Title: Worst opening song.
Post by: Giga Razor on December 13, 2015, 05:51:07 PM
Breathe as the first song just didn't work for me, it was like someone unplugged the juke box at the party.

Outside of the chanting, Miracle seems a little flat compared to other openers they have had.

If you start with he premise that the opening song should be something that everyone in the crowd knows (the Big Radio Hit), anything from now on just isn't going to be the same.  It will be a giant miracle (no pun intended) if U2 ever has a genuine big hit again. This is the era of hip-hop and pop. Rock bands like theirs just aren't the big thing anymore. This would have sounded insane 30 years ago, but here we are.

"Elevation" is just about the limit of how far U2 ought to ever go in the direction of fluff pop-rock, but it was perfect as an opener for its time.  It has the right energy, and EVERYONE knew it.  It didn't have to be a very meaningful song; if just had to kick off the crowd.

"Joey Ramone" is theoretically a great opener, but a lot of the crowd doesn't know it for the reasons discussed above.  I really don't know what they do about that in the future, other than what they're already doing now. "This is our new album, this is what we are at singing about, listen up".  If that bothers anyone who doesn't know anything that wasn't on Joshua Tree, oh well.

I dislike Miracle, and in particular, the way it's staged.  Not to be picky:

For one, I don't like Bono taking the stage, with house lights up, alone on the catwalk.  There's already too much general perception of U2 as "Bono + the other guys".  Starting the show like this doesn't help alleviate that impression.  And they've already started a show with the house lights up to better effect with Elevation.  Also, the word-less sing-along before the song starts: it's not that popular a tune, so it's not like the crowd is just clamoring to sing along with the "new hit song".  It all just seems too presumptuous: "we know you love Bono, here he is!  He doesn't even need to do anything, you'll just scream for him and sing along to the new song because he's inviting you to!"  Once the show kicks off, it's fine--though it's still maybe my least-liked song from the new album--but I wish they just started the show by building anticipating, lights going out, and the band takes the stage.

Maybe not the best one, but I liked it a lot, it gives the song more energy that way. I wonder if Magnificent would work out. I hope for next tour they have a real cool lift off .......

Breathe. I love it for its originality and experimentation, but the verses are just way too embarrassing.

Breathe is a good song and I liked it as a non crowd pleasing single opener. However I agree some of the lyrics are awful.

COBL is a bad song, opener or otherwise.

Mofo was amazing, obviously

Miracle is OK - it's U2 big single by numbers but it works well.

Stingray was U2 trying to do something new after they realised no one wanted to hear anything from NLOTH. It wasn't very good.

Elevation worked well as an upbeat opener - although I can take or leave the song it had plenty of energy.

Return of the Stingray Guitar.

This. Just terrible.

Vertigo didn't work as an opener either. COBL was much better as the opener on the Vertigo tour.

Breathe.  Always thought the first 3 songs for the 360 shows shouldve been; GOYB, EBTTRT, NLOTH

I don't know if you can count Stingray Guitar. It wasn't really the first song, so much as it was music for Bono to take the stage. Almost like the mix of Elevation that would play as the band walked up, or Popmusik.  It was his post-surgery "Look I can walk again!" song.

That's true, but it also was instrumental background music for Bono to hop around and show off his working back.  If you watch the Turin performance, it definitely doesn't feel like the show has officially started yet.

Breathe isn't terrible, which is something you can't say about a lot of NLOTH, but it's not a strong opener.

However for openers in general you were SOL if you were at early Vertigo shows, they didn't have a clue what they were doing, sounded like they had just started rehearsing aboiut 3 days prior to the tour start and I think within one week had tried 3 different openers. None worked very well.

The last GREAT opener was Mofo, Elevation is a forgettable song but a decent opener.

I enjoyed the intro of Breathe. The chaotic drumming  into searing  strums from The Edge. Then, Bono jumping up and down to get everyone up before singing was awesome. Then, the song- good, but not great.

Later in that tour, they opened with EBTTRT. Same kind of intro- wild sounds and chaos. This song fit this type of introduction. And, I loved it.

Miracle turned out to be a good opening song also.

Well alright, Beautiful Day is the worst opening song.  Opening with Breathe was a ballsy move.

I really liked Miracle as the opener...AFTER Bono got to the stage and the guitar kicked in. I didn't really care for Bono's long stroll down the runway...but when Edge hit those first notes, I was just gone!
Who cares if everyone didn't know the song? Hard core fans (yes, I am one!) know the song   and I think enjoyed it.

I thought that Breathe was a great opener, especially the way they did it live. And if there's one song in the show where wonky lyrics can slide by, it's the opener when everyone is screaming anyway.

I'm a little iffy on the new version of EBTTRT. So much pre-recorded material.

With the exception of Mofo, none of these opening songs were very memorable.  After each of the respective tours had ended, you just seem to forget about them as opening songs.  It's probably too soon to tell with the Miracle of Joey Ramone, but I get the feeling we'll probably forget about it in a couple of years.  It's not that the songs are absolutely terrible, it's just that they don't leave very lasting impressions if you happened to attend those concerts.  And on that note, I did not vote for any of these songs.

- Mofo: the only time U2 has ever entered a stadium set to a disco/pop song. Has not been done since.
- Elevation: U2 actually entered the stage with the house lights on during the Joshua Tree Tour when they opened with Stand By Me.
- COBL: Aside from the questionable lyrics of the song, visuals that were employed during the song's opening can be seen as a derivative of the visuals used during the opening of Zoo Station.
- Breathe: Agree with the sentiment here on this thread, this song just seems to lack the oomph or energy of past tours that started with better opening songs.

Not that cobl is a bad song (it's not) but it's an encore opener at best. So that's my vote. Breathe would be a close second.

Mofo is top 3 best openers.

Worst was Breathe by a mile, just no punch.

Miracle is forgettable but the crowds really sing along which makes it so much better.

I wouldn't put it on that list either, but it's not unjustifiable:

1) Too many sequencers
2) Adam's....clothes?
3) The opposite of a sing-along
4) Was Edge's backup singing real on the first leg of the tour?

How in the world does Mofo have any votes? It kicks the proverbial ass of all the other songs on the list.

Elevation, while not a great song, was a pretty decent opener. COBL was good. Breathe really didn't do anything for me (as with most of the crowd) and EBTTRT ended up being a much better opener on 360. The Miracle is a pretty weak song an I hope is dropped next time they tour.

im gonna change my vote to Breathe. At least COBL was a <relatively> successful single, Breathe wasn't a single and sure wasn't a sing along. Yea yea i know neither was Zoo St. but that was a GREAT opener.

Later in the tour, he was definitely singing for real, but I think there was an in-between where it was both live and a backing track.  If you watch the performance of MOFO at the MTV Europe awards, you can hear both (listen closely):

http://youtu.be/bnYF5O91EfM

Thoughts while watching this: U2 was absolutely getting crapped on in the US during this era, but looking at this performance, I think it was the last time that U2 was undefined.  By which I mean, they didn't constrain themselves by other people's expectations at all.  Not so sure that's true anymore.  Are they still this fearless? And to be fair, would they still be around if they had continued to be that fearless?

Other thoughts about the clip: Bono is easily in the best shape of his life there.  He needs to hit the gym and come back like a leopard for the next tour.  Holding your jacket closed with one hand is so 2013.

My 2 cents.  Prob Miracle. If only for the drumming... Larry does that bizarre 16ths beat on the high hat and it sounds wrong...

It's like how he does it on Elevation at the rose bowl 360 tour.

Neither Miracle or Elevation have 16ths in the recordings. Playing it like this live - it just sounds messy and out of time.

Let's not forget LAPOE , they opened some vertigo shows with it when they realized they hadn't given one iota of thought into the opener. Pretty much just throwing sh** at the wall to see what would stick. Typical under rehearsed u2 your opening dates.

I always thought that COBL made a great opener, to be honest. Watch the Vertigo Chicago DVD, it's just an awesome opening.

Vertigo, on the other hand, was not a great opener. Probably better than Breathe though (even though I kind of weirdly like Breathe as an opener).

COBL isn't rock enough to open a show. An encore yes. The show itself? no way.

COBL is, sonically if not lyrically, a deliberate remake of Streets. I find it hard to believe it wasn't memory-holed after Vertigo tour.
