Title: What U2 song are you addicted to right now?
Post by: AltonDalton on September 11, 2015, 04:41:13 PM
I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but every once in a while, I'll hear a U2 song, and go absolutely crazy for it at a random time. I'll then listen to it 3-4 times a day for the next week, and have it stuck in my head at all times. Then it'll be replaced by another song and the cycle will repeat

Like right now it's do you feel loved
Earlier it was miracle drug and then surrender before that.

In A Little While is literally always in my head, for some reason. There isn't a day that goes by I do not think about it. I'm pretty addicted to Blow Your House Down right now.

Velvet Dress was the last song that got in my head due to me finally getting the atmosphere created by Bono's lyrics and perfectly complemented by the bands sonics.

The song that has lasted in my head the longest, to the point where I had to go and listen to it at random times of the day was Soon. For a seemingly simple and short song it has got enough legs to run and run in my head for weeks.

Pride got me a month ago and it still rocks. I find it surprising because I got bored with Pride years ago.

Sunday Bloody Sunday at the moment, and the drumbeat at the start of Daddy's Gonna Pay, both are so catchy.

Too many people to be a coincidence, that song has a certain "something" in it! Always in my head too

sometimes I forget how awesome the studio version is because of how saturated it is live, same with mysterious ways

My husband is addicted to Song for Someone. He switches to that song whenever it plays on the radio. Today he even rewound it because he was talking at the time.

Zooropa is always that song for me.  The Unforgettable Fire and Bad also often end up stuck on repeat, and so does 11 O'Clock Tick Tock.... sorry, nothing new lately, although I was stuck on Cedarwood Road for quite a while a few months ago.

I'm really getting into the whole "Under A Blood Red Sky" album after purchasing it around a month ago.

11 O'Clock Tick Tock is a magnificent live song. I wish they'd bring this to the I+E Tour. Their performance of it at Roxy was incredible so I see no reason why it can't be slotted into a setlist.

They definitely need to do this, I agree.

How are they not including more songs from their earliest albums. I'd love to see some of them make an appearnace on tour. Imagine a setlist which includes Twilight, ATAP, THBAO, Like A Song, Surrender etc. The word "epic" springs to mind  ;D

Dislike the parent album, but thank god it happened, if it didn't, we would likely not be here as one of many rabid fans of a still massively popular U2. It got their career back on track, though of course many of us think Pop was the right track

I'm kind of rediscovering the studio songs for Achtung Baby right now since I usually just listen to Zoo TV stuff. I forgot how amazing the production for the album really is, especially compared to SOI! I wish I had time to listen now, but I'll get to it tomorrow.

Yeah this seems to be the blueprint of many discussions. I often wonder if POP would have been better received if it was the album to accompany AB in 93 rather than Zooropa. And vice versa, would Zooropa have got the hate if it was released in '97.

Out of Control and Elvis Presley And America.  Something about the performance of Out of Control by TUF at the Cutting Room for the anniversary show got me back into that song...I think the way the sung the last verse...gave me chills.  As for EP&A, I cannot put my finger on it, but I have been listening to it a lot lately.

I don't understand why the year it was released affects that? Is it just because they were still riding the post-AB / Zoo TV wave of success in 1993?

Yeah this seems to be the blueprint of many discussions. I often wonder if POP would have been better received if it was the album to accompany AB in 93 rather than Zooropa. And vice versa, would Zooropa have got the hate if it was released in '97.
as is
How funny...I just listened to that cd today! Grace is a wonderful song.

I haven't been listening to a lot of U2 lately.  But early last week I woke up with "Shadows and Tall Trees" in my head and I've listened to it several times in the last week...  It's always been in the bottom half of my personal favorites from Boy, but for some reason I'm rather smitten with it lately.

New Year's Day is the addicting tune today. I was researching it a bit after listening to it this morning, and soon led into reading about other U2 songs. I must say that I am slowly becoming absolutely amazed by this band.  :D

Phenomenal tune. Underrated around here.  Wish they would have figured out how to play it live.  I fear it may never get a live airing again.

Right now, got Bonos Miserere duet with Pavarotti in my head. To see the B man match the maestro - in Italian - on an Italian stage - was incredible, and Pavarotti's look of respect was amazing....

Unknown Caller (yes, I said it right)
The Electric Co.
Wire
Van Diemens Land

Unknown Caller is on my all-time favorite list.  So different from everything they've done, in many small ways.  During 360 it was this and Ultraviolet that was practically on permanent repeat.

Now, This is Where You Can Reach Me Now (again, very different from the rest of U2 catalog, the rhythm, guitars, chant, everything)  Raised by Wolves and Cedarwood Road.

I'm with you, together we can overcome this terrible affliction.
In all seriousness the melody can get right in your head and take you places.

Great song.  I will defend it with my dying breath.  Very polarizing song

Oh and the U2 song I am addicted to now is Zoo Station from the Stockholm Zoo TV show.

For me its always those songs that I never quite got into when they were released and then all of a sudden I hear it somewhere and I got back to give it the attention it never received.  Lately it has been Wild Honey and before that, Heartland.

Just watched it...thanks. Really nice version of Ultraviolet...love when Bono messed up the 2nd verse & put his hand over his mouth, like "oops". And, With or Without You was great...Bono's voice was really on. And he did "We'll shine like stars..." YAY! They don't do that often enough. The closeups of Edge's guitar (that's the infinite guitar, right?) are nice, too. The whole band was kicking butt on both songs...what a sound they produce. Just amazes me.
Title: Re: What U2 song are you addicted to right now?
Post by: LightMyWay92 on January 15, 2016, 07:29:44 AM
Yeah, the "shine like stars" coda at the end really adds something, as does the extended guitar solo from Edge.  I also like when he adds stuff to the end of "One."  I forget what he all says, but it's something like "Do you hear me coming, love, hear me call, hear me knocking, knocking at your door."  It's even more potent when he sings something a capella like "Amazing Grace" or "Unchained Melody," before going into the next song.  Very dramatic!  That guitar is actually a Gibson Explorer.  It's a very cool looking guitar!

He uses the Explorer on With or Without You? I thought he always used the infinite for that one.
The Explorer goes WAY back...to the beginning, I think. Although I think I read somewhere that the original Explorer had to be retired, so this one is a newer one. I was THRILLED at the SOI show in Phoenix...our seats were very close to the Edge end of the stage (GREAT view of the entire band, but especially Edge), and before the show Dallas came out to test or tune or whatever the Explorer.

You're right.  He used the Explorer on Ultraviolet and switched to the Infinite for With or Without You.

I only saw U2 live once (I know, totally not like everyone else on this forum :), but when I did see them in Milwaukee in 2005 on the Vertigo Tour, I took my then 7-year old step-son (who I got into U2), and we had General Admission tickets.  We found out when we got there that at the band's orders, any children with their parents who had GA tickets automatically get inside the circular catwalk they used on that tour, whatever it was called.  I deliberately stood on Edge's side of the stage so I could watch him.  I was close enough to see the slide guitar thing on his finger during "Bullet" and a few other songs, and I could also read the "Gibson" and "Fender" on the head stocks of his guitars!  During "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," I was singing the words, and Edge saw me, made eye contact and smiled at me!  I always tell that story!

Holy crap, Lightmyway, I am pretty much drooling over that. You are SO lucky! I'm so happy for you...wow. I love guitars (and, of course, especially Edge guitars)...would give anything to be so close. I used to play guitar (piano, too), but my hand got closed in a car door years ago...one finger pretty much crushed. So much for my musical career. But, that's okay...at least I can still appreciate a nice guitar and rig. I was thrilled just to be as close as we were to Edge...I could see him play pretty well, but not as well as you. Good for you! Never forget.

The funny thing was, as much as I wanted to watch Edge, I kept being drawn back to Bono, and not just because he's the singer.  His stage presence is huge!  Also, being that close I couldn't experience much of the light show, but being that close to the band more than made up for that!

That IS funny...about being drawn back to Bono versus watching Edge play, but I totally agree. I've always called it "The Bono Show"...he is a great front man. I appreciated him so much more after seeing them in person. And, yeah, you being that close to the band in general...wooo hooo! If I could handle being that physically close to a bunch of strangers, I'd love to be in the GA sometime, but I think I'd freak. And, like I said the seats we had in Phoenix were unbelievable anyway. Oh, man, I need a U2 fix bad! Sure wish they'd continue this tour...back in Phoenix again especially!

Oh, man, I need a U2 fix bad! Sure wish they'd continue this tour...back in Phoenix again especially!
I remember the GA being fun and social, almost a party atmosphere!  I remember me and some girl near me that I didn't even know correcting Bono to each other when he messed up the lyrics to "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses."  They did that song acoustically with Bono and Edge on the catwalk.  You could tell that they hadn't played it in a while.  Of course I love that song!  They also played "The First Time" acoustically.  That was great as well!

Does anyone get addicted to the less than stellar U2 songs?

I often find myself addicted to Some Days Are Better Than Others.  Lyrically, I find it a bit of a silly song, but that's what I like about it.  Otherwise, I'm almost always addicted to Zooropa, One Tree Hill, and 11 O'Clock Tick Tock.

I think also the "little songs" have some great lyrics.

In Some days are better than others for example I like this line:
some days you use more force than is necessary

No Line on the Horizon has been my go-to song this week. I wish they'd play that song live again.

I think this is the only track on the album I listen to.  Crank it up whenever it comes on.

I love that song.  Best U2 song since 1993 for me.  But the way they did it live....  Meh....

I've been listening to rattle and hum recently, some of the songs from that album have been sticking with me such as heartland and of course all I want is you. I can't stop listening to all I want is you right now.

One of my go-to U2 albums.  Don't bother so much with the live tracks, but All I Want is You is one of my top three faves.  Love Rescue Me seems to get a lot of hate, but I've always liked it as well.  Curious is the version with Dylan singling lead with Bono exists out there.  Know his label nixed it before it could be put on the album.

Love Rescue Me is my favorite on the album. It didn't grab me initially but over the years I've grown to love it.

Love rescue me is another great song. I love the live versions with BB King on Lovetown and the 360 version on U22. And of course the album version is great as well.
