainly not compared to some that they do play, and would require zero extra effort. For whatever God forsaken reason, the band apparently prefer playing it this way, unfortunately for all of us.

I couldn't agree more.  I'm glad to have come of age in a world where Desire was a huge radio hit.

It's a shame they don't play it live the way it should be played.  It's one of those songs that could easily be reinvented each time around, ZOO TV proved that.

I'm shocked. It's such a straightforward rock and roll song to me. How can it not get a bigger thumbs up response? I blew it, but looks like everyone else did too.  >:(

Clearly you would vote for the song with actual meaning and depth (SATS) over the foot-tapping-but-not-much-else song (Desire).

There is a meaning in Desire, if you don't see it you're not looking deep enough.

I don't consider "She makes me horny" to be "meaningful".

What about the other meaning of "Desire?"

Self indulgence and greed, look at Mirrorball man and Desire performances during Zoo TV. There was a reason that persona is put with that song.

Mirrorball Man was a creation well after Rattle & Ham was released. It was a reinterpretation of the song to fit the overall theme of the tour. Much like EBTTRT on PopMart had a decidedly different message and theme to it than on ZooTV and Achtung Baby.

Performances of Desire on Lovetown and subsequent tours strip that mood entirely from the song and return it to its very straightforward theme.

It's catchy, but it's no Zooropa or One.

Oh I wasn't trying to compare it to those. I think its a great track, it just sounded like you were putting down the song.

Desire is pure rock 'n' roll, the way U2 used to do it in the good ole days, be it Lovetown or Zoo TV style.  Definitely a top 30 U2 song IMHO.

No, I'm saying that in a one on one matchup against a song as stunningly deep as SATS, I think SATS is the clear winner.

I disagree.  Depth doesn' t necessarily mean much in rock music.

Even the meaning of Streets isn't terribly deep, yet look where it ranks here.

That's right; the meaning of songs is a largely subjective matter in practice.  Look at the way many people interpret One.

For me, Bono is singing about his tinnitus here:

There's an insect in your ear
If you scratch it won't disappear
It's gonna itch and burn and sting
You want to see what the scratching brings
Waves that leave me out of reach
Breaking on your back like a beach
Will we ever live in peace?
