Title: 2015 Setlist: What staples would you like to see shelved for I+E?
Post by: octoberreckoning on January 27, 2015, 05:28:18 PM
Plenty of standards & hits to satisfy the causal fan.
What regular songs need a rest to make room for more?

1. Sunday Bl÷ody Sunday - doubt it
2. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
3. With Or Without You
4. Mysterious Ways
5. In A Little While
6. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
(7. Get On Your Boots - buh bye, please)

Definitely Sunday bloody sunday. Tired of hearing vertigo. Maybe its time to retire walk on?

Heresy maybe, but I'd add Beautiful Day and COBL to that list. Great songs but played heavily the last 3 tours (2 in the case of COBL).

Stuck In A Moment and In A Little While, time for them to have a rest unless they are performed in a different way then what has been done before.

Sunday Bloody Sunday. Had enough of it.
Mysterious Ways. Same.
Beautiful Day. There better songs.
All I Want Is You. Not too good live imo.

Beautiful Day - Boring, boring, boring, plus Bono sings it horribly generally, time to rest it
SBS - tired and just not essential anymore
WOWY - If Bono can be Ar**d to sing it then ok, but as he generally can't then jib it
Pride - Tired, and way behind Bonos vocal reach.
ISHFWILF - Dull as they come, time to leave it.
Elevation - Please, no more.
COBL - Horrible live (not a fave of mine on record either)
Vertigo - Please, no more.

***********CONTROVERSY ALERT**************

Streets - Yes I know this is heresy to most, but it has been played on every tour since it came out and the 360 version was the sound of a band tired of it, bored with it and going through the motions. It bombed at Glastonbury, Muse played it with more energy, passion and verve, nicely assisted by Edge who seemed to enjoy playing it with them more than he did with U2 at Glastonbury. I honestly could live without hearing it, its been done to death.....

Also wouldn't care less if the acoustic versions of Stay, Desire and SIAMYCGOO are not reprised, they are dull and lifeless - full band Stay would be most welcome instead......

I will be happy if all these be shelved- SBS, NYD, Pride, ISHF, WOWY, MY, One, Stay, Stuck, Elevation.  All these have been played to death over the years and no longer has an impact for me anyway.  The band themselves seem to be bored playing these too.  Shelving these songs should make ample room for welcome new additions to the set that haven not been played for several tours.  I would say also shelve BD and Vertigo, COBL, but then I would be pushing my luck!

Until The End Of The World (Five tours. Enough already)
With Or Without You (it's time)
SBS (can come back someday; needs another break)
Stuck (love it; just needs a break)
Elevation (doesn't need to be there with Vertigo, and Vertigo is better, IMO)
Walk On (really lost its punch since Elevation)
I Will Follow (anything else from Boy, please)
Bullet The Blue Sky (it needs to STAY DOWN)

Since they are looking at 2 different set lists, or at least vastly different from night 1 to 2, does that change things?

Let's assume 23 songs per show...and maybe 13 songs will be played every night.  We will say 6 songs from the current album (assuming a new album is not released), and 7 more standards (like WOWY, One, Streets, MW, Pride, SBS or BD)

Over a two night period, that could be 20 more songs outside of the album and these standards. That is a lot to choose from.  I think we need to start thinking of the set lists in terms of a two night event, since that is how the tour is being positioned.

It depends on the narrative they are aiming for.  The Elevation and Vertigo tours thrived on the joyous innocence+Fracture+Turmoil+Redemption thread. The 360 tour tried to abandon that and instead came up with some Mr. Roboto meets Jesus meets Space Jam bullshee until it was rebranded as an Achtung Baby tribute show.  I think the downfall of this album will repeat the familiar thread.  But on a positive, this album has a lot more good stuff to fill in the holes where the previous two albums failed to.

Agreed except I really love Until the End of the World. On the Boy thing, I really want to here Eletric co. become a regular. WOWY could stay if Bono would put more heart into the song, I think he doesn't like it anymore. I'd love to see Running to Stand Still or Red Hill Mining Town(please) take its place or I Still haven't found's place as a regular Joshua Tree song. Also it seems like a lot of people want Streets out. I'd definitely disagree. That song is soooo good live. I'd hate to see it go.

I vote "Pride".  At the very least turf it on one of the nights.  Not to take away from it's greatness or importance but it's suffered from decades of overexposure and to me it's not one of the needs to played at every show songs like "Streets" or "One" are.

I doubt it'll happen though.

I've never been much of a fan of Sunday Bloody Sunday.  The acoustic intro softer version they used to do (e.g. Self Aid 1986) worked better for me.  Streets is one that gets the crowd going each and every time I've seen them so I just don't think it'd be right for them to ditch it for the sake of a few hardcore fans who'd rather hear, say, Drowning Man.

If they are alternating set lists nightly, the song selection potential is incredible. Playing Pride, SBS, Beautiful Day, Vertigo every night is a bit much. But, playing them every two or three shows could make them special again.

I think playing Vertigo one night and then City of Blinding Lights the next would be great. But, both songs every night could be a bit of a drag for me. Since many people are going to multiple shows in each city, changing up the set would make it exciting for everyone.- including the band. Surely they have enough songs in their portfolio. The changing set lists nightly is very exciting!

They are going to play Beautiful Day and Vertigo every single show. Removing City of Blinding Lights would be like removing streets....they won't do that. You can pretty much count on hearing/seeing those 4 songs every single show. If they don't play any of those 4 I would be completely shocked.

If they got rid of these, the show will be infinitely better no matter what.  Bono could duet with Avril Lavigne on Get on Yer Boots and it would still be f'ing awesome.

These songs seem to be getting a little redundant...
1. Pride
2. Stuck in A Moment
3. Walk On
4. Bullet the Blue Sky
5. In A Little While
I always love hearing Streets, Bad, and WOWY, even when Bono's voice isn't as strong.
Just once I would like to hear One Tree Hill in it's entirety. Or A Sort of Homecoming.

I think they should make EVERY song droppable. In my view, sure, play ISHFWILF... just not *every* night. The only 'old' songs I'd consider they should play every night are "One" and "Beautiful Day". I wrote out a 6 night setlist and it's entirely possible to open every one of those nights with a different song. Songs they should drop? Honestly, kick "Bullet The Blue Sky" out, forever. Take "Stuck", "Walk On", "Boots", "Pride", "Sunday", "Follow", "ISHFWILF" and make them once-in-a-blue-moon songs.

Songs that should come back and be played more often : A Sort Of Homecoming, Bad, A Day Without Me, Gloria, October, Seconds, In Gods Country, Hawkmoon, God Part II, Lemon, Numb, Please.

ISHFWILF should become the new Bad. Rarely played but with impact when played.

Drop One, IWF, Elevation, Vertigo.

I WILL FOLLOW- A THOUSAND TIMES THIS SONG!!!  I always get it at my shows!
Sunday bloody sunday
Pride
ISHFWILF
WOWY
Desire
Mysterious Ways
Beautiful Day
Elevation
Stuck in a moment
Vertigo

I'd even take Get on your boots in place of Vertigo / Elevation if I had the choice.

I tell you what, I will be a little disappointed if I don't hear Streets, One, Beautiful Day, Vertigo, ISHFWILF, WOWY, etc. at my first U2 concert this summer. I'll still have a glorious time but I expect to hear certain songs at a U2 concert.

"Shelved" implies that such songs shouldn't be performed at all on the upcoming tour. To that, I would say that none of their live staples should be benched for the whole tour, but none of them should be played every night, either.

It would be cool if they took those dozen or so staples and established a rotation for them, so that each night they could play a different half-dozen of them (or less - 4 or 5 would be cool with me).

I'm taking my daughter to her first concert when we go to one of the London dates. I've seen U2 previously a few times so aren't too fussed but she'd be heartbroken if at least some of the greatest hits aren't aired. Especially as I 've told her how amazing an experience a U2 concert is. For me though everything bar Streets is fair game.

I think both of these are very likely to go. If they truly are going to play different sets, M-Ways may be in a 'hits' rotation, but I doubt it is an every-nighter. And while on one hand I can see SBS fitting in with songs from SOI, there are better early-album choices that have been played far less in recent years.

And as I have said before, just from a pure volume standpoint, UTEOTW is a song that rocks hard live, but has been played so much since 1992 that it really could use a break, exactly like BTBS got on 360. They easily could sub in Dirty Day or another song from A-Baby instead in that slot.

If they stick to their guns, we may see several songs from this list played at each show:

I Will Follow
SBS
NYD
Pride
WOWY
Still Haven't Found
Desire
One
M-Ways
Real Thing
Walk On
Vertigo
City of Blinding Lights

But not ALL of them. In a stadium setting, I can see the pressure to play all but one or two of these. For this album and this format, I think they might play 3 or so of these each night, while Streets remains as the only every-night must-play. It has become their Born To Run, IMO. Other songs can come and go, but I think Streets and to a lesser degree Beautiful Day pretty-much have to stay. One may also be on that list, but I could live without it at this point.
Title: Re: 2015 Setlist: What staples would you like to see shelved for I+E?

SOngs should be divided into four categories

A: EVERY NIGHT

B : MOST NIGHTS

C: SOME NIGHTS

D: NEXT TO NEVER

A would include Beautiful Day, Vertigo, One, Streets, and most of SOI - 10 songs every night.
B would include mostly singles, lets say they play 6 songs on any given night out of a pool of 15 or so.
C would be the 'deep cuts'; LP tracks, and odd single - lets say 6 songs on any given night out of a pool of 20 or so.
D everything else, and lets say at most 2 on any given night, probably 1.

Of course, where the songs sit in the setlist, etc. is all up for grabs. It does get predictable when you get to say, "Blinding Lights" and you know the only surprise is the next hour is if you get "Bad".

Here is my wish list by albums for songs that should be shelved (at least for me):

Boy - I Will Follow (any other song is welcomed)
Ocober - Any song is welcomed
War - SBS, NYD have been played to death (any other song is welcomed)
UF - Pride, again played to death (any other song welcomed)
JT - ISHFWILF, WOWY, absolutely tired of them (any other song welcomed)
R&H - Desire, AOH, if played acoustic.  Would mind hearing them full band again and any other song of the album is welcomed.
AB - Mysterious Ways and One again beaten to death over the years.
        Any other songs are welcomed.
Zooropa - Any song is okay with me but probably won't play any songs off the album
Pop - Any song is okay with me except Staring at the Sun acoustic (full band I don't mind) but again don't see them playing anything off it.
ATYCLB - Elevation, Walk On, Stuck (can live without BD)
HTDAAB - COBL (can live without Vertigo)
NLOTH - don't see them playin any songs off this album but actually don't mind if they do.
SOI - PLAY THE WHOLE ALBUM!!

It would be cool if they opened the show with The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone). I'll be at the San Jose show on May 18 at SAP arena which is one of the very first shows of the tour, the first night in the states after the Vancouver Canada dates. I hope there's gonna be some surprises, but it's always a huge event every time I've seen them - and they never disappoint, at least when I've seen them. If it goes for 2 hours, that's about 22 or so songs, they're gonna have to fill it with all those staple hits, but hopefully they can replace some with others that are great songs which they haven't played in the last few tours.
We'll see what happens! I can't wait!

I'm going to borrow boom boom's album breakdown:

Boy - I Will Follow... maybe make it a snippet? I'd love to hear A Day Without Me though
October - So underplayed, nothing from here
War - I hate to say NYD or SBS, but one or the other
UF - Pride, definitely
JT - Maybe alternate out ISHFWILF and WOWY... definitely let BTBS take a break for a tour
R&H - Desire
AB - One
Zooropa - Nothing
Pop - Nothing
ATYCLB - Elevation, Beautiful Day
HTDAAB - COBL
NLOTH - Boots, MoS
SOI - Nothing

personally, i'd take the following out

Mysterious ways ( I think I've had this at every U2 concert since AB was released)
Elevation
Walk on
Stuck in a moment
Boots
One (but never going to happen)

I'd love to hear

Zooropa
Out of control (never at any U2 concert i've attended)
So Cruel
Please (stunning song vastly underrated)
Gone
With or without you (with stars snippet) - greatest song ever
Sometimes you can make it on your own
Indian summer sky
Wire

Dare I say it but i'd love a rework of Bullet the blue sky as well, thankfully rested for the 360 tour, but would like to see it reworked and live again,

If they barely played Indian Summer Sky on TUF tour I think they chances of their resurrecting it in 2015 are miniscule.  I agree it'd be great if Please reappeared but have had my full of Bullet the Blue Sky.

I'd be fine hearing just about any song. Considering this will only be my second and third live U2 experiences, I'd still love to see ANY of the classics live.
That said, I'd love to hear Out of Control or Electric Co over I Will Follow.
ISHFWILF is my favorite song of all time. I could hear it every day (and almost do) so they can play that as many times as they'd like (and I'd be bummed if they didn't play it at least ONE of the nights).
SBS and Pride are also tired, but I'd still be welcome to seeing them (or maybe a reimagining of either).
I agree with the general consensus that none of these songs should be shelved over the entirety of the tour, but maybe played less often. I'm looking forward to seeing what gets played over the course of the two nights.
Really nothing can dampen my excitement for this tour (except maybe Get On Your Boots... it still pains me that the phrases "sexy boots" and "bossy boots" made it in to a U2 song, a single even).

For me, I would at this stage, rather hear Boots live than yet again hear them belt out SBS, Pride, WOWY, ISHF, songs just beaten to death over the years.  They need to put these to rest for some time and maybe bring them back on their farewell/retirement tour whenever that is.

I actually somewhat agree with this... I think U2 needs to rediscover the joy in Streets.  It needs a proper buildup and transition for one - Streets should be the highlight of any U2 show; a blissful catharsis, a breakthrough moment after the darkness... U2 needs to go back and watch RTSS-->Streets, Please-->Streets, and Bad/40-->Streets and remember how to make that song truly transcend.  and as far as I'm concerned it's the first post-rock song and ought to be 10 minutes long.  they need to think of it as an experience, not just a staple or hit they are obligated to play.  but they can't not play it; that song live is the epitome of U2.  it's the only song I feel like they 100% cannot drop ever

I am surprised so many people said SBS.  I never get tired of that song personally; I can see it being used with footage from ISIS or something this tour.  plus it fits thematically with Raised By Wolves.  would actually love a whole political section of Raised/SBS/Bullet/Please...

Pride needs to go.  It really has not been great live since Lovetown and U2 has so many better hits.  Still Haven't Found is so boring live even Bono can't bring himself to sing it half the time; he just lets the crowd do the work.  and I hate to admit it but I'm a bit tired of One at this point.  also could do without Stuck and Walk On, BD is a must though and though they have much better songs I won't complain if they keep Elevation in cuz it's a blast live.
Title: Re: 2015 Setlist: What staples would you like to see shelved for I+E?

The fact the crowd all sing ISHFWILF shows it's immensely popular with the vast majority of people at the shows.  Beautiful Day, One, WTSHNN, City of Blinding Lights, WOWY - these songs always go down very well, so it'd be unrealistic to think they'd drop them for the hardcore fans who have seen them played tour after tour.   I've certainly noticed Pride doesn't pack the same punch with crowds as it did in the 80s and early 90s, but it is a fantastic single, one of the very best they've ever put out.

I'd like to see Sunday Bloody Sunday go, the song they hoped "one day never to have to sing again".  The last time I got something from it was the Popmart tour with the Edge doing the singing.  I'd much rather they performed a song like "Please" if they want to tread these issues on the upcoming tour.
