Title: Poll: Favorite U2 studio album
Post by: Alton Dalton on November 06, 2008, 05:20:31 PM
For me, Achtung Baby, for its originality, but also that it was released during a pivotal time in my life.

THE JOSHUA TREE is the album by which all other rock-and-roll albums, U2's or otherwise, are measured and come up wanting.

I know AB is probably going to end up winning and it is an amazing, amazing record BUT I think that it can be pigeonholed into a certain time frame.  Besides a few songs, like One, I don't think that all of the songs are timeless.  They're still excellent and amazing but not timeless for me.  TJT is timeless.  I don't know how else to explain it.  D@mn the critics, I love the sincere, hearts on sleeves, earnestness of '80s U2.

"Iíll take an earnest person over a hip person any day, because hip is short term. Earnest is long term."  - Randy Pausch

Maybe that's what I mean by timeless.

I agree with this and with the earlier post for AB because "it was at a pivotal time in my life".

My vote for JT was because of its earnestness, because it was at a critical time in my life, because it was THE U2 album that really turned me on to the band.  I owned UF before I bought JT, but UF never fully resonated with me until much later.
Also, the depth of the Joshua Tree is absolutely amazing.  Not only are there the widely acclaimed super hits, but also Bullet, IGC, ATTYW, and Exit, which are all amazing (although I prefer the R&H movie version of Exit because you can hear and understand the start and because of the live intensity).  Any other band could have made a career out of the songs on the flip side of the JT (yes, vinyl).

I think everyone should know by now that The Unforgettable Fire is my personal choice for a favorite U2 album. It was an album that got U2 out from being a "Sloganeering Arena Rock Band" to a band with a social, spiritual conscience messege which will take them to superstar status with TJT.

But it's safe to say that without the musical risks the band took of maturing and improving themselves, the out of focus nature of the album, and help from Brain Eno and Daniel Lanios, the band wouldn't have gone the direction in they way that they did on TJT. And had it not been for the risk taking of TUF, then AB wouldn't even been considered.

Like everyone else I like them all - but October has such a draw (see October worship thread!) It was a such a key time for the band - questions about faith and all that but luckily for all of us they hung in there and we have all these other fantststic albums as well! I just think the angst comes through on the whole recording and through this becomes so powerful - combined with some real heavy Bono lyrics it just keeps me wanting more.

This changes regularly with me between "Rattle and Hum", "Joshua Tree", "Achtung Baby" and ATYCLB.
Today, it's the former, which would have made a great studio album, too, if the sole live track included were "Silver And Gold", only on the strength of the studio songs alone. The band's sound is at their hymnical best on this album, and I've always had a thing going for the blues, which is why this is probably my favourite.

Pop

It's U2 being so non-U2 yet still being U2.... ???

That's probably the best explanation I can give. But, yeah, Pop has some great songs on it.....Mofo, Staring At The Sun, Please....ummm basically the whole album's great.

It's just too bad U2 doesn't realize the masterpiece they created.

Boy is a great one, so is War. They are all so good but if I had to answer this one, I keep coming back to October.  There is just something about it that gets to me.  I'm new here and I didn't notice a War worship thread.  Did I miss it?  I just wanted to add that one of the things I love about that one is Kid Creole's Coconut girls on the backup vocals!  They sound great with U2.

Definately Achtung Baby. I'd say it's one of the top 5 albums ever. Everything from the desperate sound in Bono's voice, to the change in style for U2. Plus I discovered it at a very important time of my life. And every song is just perfect.

I had a hard time choosing between The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, and Zooropa. Weeded out Zooropa because though it has AMAZING songs I simply could not live without, it's not as consistently good as the other two, in my opinion. And then...Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby...that's just cruel to make me choose =)

But ultimately I went for Achtung Baby, probably because I don't skip a single song on it when I listen. I do skip "Trip Through Your Wires" and "One Tree Hill" I must admit...not that they're bad songs, not at all, but I can't listen to them over and over.

That said, I'm surprised War doesn't have a single vote!  ???

I have to go with Zooropa because... Do I have to have a reason?

Thanks for not having NLOTH as a choice. There hasn't been enough exposure time yet. It hasn't even been released yet ;D

War is second for me.

I can change my opinion, but Unforgettable Fire has probably spent the most time on top.  I love the atmosphere of the album coupled with its imagery.

Rattle and Hum is the worst.  I like most of the original tracks but everything else thrown in there makes it less enjoyable.  I would have liked it better had they taken the original tracks and put them on a new album with Hallelujah Here She Comes and A Room At The Heartbreak Hotel.  I've done it before in a playlist on my iPod and it comes out quite nicely other than all the audience noise and ridiculous interview clip attached to Van Diemen's Land.  I wish they had a version of Van Diemen's Land available without that stuff.

Their worst full studio album is War.  Some great tracks but then some not so great tracks.  Like A Song, The Refugee, and Red Light are some of the worst things they've ever done.  The first three songs are excellent.  Drowning Man is a nice respite in between some bad stuff.  The album is their least consistent and doesn't have the flow that their other albums all seem to have.  But War was great in that it showed U2 that that direction was a dead end.  They'd go on to much greater things, though Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day have definitely stood the test of time.

Pop. I think it's the most complete U2 album as a whole - even Miami works well in the context of this album.
I bought this album whilst travelling in Australia in 1997 and it always takes me back there, it's so evocative.
Discotheque, IGWSHA, LNOE, Gone, Please are some of U2's best songs.

The are other great U2 albums - AB and JT, but there are one or two weak tracks on them. eg So Cruel on AB, MOTD on JT for instance.

The Unforgettable Fire, it's U2's masterpiece.

By the way, a complete ranking of their studio albums would go as this:

1. The Unforgettable Fire

2. The Joshua Tree (very good)
3. Achtung Baby
4. Boy
5. Zooropa

6. Pop (good)

7. War (good but with flaws)
8. October
9. No Line on the Horizon (it's still a bit soon to rank it definitely, though)

10. Rattle and Hum (decent)

11. All That You Should Have Left Behind (subpar)
12. How to Dismantle a Reputation (subpar)

Ouch!  That's harsh.  Personally, I REALLY liked both of these albums.  For me, they were more "listenable" than The Unforgettable Fire, October, and Zooropa.  I'd place them in the middle of the U2 album rankings.  For the record, I believe that TUF, October, and Zooropa were all very good albums but IMO they were not as good as ATYCLB and HTDAAB.  I realize that this isn't the popular viewpoint on these message boards since it has become en vogue to criticize these 2 albums recently, but I really think that these 2 albums have allowed U2 to gain a larger fan base and have given them the determination to expand their "Horizons" on their most recent album.

can't just say they dont like those two albums, has to be a catchy twist of the album title to drive the point home.  Kinda like the Forgettable Fire.

Has to be Pop by a good distance. I think it was a lot better received in the UK and Europe and I think it has some of bono's best lyrics and I may be putting myself out on aledge here some of the best music. I think it holds together fantasticly as a complete album and I still get so much enjoyment listening to it. I really wish the band weren't so down on it and I actually much prefered the album mixes over the new versions on the second best of's where I felt they were redone to appease the American market.

I hate that I can't vote for Pop because it deserves it.  But Achtung Baby is just too damn good, and Pop has a few fatal flaws like the lyrics in Playboy Mansion and Wake up Dead Man.

I agree with you about the listenability and larger fan base comments... It's just that for me those albums are not the real U2. The real U2 for me is a band with both a restless spirit and a universal ambition. It's the tension between these apparently opposed characteristics that makes their greatness. Remove the restless spirit from them and they become an ordinary band...

Also, I would be able to embrace an album full of conventional 3 minute pop songs if only these songs were really good. But most of the stuff on ATYCLB and HTDAAB are not even that catchy...

I'm a Pop Tart. There's just so much darkness in those lyrics, and you can really listen to the album as a whole. It's more than a bunch of songs, and, well... I hold this album close to my heart.

So many great U2 recordings, and I can justify anyone of them as a choice, but for me, one reigns supreme.

The Joshua Tree

For me, there is no other recording that can match the opening five songs on TJT, plus it has the greatest album/concert opener ever and U2's greatest song "Streets". If for no other reason, "Streets" makes TJT U2's greatest recording, the fact that what follows it never lets up makes it, for me, easily U2's greatest work.

Haha, sorry, couldn't resist it. By the way, Forgettable Fire is a good one too. Even though it's totally unfair...

(Hawthorn reads thread and boils over like Elmer Fudd aggravated by Bugs Bunny)

"Forgettable Fire"...gonna pretend I didn't read that. ( :D)

It's really hard for me to choose these days.  I really love more than a few of their albums for different reasons.  I became a fan with The Unforgettable Fire.  So, that album has sentimental reasons for being my favorite.  Plus, that's the album where we hear Bad for the first time.  'Nuff said.  I love The Joshua Tree because it brings back great high school memories for me and that is the first album from my generation that I just thought was the definition of what a perfect album was.  I love Achtung, Baby for when Edge truly WAS on fire and it's the album that got Bono into black leather and Fly shades.  Another perfect album!  I love Zooropa for it's weirdness.  I love All That You Can't Leave Behind for bringing my band back to it's roots and I love this new album for the challenges that they put into it.

Gun to my head?  The Joshua Tree is probably still my fave.  But the older I get, the harder it is to choose.

All That You Cant Leave Behind. Was the album that made me fall for U2. And because it has Kite...

Every poll I've ever seen conducted on any U2 forum always has almost the same results:

Solid 1 and 2: AB and JT

Fighting 3 and 4: TUF and Pop

Battling it out for the wooden spoon: HTDAAB and October

This is actually easier than the "worst album" one... I'll go with:

1. Achtung Baby
2. The Unforgetable Fire
3. The Joshua Tree
4. Zooropa
5. October

Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

My favorite U2 album is Achtung Baby.  I've probably listened to it 1000 times and still love it.  Inspiring, challenging, daring, exciting, meaningful...the adjectives go on and on. Simply their best moment.

It's weird, i've always had JT as my #1, with AB and UF fighting out for #2 with Pop in 4.

I played AB recently and you know what ? It sounded dated and nowhere near as "great" as i've always had it ranked. Maybe it's because the production is so bad, but it didn't quite grab me the same way. Pop on th eother hand still sounds fresh and exciting. Maybe I need to find a vinyl AB.

Achtung Baby is their most complete album.   Joshua Tree is runner up by a bit.  Honestly Achtung baby is not only their best album within U2.  But perhaps the greatest album of all time.  Its just so remarkably complete.

1. The Unforgettable Fire
2. The Joshua Tree
3. NLOTH
4. Achtung Baby

That's my current thinking, it tends to shift quite a lot. I will say that the first three albums have a really refreshing rawness about them; an outpouring of emotion and passion, everything on the surface. That's both their strength and their weakness; it makes them brilliant, but it means they lack a lot of the more refined, polished feel of the other albums and they don't (WITH some exceptions) have as much variety and depth as a lot of the later stuff.

Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree are the two albums which I'd say have no weak links- there's honestly not a single song on either of them which I dislike, though there is, as always, a range in qualities. But TUF has four absolutely phenomenal tracks which push it to number one in my view, Joshua Tree still has the best opening of any album ever (The first five tracks, one after the other- BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM!) and NLOTH is another album which is really, really strong all-round and has a few stand-out tunes.  After the top four, it all becomes blurred- probably ATYCLB, HTDAAB, Pop and War all vying to be around there.
