Title: Dalton Brothers and other JT nostalgia
Post by: codeguy on January 19, 2017, 08:34:23 PM
so.... not news, just musings.... just wondering how many JT era redos will we see? The dalton brothers opening? Stand by me with the house lights on to open? Bono in a wife beater? f*** the revolution? That they're not playing Tempe, AZ is telling, and they've stated this is a tour for 2017, not 1987, but I just wonder if they can't help themselves?

I'd love to see the Dalton Brothers, and I bet less than 5% of the crowd would still know who they really were, but i just don't see the band bringing back the styles of the first tour other than maybe the odd cowboy hat.  Bono will learn from Sting's mistake of trying to rock a vest in your 50's.

Yeah, I'd love to see a bit of the Dalton Bros, too. And, maybe Edge's old black hat.

And, still hoping to see that Tempe show get scheduled. Yeah, I know...love is blindness. But it could happen.

The reason that the Dalton Bros. worked in 1987 was because we were so far away and there were no big screens. In LA some in the crowd were booing. We weren't that far away, but didn't realize it until part way through because only 1 in our group had binoculars. I guess they could leave the video screen off.

Hmmm...... "Rock and roll stops the traffic!!" on the screen behind the band?

I hope that they use the Vertigo outdoor stage.

Not exactly the Vertigo Tour Stadium setup; but it would make sense to use the giant video screen used on the Vertigo Stadium setup.

Wow...it's like Carrot Top meets Axl Rose.  Seeing that would almost make me nostalgic for Dashboard Confessional.

There is an incredible amount of 'layers' to this video. When watching this it is pretty evident U2 are comedically talented as they are musically. Maybe the Irishman An Tha can really explain what is happening in this video.

I love it that they have such a funny side. Look at Edge and Adam. They aren't hard to miss. It's about not taking yourself too serious for me.

It's funny how, at the height of their "earnest" phase, they were already basically giving a glimpse of the "irony" schtick they'd use on Zoo TV.

It's kind of painful, really.  It's hard to tell if they're paying any kind of honest tribute to American roots music, or making fun of the whole thing.  I'm not sure there's a good case for either.

Of course, Lost Highway is basically a work-in-progress Van Diemen's Land.

Lost Highway is a Hank Williams cover.

I was at that LA show (2nd Coliseum show) and they came out between the BoDeans and the Pretenders. People at the show were booing because you couldn't see it was them from far back. We were on about the 35 yard line, 1/3 of the way up the bowl ($280 this go around, but I digress) and you couldn't tell it was them without binoculars, and we only had 1 set of those among the 8 of us that went.

I stand corrected. Thanks!

Still, you'd almost think Williams should have a credit on VDL. Or that his estate would sue.

Ha!

Never seen that before but I found it amusing.....not all that era was bad then!...

Some nice irony/satire going on - a precursor to what was to follow with the 90's and u2 playing with irony/satire.

I can see why some may struggle with it though.

Oh and by way I was born 'facing the Irish sea' as the song goes but I am no Irishman!
