Title: Has any other band you've seen had a louder crowd than U2?

For me it was Pearl Jam.

It's really hard for me to judge the loudness. A stadium crowd singing along to ISHFWILF on a live recording sounds like it must be really loud, but then in person it didn't feel that overwhelming. Maybe all that space and being outdoors makes it hard for the sound to be concentrated (you can tell I'm very scientific, can't you ;)).  It feels louder being on the floor in a venue with a 2,000 person capacity (and I've never seen U2 in such a venue).

The Jacksons' audience was half screaming kids; the Violent Femmes had a lot of screaming girls (late '80s), those two crowds were at least as loud as any U2 crowd I've ever seen. The Who's crowd ('79, '82 and '89) was extremely loud, too.

Slayer's crowd the first time I saw them (1991) might've been louder than all others, though. It's really hard to say; like BSS said, the venue plays a huge part in perceived crowd loudness. The Jacksons' and the Who's shows were in a domed football stadium (which makes the crowd noise much, much louder), and the Femmes were in a 4,000-seat theater. I'm giving it to Slayer's crowd because the first time I saw them was in a 15k-capacity outdoor amphitheater and that crowd was INSANE. The chants of "SLAYYYYER! SLAYYYYER!" over and over were deafening.

Muse at wembley stadium was much louder than U2 at the same venue for 360.

The crowd was younger too from what i saw - which probably makes a difference.

There was a lot more energy from the Muse crowd.

I would say that there is a lot of crowds who make more noise than U2's, certainly for stadium shows, a lot of very casual fans make up the crowds for U2's stadium shows.

You actually need equipment to measure the sound to prove which crowd is louder or not. Ones experience from one concert to another proves nothing. Your experience on what is loud could be impacted simply by who you are near, position in the venue, and also conditions inside your ear as well. Another thing is that crowds inside indoor venues will typically sound louder than in outdoor venues.

I believe bt has taken said readings on the last few tours in preparation for this debate.

But during NLOTH songs it got so quiet he thought it had malfunctioned.

What with that album being the reason people went to those shows and all.,,.

I love how every responder to the OP has qualified their posts by saying things "where I was," or "the crowd was younger" or "maybe it's the venue," yet someone still had to come in here and post that we're all incorrect and there's no way we could possibly measure the sound in an accurate way. I love you, forum people  :-*

I am obviously an old fart--I see nothing endearing about a crowd screaming at the top of their lungs.  At several U2 shows I've seen, the crowd was painfully loud.  I'd much rather experience hearing loss as a result of the music itself, rather than from 20,000 people screaming like maniacs.

Maybe, maybe not. But, with an average audience of 66,000 per show on U2's last tour, its safe to say that number of people would generate more noise than the 16,000 at a single Pearl Jam or Metallica show, which would be roughly the average per show for their last tours. The type of venue though, indoors or outdoors could make a big difference. But generally speaking, a crowd that is on average 4 or 5 times the size of these other crowds is not going to be even competitive when it comes to noise.

Don't underestimate the decibel level that a mere 500 Bieberettes can generate.

^Lies! ^^Wrong!

Your empirical observations will not suffice! You must provide hard data from sound-measuring equipment.

But seriously, maybe we should differentiate between the different kinds of crowd noises.  In my experience, a shriek is more piercing than a roar, but it often peters out quickly because who can do that for longer than 40 minutes?

Oh absolutely, the crowds are much bigger but as the crowds get a bit older, naturally they aren't screaming as loud as the young ones at shows. Loudest U2 crowd I've seen was probably Sydney 2006 but that held 80,000 or so.

Well, if that were true, it would not matter. The much higher numbers of people more than compensate for the alleged differences from age.

The Rolling Stones also probably have an older audience than U2, but you can certainly hear the crowd cheer in all the  youtube videos of their 2012 shows.

As others mentioned, venue matters, indoor vs. outdoor etc.

The Rose Bowl how was very muted compared to the anaheim shows which is about a 40,000 fewer crowd. Of course part of that was fewer nloth/obscure songs which people were never there to see to begin with.

Wasn't that show at the Rose Bowl the biggest concert ever assembled there? Confession: I don't really connect with those performances when I watch them. I think you're onto something...

Doesn't seem that way in the youtube clips as well as the DVD produced of the show. If things were that bad, U2 would have used another show from another city for the DVD.

Yes, there is less fan reaction with new songs. Same thing happened on ZOO TV with the songs from Achtung Baby.

Where are the empty sections and lines for the bathroom?

Here is another one filmed by a person in the crowd:

I've yet to see any video of empty sections(because people went to the bathroom) and lines for the bathroom on youtube for any of the 110 shows of the tour.

The crowd reaction on zoo TV was orders of magnitude louder than it was during the new  songs on 360

No it wasn't. I saw ZOO TV 4 times, met the band and listened to them practice the Outside Broadcast for a week before the first show. I saw 360 3 times. There was no difference.

Hey, you said you could hear a pin drop! Besides, since everyone knows the band starts out with new songs at the start of the show, more reason to skip the start and go in later for the stuff they came to hear, according to your little theory! LOL

Hey, its your theory just being tested. Keeping it real, just for you!

Here is another song from NLOTH where it is alleged that much of the crowd went for beer, bathroom, or sat down and were UNRESPONSIVE!

By the way, where are the half empty sections?

No Everyone does not know that.

Especially the crowds of casual fans and corporate types at the rose bowl.

And as the 360 tour showed they abandoned starting with a new song. He'll even on the DVD the opener was relegated.

No one is convinced by anything you say regarding 360.

U2 must of really FLOPPED with WAR. I mean, they opened with four songs from another album every night of the WAR tour. Then, they only ever played 6 songs from the album during the concert, one less than NLOTH.

Where are the half empty sections? How about those crickets and unresponsive fans?

Be serious.

Who's going to be filming people leaving and empty seats.

You've been told many times by many people in many threads about the impact the new songs and obscure songs like YBR had on the audiences.

I've seen U2 19 times, including 3 shows on 360. I don't need you or anyone else to tell me about the impact of these songs on the crowd. I've seen it myself.

I am serious. You and others talked about half empty sections. Find a youtube video of a half empty section. Sure, the band may not film it, but people with their little camera's would.

In any event, when the band show crowd shots of half the stadium or the entire stadium during these NLOTH songs, it looks completely full! Yes, there are bound to be some seats somewhere that are empty for whatever the reason, but that could be said for any song. The alleged occurance that you describe during these NLOTH if true, is so tiny and small, it is insignificant!

But please, show me the video. We live in an age now where everything at public events like this is filmed! So please, show us the half empty sections, beer lines and bathroom lines during NLOTH songs. Were waiting!

who in their right mind is going to film (regardless of the logistics of getting good lighting in a dark part of the stafium) empty seats ?

I've told you it happened, as have many others.

Get over it.

Deal with it.

Oh, and don't pull the "I've seen U2 XXX times" BS, that just makes you look part of the ridiculous "true fan" police.

Its not that they would specifically film it, it would simply show up in the film of other things they were filming. There are hundreds if not thousands of youtube videos filimed by fans from all different sections of the stadium. You should be able to find
some that support your points. The fact that you can't is pretty telling!

I saw U2 in 1981

I can't find a youtube clip of that show

Must not have happened

I've filmed hundreds of clips

I never once filmed an audience section

Maybe there were no audiences

Or maybe my focus was on the stage area

Who'da thought to point the camera at the STAGE ?

In other news, I think JTBaby and I are neighbors you guys!

Also, I don't care if nobody else cheers or if everybody else cheers. If I like the song, I'm going to enjoy a live performance.

Easy to say. I thought I would be the same way. Then the tepid crowd response to Your Blue Room in Toronto was like a punch to the balls in the middle of sex. It ruined the whole performance for me.

Yeah?  :( I don't have that problem. As long as my viewing or hearing experience is not being physically obstructed, I can enjoy the moment with or without the crowd.

Hey, its youtube and were talking 2009-2011. There hundreds if not thousands of clips from nearly angle of every stadium on the tour. I've not seen the half empty sections or empty sections caused by songs from NLOTH. If this was so common, you should be able to point out at least few clips of this occurance that you talk of so much.

I saw three shows myself on 360, and I did not see anything happen that did not happen on other U2 tours as far as crowd response and crowd behavior.

No one has ever left any show any ever even if just to get nachos or a beer or take a leak.

It's not on YouTube.

I'm looking for the MASS exodus producing half empty or entirely empty sections. Thats not a tall order. You can tell a section in a stadium is half empty from over hundred yards away. From all the youtube clips I have seen, the stadium looks full everywhere you look. Thats not to say people don't get nachos, beer, or take a break, but that happens during ANY SONG, any show, on every tour, by every artist out there.

No, I'm looking for those half empty sections, the mass exodus during NLOTH songs. Not just someone going to the bathroom. By the way, there are youtube clips of people clapping, dancing to songs during the concert so even though its dark, you can still see that, plus the bands lighting lights up multiple sections of the stadium at times and even the entire stadium at others. Pretty easy to see all those alleged half empty sections due to NLOTH songs.

To answer the OP's question....I think this concert footage of Van Halen circa 1982 at the 19:25 mark put us U2 audiences to shame for generations:

I assure you, the 84,750 people at the 360 Washington DC show in 2009 would crush the tiny Van Halen crowd of 15,000 at the Captital Center near Washington DC in 1982 in terms of total volume. By the way, the 360 show at FEDEX Field near Washington DC was the largest attended concert, or show ever in the Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland/Delaware area in history!

Today Van Halen can't even sellout an arena in the area, regardless if its Sammy or David singing. So much for nostalgia.

Charge on Don.

The lighting that the band has during every song insures that you will see every part of the stadium lit up at some point during the songs, which would easily allow you to see if this mass exodus is happening during NLOTH songs. Plus, its not that anyone would be directly filming it, but it would show up in the clip regardless given the distance from the stage and the angle of the view.

I didn't see any half empty sections or mass exodus from the stadium during NLOTH songs at the 3 shows I was at, and I have yet to come across any youtube videos that would show that.

Thats still a true statement. Put the two groups in the same environment and there is no contest!

What you talking about is indoor vs outdoor shows, not who has the loudest crowd.

Yes 90000 people yelling is louder than 15000 yelling if in the same venue.

Was that really your point ?

Bethere, you seriously think anyone is gonna check out every YouTube clip of 360 for random audience shots to see how many people left their seats? How much free time do you got on your hands?

People got family's, jobs, lives to live. I would rather spend free time with my wife and kid or my friends then go through 360 clips looking for how many people left to take a pi*s during Unknown Caller (the ultimate pi*s break song).

Another thread Bethere's completely taken off the rails.

Agree! Especially about Maiden, their shows are full of loud maniacal headbangers!

I've only seen Coldplay, Sara Bareilles (2x, soon to be 3x in two weeks!), Maroon 5 and Chris Webby (2x) in concert, so I really haven't been fully immersed with other bands and their crowds.  But to answer the question, no.  I was in the pit at the Philly U2360 concert and that was the loudest few hours of my life.

For me, no.  Probably because of the decade that I attended other rock concerts.

I loved the energy of the crowd at U2.  Everyone had a good time, including me.   My husband and I, are middle aged.  And it was the time of our lives.  We sang and cheered right along with everyone else.

I've seen a few concerts in my days, but U2 was the best.
