Title: New material by end of the year?
Post by: Philaboy1971 on June 16, 2016, 08:16:13 PM
I was just listening tonight to SiriusXM radio on channel 28, the Spectrum. After playing a U2 song, the DJ stated she can't confirm this, but expects to hear new U2 material by the end of the year. Now I've been mislead by on-air DJ's before, but I hope she knows something we don't. Adam just posted a picture in Malibu so maybe they're finishing things up for the new album?
I'll have to look up the DJ's name and post it later.

"They still need another 15-20 producers to nail it down."

Sorry -- I was just laughing at all the comments and had to chime in -- they're awesome.  It's only because we love 'em and want to hear new music.  This should turn into a thread where everyone gives a classic U2 one-liner, or a possibly hypothetical U2 one-liner excuse for an album delay.    I'll start:

"EDGE:  We're still a bit digging in the earth, so to speak.  We currently have approximately 450 songs, enough for 40 albums.  But we're not quite sure in which families the children belong, you know?  You need to find the best families for the children to have the air and the room to grow.  Especially if you're going to lug the children along with you on stage in front of 40,000 people..."

We had 3 records ready to release, but we have to dream it all up again.

I have a feeling the band will release the album on the 26th September 2016, 40 years and 1 day since they were formed.

I was surprised that Adam wrote 'God bless', I'd always thought he, although spiritual, was the aetheist in the group.

I don't know for sure (obviously) but I read somewhere that when he went through rehab for his alcohol abuse, he became a person of faith. Who knows? I hope so!

I believe I heard Bono say that Adam was one of the most spiritual persons he knew, and that he was a man of God, even if it took him a long route to get there.  I suspect Adam's autobiography would be one of the more interesting of the band members.

I agree...he went from the "bad boy" of the band to the man of the year, in my book anyway.

Kind of liked that there was one non religious member of the band.. pretty sure he's still atheist. He's more likely to be referring to him finding peace within an inner dimension or something...

Sometimes people get more religious or back to religion in some form as they get older.

A few songs for a new compilation or a new movie may well be a possible release in 2016. I guess everbody would be happy with it.

I'd even be happy with an EP or a couple stand-alone singles. The band doesn't do those very often, which kind of baffles me.

They are very rigid..

Album, mega tour, album...and repeat.

With the odd deviation over time.

I have never understood why they haven't thrown out a single or ep from nowhere as such or just gone out on a tour for 3 months without it being a part of the usual cycle or just announcing a handful of shows etc.

Everything is so calculated/controlled.

For a band who have of course done many great things they are probably one of the least spontaneous and most controlled bands in history.

Well, being the worlds greatest rock band is more of a business now.

I said they don't do them very often. "Invisible" was great simply because it was so out of the ordinary for them, as was "Ordinary Love". I'd like to see them do things like that more often.

One could make the argument Invisible was the beginning of the same album/tour cycle. The rumor was this was to be the first single of the Danger Mouse album, but due to the tepid reaction they got scared and went back to work bringing in Epworth and Tedder.
Shame.

And due to the tepid reaction of the epworth and Tedder singles, they decided to continue working with them for songs of experience... nobody knows why.

Tedder's Song for Someone was actually the biggest single off SOI.

While Tedder was mentioned in that "they have ATYLCB cover on the wall" interview, it wasn't said specifically he is producing. Or Epworth. As far as I know the only confirmed person working on SOE is Jacknife Lee based on their pictures, and even he might be mixing rather than producing.

Yeh he confirmed that he has only at this point acted as a 'consultant', which doesnt suprise me as One Republic are ready to release an album after promoting their latest single and he has also been working with The Killers on their new album too.

Whilst that may be true it is a bit like saying the beggar at one end of the bridge with 3 quid in his cap and a cardboard box that is a week old is better off than the beggar at the other end with 2.50 in his cap and a box that is two weeks old.

I don't know for sure (obviously) but I read somewhere that when he went through rehab for his alcohol abuse, he became a person of faith. Who knows? I hope so!

Bono said that he was the most Zen person he knows. He's probably ventured into a spiritual aspect but most likely still atheist or maybe agnostic.

Adam said in so interview last year that it's very important about where you put your faith because it could bite you. The way he said it gave a pretty clear indication that he was not a believer, IMO.

I don't think he believes in the Christian god aspect. I think that since his wife is Brazilian that she most likely is Catholic and anything religious going on is most likely her.

I had a dream sometime early this morning that u2 released a new song called 'sunspot' or something similar to that.  It may or may not have been the lead single off of SOE,  in fact it may have been just a very bold song to put out there in the summertime.  I can only describe this song as very aggressive and fast,  with soaring guitars and vocals,  perhaps a bit like the beginning of 'gone' in some places,  though with more urgency.

If you can imagine a giant fireball flying around the sun one minute and then a  massive void the next, this is probably what the song sounded like.  There is a place you can see and hear all of this some distance up and away from the noise of industry and technology.  When you come to this place you will witness the day and night sharing the same space,  stars twinkle into the melting horizon and puffy pastel clouds chase away any shadows of heaven's hidden treasure.

In my dream,  that is.  For I am just a nobody who knows no-one and i have had these dreams before....and they usually turn out wrong or ridiculous...so take it for what its worth.  Just don't look back if they tell you not to....

A very strange thing....I dreamt before the night before the Colorado shooting that I was crouched in an aisle in a theater with loud blasts going on around me.  Then I woke up the next day to the news of the theater shooting.  Something that close to reality never happened to me before.  It was really freaky.

I once heard from someone with some connections and whom I trust that Adam became a person of faith around the time of ATYCLB. This person pointed out that during interviews, Adam was now answering the faith-directed questions -- a marked change from the past. His autobiography indeed would be interesting.

Shame.

That was my understanding as well. Bono even said when they released "Invisible," ""It's great to be back."

Yes Bono said that, but that was simply a reference to performing new material to the public. Invisible was a standalone release, tied to the Red campaign if I recall.  It was not the lead single from a new album, so cannot be comsidered part of this supposed rigid cycle.

While it may further erode this already shaky notion that the band is locked into a perpetual Album - Tour cycle, I'd throw in Night & Day (standalone single), Passengers album (not toured) and HMTMKMKM (standalone single and movie soundtrack contribution)...

Do you not like Adam's wife?

I just get the impression whenever i read a post where you mention her that you don't...

No, but that's not why I said that.

I thought so......wasn't that post that made me ask more an aggregation of previous posts made.

Why don't you like her....it strikes me as a little strange (for want of a better word) to dislike somebody you don't know who has a very, very low public profile....if she was in the public eye more, spoke out more - was a personality so to speak i could understand it more but she isn't so therefore i find it difficult to understand why you would dislike her....

They got a new Persian rug for the studio.

Really ties the room together.

I was surprised that Adam wrote 'God bless', I'd always thought he, although spiritual, was the aetheist in the group.

I can read people (visually) and make a pretty accurate observation of their personalities. I see something and, therefore, have decided why I don't like her.

You're not alone, it is weird (not just to "not like" someone you don't even know, but to have an opinion of them at all). Some people here can get a bit creepy when it comes to their fandom. I get the whole dissecting U2's music thing, but to track their steps on social media and know exactly where they are at all times is just stalker-like in my opinion.

I agree. I think lots of people around here forget that they are people too, they live their own lives and other have things to do that are more important than putting out another album. U2 doesn't owe anybody anything.

Some really awful people photograph well and have eyes that look, well, kind.  Deceptively so, of course.  Some of the pics of the Orlando shooter made him look like a sweet, guy-next-door kind of person.

No standalone singles? Uh, "Invisible."
One could make the argument Invisible was the beginning of the same album/tour cycle. The rumor was this was to be the first single of the Danger Mouse album, but due to the tepid reaction they got scared and went back to work bringing in Epworth and Tedder.

Bono also said that the band were very generous in donating material from their forthcoming album for the red cause. And the song appears on the album as a hidden bonus track.. and the song featured as a centre piece every night on tour as a kind of moment of transcendence from innocence to experience.  Lyrically it encapsulates the whole innocence concept too.. but yeah.. total standalone!

By chance did it sound anything like what Adam posted on Instagram last week?

I don't think so....not enough from Adam's clip to know if it sounded something like a dream or not....which makes me wonder if my dream was even real or a figment of my own very active imagination.  I mean,  how can you actually hear things in a dream?  Except that you do because it has to be that way.

What if death....the afterlife....is one very open ended dream?  I occasionally see people in that state who are no longer in this particular state of consciousness.  I interact with these people,  sometimes with words,  other times just an understanding which is perhaps a higher level of communication altogether.

I know where i am going with this but it's a little bit difficult to put it out there.....maybe that is whats in store for us?

I get what you're saying. You are probably visualizing the sounds and your brain is reinterpreting them as audible so you can comprehend it in a conscious state. The unconscious state is more vivid.

How fair is it to have an opinion of someone like that in hind-sight.  There is always something weird when I see the photos of a shooter or terrorist after they've done their act.

I generally don't have opinions of people without knowing something about them even if it may be by association, which I don't think is particularly correct (i.e. I don't have a high opinion of anyone associated with Donald Trump).

But appearances mean very little, and I don't think people give me a bad vibe or look particularly bad until I know more about them.

From Billboard interview, dated today:

"In March you said that the band hoped to get back on the road sooner rather than later. When is sooner?

That statement still holds true. Short of announcing the plan, which I can’t right now, we’re still on target to get out there sooner rather than later.

You’re calling from the studio. What is the time table for the new album?

We are still busting our ass to try to get it out this year. That’s our plan right now and exactly when, we’re not sure. Now a U2 album plan has been known to be revised (laughs). This is the working assumption. This is our ambition. It could change, but we’re really doing our best to get it out this year. "

I have a feeling the band will release the album on the 26th September 2016, 40 years and 1 day since they were formed.

That would be cool......

My mail is the Tour starts here in Australia in February.

I have a mate who owns a pub in Fitzroy and it was where Bono hung out last time he was in Melbourne.

Anyway; I was in there on Friday night having a swifty after work and he said to me that he had been emailing or instagraming Bono and Bono had said “Keep February free as we will be back down under to paint Good ol’ Melbourne Town a few shades of red” , he was extremely excited.
As anyone knows; once Bono makes a friend; he makes a friend for Life!

So it looks like the February tour will be Down Under.
With the release of new music anytime from November to January.
This makes sense on two fronts; in the past U2 have used Australia to be the springboard to their new work.

Rattle and Hum and Zooropa both debuted here as far as songs were concerned.

And it is the middle of Summer down here in February and U2 love the Australian Summers.

When they tour; they always tour in our Summer.
