Title: NLOTH-- what's your favorite lines?
Post by: whitewave on March 01, 2009, 09:46:37 AM

Here's mine............

Only love
Only love can leave such a mark

But only love
Only love can heal such a scar
Ö..
Only love unites our hearts

Of vision over visibility

Escape yourself and gravity
Hear me, cease to speak that I may speak

Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot

Itís not a hill, itís a mountain
As we start out the climb
Listen for me, Iíll be shouting
Shouting to the darkness
Squeeze out sparks of light

I gotta stand up to ego but my egoís not really the enemy
Itís like a small child crossing an eight lane highway
On a voyage of discovery

God is love
And love is evolutionís very best day

Who can forgive forgiveness where forgiveness is not
Only the lamb as white as snow

I wasnít gonna buy just anyoneís cockatoo

But Iím running down the road like loose electricity

We are people borne of sound
The songs are in our eyes
Gonna wear them like a crown

Laughter is eternity
If joy is real

Weíre into growing up
Women of the future
Hold the big revelations

Let me in the sound, sound
Meet me in the sound

Choose your enemies carefully Ďcos they will define you

Justify
Til we die
You and I
Will magnify

Women of the future hold the big revelations

Magnificent and Boots are the only 2 songs I've heard.  Trying to abstain until Tuesday

Every night I have the same dream
Iím hatching some plot, scheming some scheme
Oh yeah

Justified till we die
You and I will magnify

Oh, the magnificent

Magnificent

I did not notice the passers-by
And they did not notice me

Hear me, cease to speak that I may speak
Shush now

Lights flash past
Like memories
A speeding head, a speeding heart
Iím being born, a bleeding start
The engines roar, blood-curdling wail
Head first, then foot
Then heart sets sail

Now the wolves are every passing stranger
Every face we cannot know

Every day I die again, and again Iím reborn
Every day I have to find the courage
To walk out into the street
With arms out
Got a love you canít defeat
Neither down nor out
Thereís nothing you have that I need
I can breathe
Breathe now

Choose your enemies carefully Ďcos they will define you
Make them interesting Ďcos in some ways they will mind you
Theyíre not there in the beginning but when your story ends
Gonna last with you longer than your friends

Quite a few lyrics from Magnificent I see - have to say it's my fav on the album

I was born
I was born to sing for you
I didnít have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice
From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise

I was speeding on the subway thru the stations of the cross.

Is anyone else bothered by the "ATM machine" line?  Not that is doesn't sound right but the M in ATM stands for machine, so they are basically saying machine twice.

I was punching in the numbers,at the Automatic Teller Machine...I guess that doesn't work either.

Same here - I'm incredibly fussy about grammar. But I still love the song!

As for favourite lyrics, I have many, but these ones just stand out for me:
"Choose your enemies carefully Ďcause they will define you
Make them interesting Ďcause in some ways they will mind you
Theyíre not there in the beginning but when your story ends
Gonna last with you longer than your friends"

"The roar that lies on the other side of silence"

others that i like:

"Like we had years instead of days"

"Every night I have the same dream,
I'm hatching some plot, scheming some scheme"

Em, it must be an Irish-ism. I've always heard people talk here about the "ATM Machine".

"Going to the ATM" sounds very American and I think we've alot of Americianism by Bono so far!!

Never thought about that before........I'm Italian and lived in Dublin for 6 years (and if that sounds weird know that now I live in Spain :-) ...) and all the Irish people that I know always call it the ATM Machine. So probably true it has to be an irish-ism.

As for my favourite line is from Stand up comedy:
The DNA lottery may have left you smart

Generally Americans just say ATM. we do, however, say PIN number (personal identification number) all the time. at least he didn't use that  ;D

Help; which song contains the following line:
God is love
And love is evolutionís very best day

My favorite line:

There was a time I knew a love divine.
Then came a time I thought it knew me not.
Who can forgive forgiveness when forgiveness is naught?
Only the Lamb as white as snow.

Thanks for the answer.

I like Stand Up Comedy, too.  I'd rate it as 5th or 6th best on this album at this time........but this is a good album.  My two boys (ages 5 and 7) like "Boots" the best and then Stand Up.  They also like Magnificent and Breathe a little bit.  They are good boys!  :)

Vertigo is still their favorite song of all time.

It's not if I believe in love, but if love believes in me--MOS

I am also completely taken with all of Breathe right now; the more I hear the line about traveling salesmen and cockatoos the more I like it.

But I really love "Doc says I'm fine or dying"   seems to sum up all of our fears and uncertainties in one line

These lines from Crazy are pretty cool.

"Every generation gets a chance to change the world
Pity the nation that wonít listen to your boys and girls
ĎCos the sweetest melody is the one we havenít heard
Is it true that perfect love drives out all fear
The right to appear ridiculous is something I hold dear
Oh, but a change of heart comes slow"

'I'm running down the road like loose electricity
While the band in my head plays a striptease'

Most of 'No Line...' but esp..

'I'm a traffic cop, rue du Marais
The sirens are wailing but its me that wants to get away'

'I tied myself with wire
To let the horse run free' - mostly because of Bono's delivery of this opening line

and the rather affecting..

'At the moment of surrender I folded to my knees
I did not notice the passers by and they did not notice me'

Loads of other great lines too.

You know, when I first got the album, I felt that the lyrics were the weakest part. However, going through and reading this thread, I can see a lot of really good ones. I shouldn't let Sexy Boots and all the lyrics on Stand Up Comedy affect the way I feel about the rest of the album :P

My favorites:

"Two souls too smart to be
In the realm of certainty"

All of Unknown Caller

"Let me in the sound"

"Itís not a hill, itís a mountain
As we start out the climb
Listen for me, Iíll be shouting
Shouting to the darkness
Squeeze out sparks of light"

"Every day I die again, and again Iím reborn
Every day I have to find the courage
To walk out into the street
With arms out
Got a love you canít defeat
Neither down nor out
Thereís nothing you have that I need
I can breathe
Breathe now"

"But Iím running down the road like loose electricity"

"Choose your enemies carefully Ďcos they will define you
Make them interesting Ďcos in some ways they will mind you
Theyíre not there in the beginning but when your story ends
Gonna last with you longer than your friends"

Slightly off topic, but the line "Where I came from there were no hills at all" always makes me think of "Where I grew up there weren't many trees
Where there was we'd tear them down
And use them on our enemies"

The lyrics to "Peace on Earth" are overall embarassing, but those specific lines you quoted here are quite good... Goes to show that even at his lowest Bono never lost his touch completely.

"Now the wolves are every passing stranger"

It's a pretty simple line, but I find it so sad and heartbreaking in the context of the song. The combination of the lyric and the way it's sung make that moment very desolate and lonely sounding to me.

'The worst of us are a long drawn out confession
The best of us are geniuses of compression'

The delivery of this line is perfection

'Everyday I have to find the courage to walk out, into a street with arms out, people we meet will not be drowned out, there's nothing you have that I need, I can breathe'

'Every generation gets a chance to change the world Pity the nation that won't listen to your boys and girls'

'Now the wolves are every passing stranger Every face we cannot know' (beautiful edge harmony)

In order:

1.) I found grace inside a sound
I found grace, it was all I found

2.) I've been in every black hole
At the altar of the dark star

3.) The rhythm of my unconsciousness

4.) Every day I die again, and again I'm reborn

5.) Shouting to the darkness
     Squeeze out sparks of light

6.) I was lost between the midnight and the dawning
In a place of no consequence or company

Im really groovin on Crazy Tonight lately

"every sweet tooth needs just a little hit"

"How can you stand next to the truth and not see it"

The stutter step vocal cadence in step with Larry's drumming is infectious, the bassline is awesome, and the Edge's guitar sounds like a backing vocal harmony. Love it.
