Title: Lucifer's Hands Appreciation Thread.
Post by: an tha on October 08, 2014, 04:53:29 PM
It is boss, utterly boss.

First minute or so of it was a proper WTF moment ala hearing the opening bars of AB with Zoo Station.

Swagger, attitude, the sound of a band on fire.

This folks is the U2 this fan has missed, it is like they have awoke from a slumber, playing it safe is gone... this is the U2 That gave us Zooropa and Pop. If this is the future I am all in.

Quote for truth!

The two new songs are even better than the real thing!

It's really amazing how the boys transformed vague ideas like EBW and Stingray Guitar into such great songs like Lucifer's Hands in SOI. Gives me hope to see an even better North Star in SOE.

Couldn't have said it any better myself an tha, its utterly brilliant. The Crystal Ballroom is also fabulous, and these two songs should have been on SOI. I hope SOE is full of songs like this.

Where oh where has this band been? It's like they awoke from a 17 year slumber.

They didn't put a foot wrong with SOI. One of their most consistent albums.

I'd like to read the lyrics, not everything is clear, but there are some cool lines. The chorus has weird lines.

I dig it! Though I do miss the psyechedlic keyboard pops of the live version of Stingray.

This is U2 sound I love.

They can do another AB (with their actual limitations) if they want..... Luciferīs hands is the proof (and thatīs why this is my favorite song in years).

Absolutely. You won't be disappointed.

I have seen them on numerous occasions and never walked away disappointed.

Quite sure some of our members saw them on their recent US tour and there is some discussion about those shows in the general music section, including how Mac seems to have been talking a lot more and acting somewhat Bono like....of all things.

If you can, go see them!

The bunnymen are on my hit list. Almost went to see them in NY when they did the ocean rain tour a few years ago but had a wedding that weekend.

Anyway... Lucifers hands is just a good as anything on SOI. You could probably drop it on to Achtung Baby and it would fit right in. And that's a very good thing.. Takes a very cool stingray and makes it even better. Well freaking done.

Wow, I gotta say that this song rocks. This and The Crystal Ballroom (12" version) would have made SOI an instant classic album for me on the SAME level as AB and TJT. As it sits now SOI is just below the overall level of TJT and AB (4.5 stars vs 5 stars).

Great song!

I'm getting serious deja vu listening to the song, especially the main riff and the little bridge leading into the verses. Does anyone know if they've heard this elsewhere? Especially in a HTDAAB or No Line bootleg? I feel like I've heard the guitar bit, and recently..

Drake: it's basically Stingray Guitar.

I'm not a huge fan of that riff but the song is pretty good overall and yeah, it's probably their most consistently good album.

Not quite sure why this one and Crystal Ballroom didn't make the album cut, but they're both great in my book. This one deflates a little near the end, but then so did Stingray live, I think.

I'm very disappointed with this song to be honest. I feel as if it starts out at one pace and maintains it throughout, never really going anywhere exciting at all.

I hate the fact that the killer live track called Return Of The Stingray Guitar turned into this.

The lyrics are fairly good but the song sounds way too overproduced. Edge's riff doesn't hit you like it should (in the way that The Miracle's riff does) and everything sounds a bit too turned down on the volume side.

Where's the rock and roll?? It's missing Adam's pounding bass and Larry's driving drums.

Also, the bridge is awful. It just goes nowhere and it drags the song out more than is necessary. Such a disappointment.

My first reaction was similar to an tha's. It's an amazing song that would have fit well either just after "Volcano" (my preference) or just before TIWYCRMN. I'm even partial to the idea of it as an album opener for a truly jarring effect, but post-"Volcano" still is best.

I love TCB almost as much and would have placed it just after "The Miracle." Had both songs been on SOI, I might have evaluated the album as a classic. In fact, I think disc 2 of the special edition surpasses SOI artistically. Some meld of both discs would have been killer.

I really dig LH but I prefer TCB. Both very solid songs and I wish both would have been on the original release...Maybe drop This is Where You Can...
And for those of you complaining why both or one of these songs (Crystal Ballroom and LH) wasn't on the original release, it's because U2 are geniuses. Do you really think if the Deluxe version only had the acoustic songs, people would buy it? I am a huge U2 fan, but I wouldn't buy the Deluxe version without the 2 new bonus tracks.
The only reason why I bought it was so I can hear the 2 new tracks and support my favorite band. Also, having Invisible as the hidden track is another clever move by the band.
Anyway, no need to doubt our boys from Ireland. They have shown that they are not only business-savvy but can only still produce incredible music.

It does need a wee bit more in the musical interlude section for it to have been on the initial release. But, wouldn't that have been grand?! Although, as it is we got two Christmas mornings in a very short period of time! It's all good!  8)

I see what you're saying...I am just of the opinion that "Volcano" is a really boring song while "Lucifer's Hands" is a good song, so I wish they had used "Lucifer's Hands" on "Disc 1" and made "Volcano" a bonus track.

Well, I think LH and TCB beat all of SOI's songs, so I understand where you're coming from. Be that as it may, it seems to me that SOI's greatest strength is in its honest, at times gut-wrenching emotionalism. "Volcano" has that in spades, so even while it'll probably never be a classic U2 song to me, it fits well on SOI.

They should have left the Stingray keys on it somewhere.

You mean those series of three ascending notes with a tone that sounds like a Duracell commercial? They have them in the end of the second verse and right before every chorus. I'm kind of torn about it because I think having that part in there really adds to the song musically (it sounds really cool!) but it also is harder to focus on the lyrics in the small part where they do have it...so maybe they thought it sounded too cluttered to keep the part through the entirety of the verses.

They could have let the intro be just a little bit longer and had the " Duracell" sounds before Bono starts to sing .

They could have let the intro be just a little bit longer and had the " Duracell" sounds before Bono starts to sing .

I agree. I would have liked that.

For me it's just an OK song, I think U2 did well in leaving it off the main album.

This song really should be the next single. If not this one, then The Crystal Ballroom or This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now.

Sigh...  :-*

After many many listens at high volume I still think that this song was definitely worthy of inclusion, if not in SOI then surely SOE. It needs a bit of work to be sure. The bridge is a bit of a mess and kills the momentum completely and the 'duracsll' sound needs to be heard more often and louder!

I enjoy listening to it more than Miracle that's for sure.

I'd vote for 'This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now', IMO the best of the 3 songs and one of the highlights on SOI. It wouldn't feel right to release any of the other 2 songs since after all they are only bonus tracks.

TIWYCRMN was always my favorite, but Lucifer's Hands is an excellent blend of the vibes of TCB and Soldier Soldier.

I don't care if they were bonus tracks or not. They rock!  8)
