Title: I Can't Believe the News Today
Post by: The Exile on August 21, 2013, 12:09:15 AM
I would like to point out, even amid my own frustration, that none of what has been reported lately rises to the level of actually credible news. The Italian fansite appealed to a supposed insider at the record company, and then insisted that this anonymously-generated rumor reinforces what the French website said about the new album dropping in March of next year. But as I pointed out yesterday (and was the first to do it), nothing in the French article even mentioned the album coming out in 2014. So the fact that this Italian site appealed to the prior article as a source tells me that they don't read French any better than the people at @U2 who posted the French article with the misinformation in it about the album's delay.

I'm not convinced that the album's coming out this year, but the more I think about it, the less that lack of conviction has to do with anything that has been "reported" over the last 48 hours. We need some critical thinking and fact-checking up in here, is what I'm saying. It's irresponsible to just cut-and-paste articles written in languages we don't speak, which themselves consist of unsubstantiated hearsay.

Relax. Walk out into the street and Breathe. Don't [fret], don't talk out of time. Don't think, don't worry. Everything's just fine.

That French article translation was definitely misguided. If anything, it argued for a close release.

But I agree. There is a time for keeping our distance, there is a time to turn our eyes away [from bad press releases], there is a time to get on with our day.

Totally lazy and irresponsible reporting by a so called reputable website, should spend more time upgrading the site ,then throwing out hearsay and so called empty sources, what's next an interview with bono's cleaner?

Yeah, well said Exile. The reason we are all getting so frustrated is because we're all way past when we expected to hear proper, official, and big news. So we are susceptible even to the indistinct whispers circulating at the moment. U2 should just say something. They said they'd be finishing the album by the end of Summer. Well that's 10 days away and there's not a peep. Initially, August was even suggested as a potential *release* time, if I remember correctly, and credibly so. IF the album is not released this year, U2 will have made a big mistake. Bono thinks they're in a dream. They're not in a dream. The music industry and the world is wide awake and changing. If they are in a dream, they're sleepwalking and hammering nails into their own coffin. Because to be out of any sort of media for so long is to be signing the application form for irrelevancy.

I also question the (albeit very mild) professional/ethical failure of promising an album release virtually every 6 months for five years running. Talk about stringing out people who support you.

the french article actually confirms that the album will be out before the end of the year

I've a funny feeling that M2 may have his own view on his thread but here's my tuppenceworth. This is a fan site aiming to bring information as and when it arises. The fact that different rumours are being posted that indeed contradict each other is because...they are rumours. The opposite position is to not report and I suspect you would all be questioning about why @U2 isn't picking up the rumours in a timely manner. Likewise when questions were raised about content they were checked and amended on the front page.

I guess if the site isn't doing what you think it should go look elsewhere?

Executioner - to say you have a cheek is a bit of an understatement....

Exile,

Way to integrate some lyrics.

U2 fans just have to learn to be patient. Lets not forget something about time, its not linear. Then the album will be out early next year.

Hehehe. It's rich that this thread comes from The Exile and that Executioner jumped in so quickly to agree. Funny.

Anyhoo, I obviously can't speak for the Italian site and their sources. (But if memory serves, the European Universal Music reps were correct when they leaked album details before Bomb and/or No Line.) We've contacted our sources, but it's unlikely we'll get a reply with anything newsworthy. People tend to not want to talk to us because the site is noticeable and read by major music media outlets, and things we report get spread.

Speaking for @U2's posts, the online translation that I read of the original French article was not clear what the March 2014 was referring to -- album or tour. If I misread the translation, that's my mistake and I take responsibility. It was not clear as I read it.

I'm sorry if this has ruined your day or your life. And I note the irony in the situation here, where the person who has started a new thread about "shoddy reporting and dubious sources" on a fan site is then telling others to "relax" and "breathe."

As I said, very rich, The Exile. Very rich.

As I've said before, if you're not happy with @U2, we're always willing to refund the money that you've paid for access to the site. You might be happier with the reporting on U2.com, where things are definitely very relaxed.

Geez, oversensitive much?!

My main complaint was that the Italian site sourced the French article, despite the latter not saying what is was reported to have said, and then using it to reinforce more anonymous hearsay.

Should you have picked up on the fact that the French article did not say what you reported it to have said? Yes. But thankfully, I read it and "humbly suggested" that the mods amend what the homepage said. You're welcome for catching that, by the way.

And I kind of don't appreciate being treated like I'm some troll here. When I comment (which is rare compared to many forum members), it's usually either humorous remarks or remarks about U2's music, and when I start topics, they're almost always substantive and well thought-out.

Or perhaps what you're really upset about is the fact that a month or so ago I elected to use the "Report to Moderator" function several times when a certain (banned and now renamed) forum member would highjack threads by pasting pages of tour stats? If clicking that button or pointing out errors on the homepage makes one lose legitimacy with you, then I would suggest you (A) remove the button, and (B) not rely on Google translations of foreign texts.

But I am done with this, at least here. If you'd like to continue offline, please feel free to message me. But I am fine just letting the matter drop.

If you read my original post and then my response to Matt, you'll see that the object of my criticism was the Italian article and its French source. Unless Matt authored those, he has no reason to feel insulted by what I have said here. My only criticism of @U2 was that you reported false information yesterday. I pointed that out for you, and it was amended.

What's the problem?

Update - I changed the title of the thread to avoid causing any further offense.

Frustration is kicking in among the faithful, all turning on each other, even the higher powers within the site are getting involved, throwing their orr in,again my mate is deep in the trenches with the band ,and no delay is expected ,it will be this year as predicted, but lets not get carried away by nailing down an exact day, suffice to say, "it won't be long now, hold on"

I think people need to get outside and enjoy the bloody summer, go to the beach, play some ball, drink some beer, look at girls in bikinis,... buy 2 new suits, pink and blue, get hot in a photo booth.... whatever puts a smile on your face

The U2 album will be released when it's released and nothing anyone says on here will change that.

Lets just get some fresh air and wait for a little longer.

Sounds like everyone is over sensitive here. And where is everyones sense of humor.

Ofcoarse we all want an album now. But we wanted one last year, the year before, and the year before. At this point and extra few months wont kill anyone.

I posted months ago that I heard from a source (which I really cant name) that is is most likely to be early next year, and people went mad at me.

U2 only finished 360 a couple of years back. Released a documentary film after that. Achtung Baby had a pretty big rerelease. Bono has had a degree of bad press of late. So it stands to reason they just want to shut up a bit and give the general public some appetite for U2.

I can understand their reasoning in holding back.

Alas releasing great new music often has not been the bands priority for a long time.

But everyone...take a chill...I thought I was a nutty U2 fan.

Something is afoot, or we wouldn't have all this information/misinformation whirring about.

I wasn't on this forum for the other album releases, but I would guess it was a similar atmosphere surrounding the previous releases?

Can I make an observation?

People on the eastern side of the Atlantic (esp Italy, Spain, Ireland and the UK) love rumour and aren't afraid of letting the facts get in the way of a good story. Gossip is common.

People on western side of the world are much more literal in their communication. When the internet bridges this gap, confusion arises.

For me, as someone that only joined up here in the last few months that seem to have led to the latest blitz on this album, I've mostly been very happy that U2's finally started playing it so close to the vest and they haven't been telling everyone how great the new album is (or anything else). But I do get the frustration with the delays thus far. I wanted/believed Songs of Ascent would be out the same year No the next year Aw, man the year after that CRAP!

And hoping that isn't happening again. I don't think it is. Somehow, I'm still cautiously optimistic it'll come out this year. But even if it doesn't, I'll keep waiting. Playing the old albums, and stuff by other artists I like.

I'm not convinced that the album's coming out this year, but the more I think about it, the less that lack of conviction has to do with anything that has been "reported" over the last 48 hours.

Yes, this. I am increasingly sceptical, but these "revelations" don't really affect my view one way or the other.

People are really stressing too much about this topic that Exile started. I've been a member here for years (although I don't post that much) and, as far as I'm concerned, Exile is one of the most eloquent and sensible forum members there is here. Separately, Matt and his team do a superb job of running this website.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Exile saying he doesn't believe the French / Italian rumours, whatever, but Matt is also correct that one of the great things this site does is publish rumours and things we may want to hear about U2. I've also been a paid-up member of U2.Com since 2004 and I hardly ever look at that site for news - because they only publish official news, of which there obviously isn't much at the moment.

Exile and Matt are both right in what they've said in this thread, their opinions just differ - but if we all had the same opinion about the various U2 topics there would be no need for forums would there?

I, for one, am glad that the band are keeping this album more under wraps than previously - it's more exciting than previous releases. We should also all remember that U2 don't owe us anything - let alone another album - and we should just be glad that they are still together. Imagine how boring life would be (and it happen one day) when they've split up and we know that there will never be a new album or tour ever again - what will we talk about then?

And yes, U2.com...nothing but Zooropa anniversary stuff for the last 2 months!

I seriously hope they do officially announce the new album/single there after keeping it so tightly wrapped on the rest of the internet. Imagine if we hear the first 30 second clip, actually on U2.com?!?!

I feel a certain dictatorship wave hanging on the air. Do you really think that this war environment is needed? While you all are here eating each other, Bono is hanging out with his friends in Monaco not giving a f#%$* damn for this  8)

I can read a bit of French and there is nothing in this article that suggests that the album won't be released this year.

For any late participants to the topic and who may be wondering what's going on - the thread title (which I think provoked the responses) has subsequently changed and likewise I think it's been moved on from.

Even funnier that you dismiss someone's opinion by posting a sarcastic reply. It's not really an acceptable 'catch all' response just because someone has the temerity to disagree with a 'moderator'. If Exiles response had been posted to anyone else it wouldn't have been an issue. If you have a problem with hosting a free site then perhaps you should flag that in your terms and conditions.

I refer again to the above. For those late posters Exile changed the thread title (by his own free will) so the context of the discussion is not as clear now.

It wasn't a disagreement but a point of view on the quality of reporting and m2 took the opportunity to respond.

I may be wrong (?) but it happens all over the place here so why the sudden indignation from posters who do it all the time?

Exile was pretty clear (and reasonable) in his responses. You can't have it both ways - either it's a democratic forum or there's one rule for posters and another for moderators.

So with respect you are wrong.

That said - to clarify - it happens in certain threads and discussions and not right across the entire forum.

Exile is an intelligent poster and his initial post on this thread  was fair and reasonable. That being said, M2's response was fair and reasonable as well. Exile called for fact checking and was critical of the article being posted, and Matt basically told him and I'm paraphrasing here : "Hey this is a free site. If it bothers you that much then go elsewhere". Both fair and reasonable posts.

This is by far the best U2 site on the web and it's free. I think the @u2 staff does a great job providing a free service and many of us, myself included at times, do a lot of bitching and moaning for something that we don't pay for. I can certainly understand M2's frustration when some members are critical of a 100% free site, and a very good one at that.

Thx for the kind words, zootv et al.

As singnomore has pointed out, the title of this thread has changed (twice, right?) and so late-comers are missing out on some important context specific to this thread. Then there's also other forum context from the past that no one needs to know about, but that obviously plays into how conversations develop today. While some of you continue to bring this up, the rest of us have moved on. Recommend you do the same.

I'd like to respond to this comment:

You can't have it both ways - either it's a democratic forum or there's one rule for posters and another for moderators.

Wonka, let me be clear about this:

This forum is a private community. This is not, never was, and never will be a democracy. No one who joins the forum gets to vote on who the owner is, who the moderators are, what the rules are, etc. When you join the forum, you're presented with the forum rules that we've chosen to live by as a community. You can either agree to live by them, too, and continue to use the forum ... or you can disagree and stop using the forum. But you don't get to vote.

Is there one set of rules for mods and another for users? If you want to get technical about it, sure. I own the site. I can be a complete ar*****e in here as much as I want and no one can stop me. Sorry, but that's how it is.

Of course, if I actually behaved that way, or if the moderators behaved that way, forum membership and activity would dwindle to nothing and the community would die. The opposite is what's happening. And because we've seen a surge in new members and posts in the last couple months -- and because that's only going to continue as U2 gets more active with its album and tour -- the mods (and I) are being more pro-active about making sure this forum offers the kind of welcoming environment that new users deserve.

We've reached our limit of allowable snark and general crap from the 1% of users that think they own this place, think the rules don't apply to them, or assume we'll keep giving them multiple chances because they're a "celebrity" forum member (gag). We've also reached the limit of having members constantly tell us how we should be running things. (http://forum.atu2.com/index.php/topic,21756.0.html) The vast majority (i.e., 99%) of our members over the years have managed to enjoy the community we've built here and participate productively within the rules as they're written. This is a GREAT place to visit when the 1% aren't dragging it down for everyone else. After we get our new mods on board, we'll be rewriting the forum rules to reflect this. The vast majority of forum members won't be affected by that.

I think we're extremely fair and patient with everyone when it comes to how we moderate -- i.e., enforcing rules, giving second (and third and fourth) chances, and so forth. Mods from other forums have told us that we're too nice and too inclusive, and maybe there's some truth in that. As always, anyone who doesn't like the rules or how we moderate is welcome to find another U2 fan forum to use.

Now let's see if we can get this back on topic...

Either way I felt your response to Exiles post was unnecessary. As others have pointed out the moderation here is usually pretty reasonable and fair. Your post wasn't (in my opinion). Having that opinion is not breaking the forum rules. Unless there's a caveat about disagreeing with a moderator - in which case there officially is one rule for posters and another for moderators.

The original post has not been changed at all. I changed the title from something having to do with "shoddy reporting" to what it is now. The reason I changed it is that, despite the original post being perfectly clear, some people took offense (as though my point were to criticize @U2, rather than the Italian site citing the French article about the album being delayed until next March [which it does not say]). My only criticism of @U2 had to do with the homepage reporting something the French article never said. To @U2's credit, they amended the homepage accordingly.

Despite being a bit annoyed at the way M2 treated me in his reply, I said that I am fine letting the matter drop, and that if there was anything further that he wanted to discuss, he could message me privately (which he has not done, which I take to mean it's all good in the hood).

I think that this is a great site. People that can't handle a little back and forth will never be okay with anything. I hate being wrong just as much as anyone else but if it does happen, I'm more than okay with admitting it and moving on.

I've been a member of this site for years and have never considered leaving it. There are so many more positives on this site (U2Ken, Exile, TumblingDice, Starman, Jick) than negatives (senseless personal attacks and meme/gif posting).

"Let Me In The Sound, Let Me In The Sound"

I can't wait for a new album so we can argue about that :) all part of the journey of being a U2 Fan.
