Title: I&E: Europa Leg
Post by: garyu2 on August 06, 2015, 08:39:26 AM
Heres my proposed setlist. I've tried to compromise with what's realistic with a touch of fanboy stuff;

1. The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
2. Vertigo
3. The Electric Co.
4. Two Hearts Beat As One
5. I Will Follow
6. Cedarwood Road
7. Song For Someone
8. Sunday Bloody Sunday
9. Raised By Wolves
10. Until The End Of The World
11. Discotheque
12. Even Better Than The Real Thing
13. Desire
14. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
15. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?
16. Every Breaking Wave
17. With Or Without You
18. Bullet The Blue Sky
19. Pride (In The Name Of Love)
20. MLK / Where The Streets Have No Name

21. Ultra-Violet (Light My Way)
22. Mofo / Iris
23. Bad / Moment of Surrender
24. One

I've went heavy on the old rockers at the start as I think they have been a highlight. Great energy on Electric Co and Two Hearts. U2 have been rotating them, I want 'em both!

I've binned a couple of dullards. Invisible is gone for Discotheque (imagined THIS inside the screen, BOOM CHA!). Desire-Still Havent Found-Wild Horses will make up the full band e-stage section. Superb songs and sing-a-long anthems.

City Of Blinding Lights is sacked without mercy.

I would also drop the Stephen Hawkin guff and the Mother And Child Reunion into Streets segment. Instead, MLK and Streets will form their combo like they did at the Superbowl 2002. That was incredible.

I've put Iris into the encore as I think it deserves more prominence and it sits nicely between Ultra-Violet and Bad (iTunes playlist is a Godsend).

They won't change it much because of the HBO Special which already features behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the tour and the US legs, plus the Paris show will be live.

For a worldwide televised bit, U2 won't also do a full version of a song from POP or No Line On The Horizon.

This proposed setlist seems to have more "fanboy stuff" than "what's realistic."

Just my two cents, hope you don't take any offense.

Cheers,

J

There's too many rarities. Horses won't happen. Ultraviolet is unlikely because it was played so much last tour.Still haven't found and one won't appear in the same setlist. It's one of the other, and I assume they will still be closers in Europe. We'lol see a few more debuts of rehearsed songs and hopefully the other 2 SOI songs. Invisible is to stay just because of how it works with the encore. Pride I could imagine leaving and NYD being rotated in the second song slot. Don't understand why vertigo is second slot when it's #3. The first half of the show tells a story so I think rbw into UTTEOTW is to stay until the show goes outdoors

Paris is just one show. They could still be making the documentary if it follows their travels, so it may show the transitions and the bands opinions, which would be really cool

I would have dropped Bullet with its American themes even thought it is the standout of the tour.

The core parts of the set will remain unchanged.

They might add or change a couple of songs - I expect "New Years Day" to make it in slot #2 or #4 in Europe, and possibly "Fly" to replace "Even Better". "Mysterious Ways" might become a 'every other night' song. I imagine some of the B-stage songs will change a little, and maybe they'll be more variety in the last song of the night. I think maybe by the time they get to night#6 in London and #3 in Paris, they might be ending on huge "Bad" medleys, like they did at the end of the Vertigo 2005 shows.

I really wish they would do a decent MLK / Streets segue, the only one I've seen was for the Super Bowl and that wasn't done too well, it could be great.

EBTTRT is pretty stuck i think since there are few other songs where they can all stop playing in the middle to get out of the screen.

EBTTRT is pretty much stuck, but you know, they could play "The Fly" instead. "Fly" wasn't played in Europe after 2005. and I think the screen would lend itself very well to that song/

Nah, Invisible is probably one of the lowest points of the show. Without the surprise factor of them appearing in the screen it's pretty uninspiring.

Ok here is what they have to do for Invisible. Since the song is an obvious nod to Kraftwerk they could drop it  and replace it with Tour de France by the German pioneers. Bono of course could out last riding his bike!

Can see invisible getting jibbed as it is virtually unknown here...it may have been a song that got a bit of mileage in the US with it being on a chat show and American Football but here it is unknown really.

Same with OL.

Bullet can always be reworked into a more European theme....Hands will almost certainly get jibbed.

Maybe NYD, less likely but very much hoped for would be Please and probably one or two tracks that are surprises but not played every show.

That is my guess

I really hope they will play NYD on the Europe leg considering it has more of a European theme to it. Agree with you about Invisible, doubt anyone at the UK shows will know it, heard it played once on the radio the day after its release.

As for political stuff, the migrant crisis will certainly get a mention. Not sure about anything else. Perhaps the recent terrorist atrocities in France will get a mention.

If ever there was a time to bring back Please it's now, what with all the messing that's going on in the Northern Ireland Assembly and the does the Provisional IRA still exist/does it not question that's threatening to tear down the peace process. Can't see it happening though.

I'm curious what you mean by Bullet perhaps needing a more 'European' theme for this leg.  Would you agree that the reworked lyrics are primarily about the 'experienced' Bono talking to his younger, innocent self?  You're probably right that Hands will/should get dropped.  A second set end of Bullet - Please - The Troubles - With or Without You would work really well in my opinion.

My proposed setlist:

1. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
2. I Will Follow
3. Vertigo
4. Invisible
5. Cedarwood Road
6. Song For Someone
7. Sunday Bloody Sunday
8. Raised By Wolves
9. Until The End Of The World
10. The Fly
11. Gone
12. Mysterious Ways
13. Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World
14. Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
15. New Year's Day
16. Bullet The Blue Sky
17. Running To Stand Still
18. City Of Blinding Lights
19. With Or Without You
20. Pride (In The Name Of Love)

21. Beautiful Day
22. Elevation
23. Where The Streets Have No Name
24. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

So hope you are right, but I don't think The Miracle will be supplanted as the opener and it works well.

The Fly is the Intermission video and it is terrific!

Wow, U2 must be reading u2gigs and realizing that they haven't played the song of which the continent was inspired since 1993.

IMHO, The Fly, MW and EBTTRT should be on the chopping block.

After hearing the @u2 podcast...

Iris>UTEOW is a 99% lock

- They may change some of the songs in 1-4, but realistically, they'll probably open up slot #2 for Electric C, OOC, Gloria, possibly New Years Day.
- They may add a song or two in the Cedarwood Road section
- Zooropa, Discotheque, Fly may come into the "Invisible>EBTTRT" segment
- Rest of it they will probably do some more jiggling around, but we'll only see big changes where they have four nights or more
- I wouldn't be surprised if Numb or Van Diemens Land appear in the E-stage
- I can't remember if they're playing Warsaw, but NYD will come out to play there if they are
- Miracle Drug is probably now extinct in the wild

No idea about what the reworked lyrics to Bullet are as i haven't followed things that closely....i am aware of setlists but not so aware of arrangements.

I just assumed that they might pick up on a european theme for it....i may well be miles off.

I am hoping Invisible gets jibbed as it is a real dud for me....and they could use that slot for something much more interesting.

The 2nd half is where i would expect change most - it is also where the set lists i have seen look most horrible at times.

re invisible. You do understand the industry model of promoting new material through live shows in order to generate interest and sales? Lower music sales these days obviously, but Principal remains.

no one is buying Invisible after hearing/seeing it live... it is just a dud as an tha says... and I say that as someone who is OK with the studio version (i.e. not great, but not terrible).  as for the presentation... the screen thing is a gimmick (albeit kinda cool at first) but the song just goes nowhere live.

Re: Invisible ... I think the song is borderline, and I went into my show really looking forward to it. The problem is, they pick that song to be the one with the video screen trick. I get it thematically (Invisible/now you see us/now you don't) but a stronger song would probably be a better time to play peek-a-boo with the audience. If they were on the b-stage rocking out to Invisible, it would probably go over better.

The Fly would work better in that spot don't know why they haven't played it yet, also Ultraviolet needs to be brought back in a real highlight when played ,I can see them throwing in one or two new songs on this leg Bono has played 4 or 5 to a few journalists in the last few wks so they must be thinking about doing it ,the core of the show will probably not change but they might be tempted to experiment a bit more as they have the U.S. behind them now.

Today's countdown clip is a super-tease, with audio that sounds just like the intro to COBL but then Edge chimes in with something altogether more appropriate to this leg of the tour...

(I didn't think I'd get to obliquely reference one of my favourite songs in my first post!)

Welcome to @U2 Conor!

Historically speaking, there's not much reason to expect many experiments. It's just not true that they tend to experiment more in Europe than the USA; what is true is that they tend to experiment on certain legs. The second leg usually sees the least experimentation whatever continent it's in, because they've nailed down the basic structure and aren't ready to change it much yet; they will make a few (4-5) changes at the very start but then stay pretty consistent throughout.

That said, they also don't normally play so many songs on the first leg, and they've been willing to do a fair few things differently, so the routine may well change!

I'm curious what you mean by Bullet perhaps needing a more 'European' theme for this leg.  Would you agree that the reworked lyrics are primarily about the 'experienced' Bono talking to his younger, innocent self?  You're probably right that Hands will/should get dropped.  A second set end of Bullet - Please - The Troubles - With or Without You would work really well in my opinion.

No idea about what the reworked lyrics to Bullet are as i haven't followed things that closely....i am aware of setlists but not so aware of arrangements.

Good Lad!

Personally, I'm hoping for a European theme for Streets.

re invisible. You do understand the industry model of promoting new material through live shows in order to generate interest and sales? Lower music sales these days obviously, but Principal remains.

I reckon promotional performances on TV, interviews and advertising and the like generate interest in the new music rather than the tours.

But it's been 12 months or so plus since invisible was released! and given it was a freebie for a time as well, it didn't make the album and probably delayed the release of SOI as a result of poor reception to that and ordinary love. Why promote it now? what exactly are they trying to promote...there's 4 songs on the album they haven't played or played much i'd rather hear before Invisible and Ordinary love.

Each to their own though, I just don't get why invisible is a set list staple at the minute

A snippet of the Refugee somewhere? Maybe BTBS, the theme of the song seems to be one of the most malleable.

I don't think anything new will get played, there's already a high number of album / relatively new songs, I don't see them reducing that number in this leg, the new stuff will stay the same the warhorses I think are more likely to get switched around, as people say possible The Fly (regardless of whether people say they wont play due to Bono's injury), NYD, Zooropa etc

Well, the countdown clips on the official site are definitely hinting at something with Zooropa. The vocal/humming sound at the end confirming it's Zooropa and not COBL. If they're teasing it then I'd expect more than just a snippet at the end of BTBS. Maybe they now realise that writing a song that good and hardly ever playing it is criminal.

Always remember that this is the band who claimed they were playing something from every album on 360 because 'Pop' got a 30 second snippet at the end of I'll Go Crazy.

I must admit to real surprise when I first heard SoI after being somewhat disillusioned by invisible and OL.  Who knew?

It's a staple because it's a new song and was heavily promoted, at least compared to the songs not yet played from SoI.  maybe they also like the sound of it and that it fits in with the sound they're going for in the early part of Set 2.

good idea

maybe bono could dedicate One to the refugee crisis and sing the lines from Tacoma '92. "hear us coming, hear us call, hear us banging at the door. hear us banging, banging, banging at the door"

Bring back the Elevation version of the Fly! By far the bet version of the song and Bono doesn't need a guitar and is far superior to Invisible, which is a good song but I don't think it has translated well at all.

The Fly won't happen, it's the intermission part.
Read the intervieuw with Willie Williams

Stuck in a moment: i hope not, same for One,
don't mind if they let both out of the setlist.
EBTTRT, will hold it's spot in de set, i hope.
October and New Years Day are rehaersed in Turin.
Was hoping on other  songs from War: Surender or Secconds.

Accept for a few songs, i hope they will not play. I don't care what the setlist will be.

Going to Amsterdam 1,2 and 4. So hope i will not miss out on Gloria, Two Hearts, Vulcano, Lucifer's Hands, Crystal Ballroom, Bad and 40 (last one most likely on the last one)

Will go nuts anyway :)

I read that Zooropa is being rehearsed and so is New Years Day for Europe.

They posted video on FB of Zooropa. Freaking jealous if they play it.

The tiny snippet of Zooropa sounds amazing!  The effect on Edge's guitar is perfect for a small post-bullet snippet.  This is going to be really powerful i think!

Do you guys think we will get a guest appearance to perform still haven't found in each country? Since Italy got Zucchero and I know that U2 are fond of the Golden Earring, so possibly a collaboration with Barry Hay? Would be cool!  8)

Anton usually gets an honorably mention during the show, but I don't see him getting a spot on stage.
