Title: U2 Conference 2013 Program
Post by: Blue Silken Sky on January 15, 2013, 09:58:25 PM
Doesn't this sound awesome?

http://U2conference.com/program-2013/ (http://U2conference.com/program-2013/)

There are not enough U2 fans in my daily world, but I feel that even an hour spent in one of these sessions would give me my fix for the next four years or so...

(P.S. didn't know if this should have gone in news and rumors or meet ups...feel free to move, mods).

That's a lot to choose from. I'm going to the conference so I'm now finally curious about a lot of these presentations.

I'm seriously considering it.  Our family has a heavy saving philosophy for events (and U2 tours) just like this.  It's a bit a ride from the west coast though!  ;)

I really love U2 but jeez......a conference? I guess I haven't reached that level of super duper fandom yet.

It's in Cleveland the last weekend in April.
The last one was a lot of fun, even for a newbie who didn't know anyone yet, and who probably made herself sound foolish more than anything else ::)

Totally looking forward to this one (which is waay closer to my house than last time)!
Plus, the rock hall is still showing U23D, right? ;D
And best of all I'll get to meet up w forum friends this time (instead of annoying mr jab by dragging him along like last time :D )

It's in CLEVELAND!!! That's where I live, folks! Hopefully I will have enough time then (wedding coming in July) to attend. And, also, I toy with having a BBQ at my house for people from the forum. ;)

Wow. I just read that list. I think I could almost have presented at the conference the sermon I wrote when I lead a U2 service at my church. My sermon was "Spiritual Journeys Through The Music of U2." I posted the words on my blog.

mmm... barbecue... ;)

and hey - maybe they'd still have room for one more presenter?  dunno, but registration isn't up, yet, so maybe?

Everyone at work is pushing me to take the time off (it's a crazy week at school and students who I've had for four years are presenting their senior theses). So maybe the only one who needs convincing is husband...he'll have to stay home and take care of the pets!

^_^ I can actually relate. I love U2 but I'm not sure I would want to spend time at a conference discussing them. It's much more fun to congregate with fans at shows, at least to me. More power to those of you going though!:)

Does anyone know what the registration fee may be?  Or perhaps what it was last time around?  I'd just a baseline.  Husband's latest threat is, "What if the registration fee is like $2000!"  ;)

I find U2's music to be more of a personal experience which I really don't know if it can be disected and broken down in a conference. But that's probably just me. I've been to so many conferences for work that have bored the hell out of me that I would rather just sit back and listen to Zooropa like I did tonight then talk about the band for a 8 hours. But for those that are going I hope you all have fun.

dunno, but bono gave us a shout out at the raleigh concert ;)

and yeah, initially, it was a bit surreal hearing music professors discuss the compositional principles behind U2's music.  i thought those discussions were fascinating (cuz i'm a degree-toting music geek with some audio training), but most of my regular music professors were too high-brow to acknowledge that anything in the pop genre would have any value...

MG - BBQ sounds cool!! We may get to see the new house if it works out.

A few of us are "rooming" together to help on costs. I'm planning on flying in on April 25th and leaving the 28th.

I'm pretty sure U23D will be playing since they know we are all coming that weekend! That's a must-see for us all.

Wow I'm getting even more excited about this. I thought I was excited a few months ago but now I'm even more excited!!

I can understand that. I just know I really regret not having gone to the first one because everyone I know who was there had a blast. I am also going to connect with some friends, some of whom I haven't met yet.

To save on fuel maybe you could park in my driveway then we drive the U2 diva-mobile the rest of the way? Just throwing that out there... ;)

U2 conference sounds... kind of boring, but it would be very fun to have a meet up. Unfortunately I know my schedule would never work out to go all the way to Cleveland in April. :o Even though I'd love to go there sometime. I hope everyone who's going has fun!

Actualy, some of the essays being presented sound like interesting topics... hm. It's one thing to write and present one and another thing to listen to other people's presentations, though. Not sure if I could pay attention that long.

•Lunch on April 26 and 27 at the Marriott Key Center hotel

The U2 Conference showdown at my house (d)evolved into this: U2 conference for just me or nice summer vacation for the two of us.

...d'oh.

For what it's worth, I'm pushing for Ireland (U2ourism, of course, and I've never been) and Norway (big music festival with 2nd favorite band plus some up and coming groups I like).

^thanks for the info, lorijane!

So I see on the site that the conference proper is April 26 & 27, a Friday and Saturday. Since I have to work on Friday, that only leaves Sat that I can make it. Might not be worth my $250 then

I'm not even sure I can afford that price right now given all my wedding expenses. I wish they had some pass for Clevelanders that was less money.

But, regardless of whether or not I go, if everyone's in town, I may still consider a BBQ and have everyone over. I'm sure Crow wouldnt mind. He loves having people over too!

What an offer! I'd be excited with just the hall! Ohio may as well be on the other side of the world for me! The only time I hear anything about it is during Presidential election.

Everyone of has a life and we all enjoy U2, that's why we are on this forum. We've made friends, shared interests, talked about every thing under the sun, and some of us have met each other in person whether it was at a show or for something else.

I'm sure this never occurred to some of you, but it isn't just about the conference. It's about friendships (new and old), having fun, obtaining some new knowledge, and just having a good time. For some of us, this is a vacation from our normal lives.

So I'm sorry that some of you think your lives are better then those of us who have chosen to go to the conference. That's your issue, not mine.

Are any of you planning to go to the session explaining U2's sound to non-musicians? I selfishly believe that came as a result of a pitch I sent to @U2 (though I'm sure many other people pitched the same idea ;)).

I think that session sounds amazing, so I'm hoping someone will give us a review back here.

a fun tidbit from the rock hall website...

http://rockhall.com/event/u2--trans-2013-conference/ (http://rockhall.com/event/u2--trans-2013-conference/)

and there's this, too...
http://rockhall.com/exhibits/u2-3d/ (http://rockhall.com/exhibits/u2-3d/)

not to mention i'm excited to hear what bill carter has to say.... and i'm looking forward to seeing that documentary on U2 fandom (that was meant to be a part of the first conference, i think, but some tech issue kept that from happening, if memory serves).

and as a trained musician, i'm interested in the sessions w Christopher Endrinal... just because it's fun to hear someone break down U2 songs into theoretical pieces :)
well, pretty much any of it i could chalk up to professional development... as an aspiring indie artist & all... ;)

i like the tim neufield sessions about constructing community (useful tool in 2013, to be sure)... AND a session featuring one of my favorite forum friends on friday morning... AND i've always wanted to attend a U2charist...

AND a gathering at an irish pub with some of my forum favorites... AND not one, but TWO tribute band concerts (in addition to the U23D/closest-i-can-get-to-the-real-thing-right-now screening).  ;D

did i forget anything?  i'm sure i did... like the fact that last time i wanted to go to more sessions than i had time to attend (they overlapped) so i ended up buying the book of all those papers so i could catch up on the stuff i missed ;D

Wow Jab!

I want to see the Bill Carter talk too.

Even though I'm a professional musician in my head and can construct music in my head, I may skip any of the music talks. I'm more curious about the marketing and representation talks, because I'm a strategic thinker.

But I do plan on spending quality time at the Hall and with my favorite forum friends!

Now that I realized that some of the talks involve the technical side of music and analysis of its evolution (or, that was as far as I could tell from the titles of the talks), I would love to see those. A lot of the other topics sound boring to me, but I'm sure everyone can enjoy what they're interested in. Too bad I can't go because it's expensive, and I'll be performing in the talent show on the 26th, plus it's a long drive, but I had to express how interesting I think this sounds. And how envious I am for the people who are going! I hope you enjoy.

I think what's wrong with society is people thinking that a U2 conference is the end of civilization.

Well isnt the point of Christianity about Jesus? It just seems you might have gotten away from that. U2 have abandon their faith with coexist, macphisto, and other songs in the 90's like Wake Up Deadman.
Well Im glad people liked it, but doesnt mean it's justified.
Title: Re: U2 Conference 2013 Program
Post by: EnduringChill on April 26, 2013, 07:38:05 PM
I think it depends on how one views religion. Maybe for some people, Christianity is all about Jesus, but I think other Christians can interpret their faith in different ways. And I don't believe that U2 has abandoned their faith. I can't say for sure, but I think they still remained loyal to their beliefs throughout the 90's- MacPhisto was humorous and not meant to be taken seriously, and Wake Up Dead Man (as well as If God Will Send His Angels, come to think of it) describes the struggles with trying to remain true to their faith, not abandoning it completely. There are songs from the next three albums that can be interpreted spiritually. Also, I don't think "coexist" has anything to do with abandoning one's faith- it's about embracing the idea that there are other beliefs out there, which is a valid and open-minded gesture. But all of that ^ is speculation and interpretation- we can't know how the band feels in regards to religion for sure.

Back on topic, I would love to see a U2 church service, even though I'm not of the Christian religion... only if the right songs were selected, though.

Also love seeing the songs broken down theoretically. Just fun! And lots to think about with the band's creative process... And how they find success in uncharted musical territory... And how would that affect my own songwriting if I tried exploring ideas far off of the beaten path... Fascinating stuff!!

Oh- and so many cool meetings with faraway friends ;D

I can see where some people might be sceptical however adding U2's music to a church service does not necessarily make the service about U2 or their music. It might even make religion accessable and acceptable to someone who might otherwise eschew it. Everytime I watch Rattle and Hum the scene that touches me the most is the service in Harlem. That choir and U2 might now have been signing about the same thing however when they sang together they certainly found common ground.

I have never been to a U2Eucharist and look forward to it, if only out of curiosity. Try to keep an open mind.

Disturbing?  Really?  Why be so judgmental?

People gather in all sorts of places to discuss their passions and their stories.  As with anything else, their are endless connections to be made.  I'm not there but I've been following online and so far their have been presentations and discussions on world affairs, political activism, music production, graphic design, marketing, lyrical interpretations, and other personal journeys where U2 has happened to intersect.

Exactly. U2 reaches me on a personal level... And their music has touched so many other people the same way... When I'm in a GA line, I feel like I'm communing with "my people."

Not that this helps support anything, but ever hear of Star Trek conventions? Ok, yeah, those can be disturbing too. But I've attended them cuz I'm a geek and it's a lot of fun talking to people who similarly built their life's philosophy around a great show tried to promote a peaceful future between species in the universe. (Okay, it didnt always work out that way, but still... Star Trek is certainly a lot more positive than a lot of other science fiction in its portrayal of humanity's future.)

I wouldn't disparage any fan gathering/conference/convention. Anything that brings people together to intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically connect is wonderful. I don't know about everyone else, but I wish I had more opportunities to meet people from outside my family/work/friend circle. How very nice to make those new connections with people who love a band you do! I know our forum family members are having a blast and I'm proud of them for being ambassadors of U2 affection.  ;D

Speaking of fan conferences, I saw a lovely buzzfeed post about a Corgi gathering:

Have a beautiful day!

A U2 Conference is absurd, I don't care if you disagree with me. Do you really need or want to know how U2 music reflects to non-musicians. Do you really need to meet with others to discuss a group that hasn't released a song in 4 years. I am all for getting excited when they are touring and maybe even meeting up with other fans going to a concert but this just is sad.

They are a music group, not a religion, Bono is not God or the second coming. He was a prolific song writer and one of the best front man of one of the best rock groups in history. Now he is one of the richest rock stars in history and a sell out. Now his fans instead of expecting great music just expect some tidbit if information to keep them popular.

Do we really need to pick apart everything they do and analyze every thing they have written and recorded. Will there be roundtable discussions on U2's relevance, spirituality. I just find the fact that there is even a conference dedicated to U2 to be disturbing.

Im glad someone has finally has said this!
Giving a U2 sermon at church is really disturbing too.

I was at a church's Christianity in pop culture series on a fri night. They analyzed the scripture in the lyrics. It was a huge hit and by no means embarassing. Even showed a lot of live videos and the wits video which I'd never seen. Anything that gets people interested in the church is ok with me.

No way, we don't take U2 lyrics as being sacred or anything to learn from. U2 takes notes from the Bible.

Well,I'm not Christian. I'm Unitarian Universalist. So....

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Matt McGee, the @u2 staff who were in Cleveland, to Scott Calhoun and the team behind the U2 Confab, and the staff at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for a fantastic weekend in Cleveland!

It was a wonderfully diverse program, and an awesome group of people to share the weekend with.

The party last night with Unforgettable Fire was amazing - 3 hours and 20 minutes of great music - the vibe was awesome and spirited and it was great to be there.

Thx for all the kind words, everyone. I think @U2 (and me) gets way too much credit for this. The conference is Scott's idea and baby, and we do whatever we can to help out. In '09 it was promotion, and this time it was promotion and putting together some non-academic sessions. But Scott is really the conductor and driving force and needs to get more credit than he does. So please give it to him. :)

Such a wonderful weekend. Thx to all who made it that way.

i've seen 3 u2 tributes the rarest stuff that comes to mind is
Party Girl
Wire
WGRYWH
HMTM
Lemon
Numb
Zooropa
Gone
Kite
IGC

I'm pretty sure, but perhaps others with better memories of the details, that they did play Gone, Kite, In God's Country, Wire, and Wild Horses...

McGee, please tell Scott that the program was a perfect balance of Academia and Mainsteam, and the details - everything from the hotel, to the passes to the Rock Hall, to the evening events and Key Note Speakers - was a little slice of U2 heaven.

It was a massive jump forward from the 2009 Confab program, which was awesome.

That spirit we saw last night was a reflection of 100+ people having the time of their life, living what they love, after a weekend of talking about what they love. Great weekend.

They could have been a little better. Plus it was a hard venue to play-- too much open space, not so great acoustics, lots of brick. I didn't stay for the whole show but for the songs I was there for their timing seemed a little off.

Unforgettable Fire was fabulous! They know the songs and they know how to present them, plus they are all very engaging with the audience. And they don't actually pretend to be the band members.

I still can't quite describe the Friday night tribute band. That was an interesting experience. ???

do you remember their name?

I believe at one point he attempted a "Bono Speech." Not a good idea.

they were pretty good. .. .until the singer opened his mouth  ::)
I mean, it wasn't as bad as karoake or anything but still - it wasn't Bono by any stretch of the imagination  ;)

Here I had thought, "What? There's a U2 cover band in Canton? I could have booked them for my wedding!"

Good thing I didnt check that out. I think I'll stick to the band I got. :)

yea, there was a one-show-and-done U2 tribute called Artificial Baby. i heard the same thing from the U2 fangirls i know that saw them. they were good till the singer started to sing. he even admitted to the women i know that he was only singing as a favor to the other guys, he isn't a big U2 fan.  ::)

The singer physically resembled John Belushi but didn't really sound like him. And yes, he did a Bono speech which was not a good idea. Leave Bono speaches to Bono.

The band was good. The venue wasn't great for them. Lead singer may not be a good fit for the band though.
