Title: Bono vs Noel - lads on tour?!
Post by: 73October on September 25, 2017, 03:00:20 PM
Sheesh - I don't know if I can believe his (it's Noel's side of the story!) but it makes for an entertaining read (and flies in the face of 'Bono's brush with mortality', if it's related to his health).
Is this tabloid trash?

From the Irish Mirror (tabloid, sister of The Mirror):

I knew he loved to party, but this sounds like Bono is an alcoholic

Probably not an alcoholic or he wouldn't have been able to perform consistently all these years.  My guess is that Noel is exaggerating.

Meh, it was the hometown gig and they planned it so there'd be two off-days before the next one. Sign me up.

everything Noel says should be taken with a grain of salt, his stories i mean. that's why he's so funny.

There was a day when i would easily have hacked all the partying with u2. But, truth is, im so out of the loop these days, as far as partying goes, that i have become a bit of a lightweight.

This sounds like I'm trash talking but I am good friends with someone who was for quite a few years part of U2s touring "team" - he went around the world with them a few times and he remains close to a number of key people in the U2 camp today.

The stories he tells - especially about Bono - I think it is fair to say that stories like this, even accounting for Noel's liberal pinching of salt are not too far from the truth.

I'm sure that I have heard a similar story from a few years ago where Bono could outdrink Noel (as told by Noel again, I think).  I agree with the pinch of salt but wouldn't be surprised if there was a big after show party.  Not so sure about fitting 75 people round a table at his house though (would you really invite the President of Ireland for a finger buffet?).  More likely that 75 people would fit in the Irish President's gaff in Phoenix Park.

Most definitely, when Oasis supported U2 on the Popmart tour in 1997, Bono and The Edge challenged the Gallagher bros to a drinking game. Liam had to be carried out, while Bono and The Edge seemed almost sober.

Noel's new album sounds fascinating though from the snippets. Can't believe I'm saying this about Noel (whose typically refrained from doing anything out of his comfort zone), it sounds like it has a sonic ambition to it that, dare I say, U2 should have at the moment.

Every Irish person I have ever met apart from one has liked a drink of 12. I'd love a pint or 2 with Bono but I'm not sure I'd make it much further than pint 3 or 4!!  :o

i'd like to drink red wine with Bono- given that his 'allergic' reactions have been well documented.

Bono seems to have an unusual physical constitution.  Has anyone else noticed how many clothes he wears onstage?  He'll go all night long wearing three layers of black garments.  He seems to be impervious to heat....and drink!

i'd like to drink red wine with Bono- given that his 'allergic' reactions have been well documented.

What cracks me up about his "allergy" is that, despite red wine/certain types of alcohol being horrible for his voice/sinuses (according to books/stories I've read) not to mention allegedly knocking him out (see: old Rolling Stone interview with him from 2002), he STILL drinks it and apparently in large quantities. And smokes (or smoked consistently for a long time). Both things that wreck voices and have definitely done some damage to his.

You'd think, given the allergy/damage to his voice, that he'd stop drinking (or just drink a lot less) for the sake of preserving his voice and career. I mean, alcohol is good (or so people say...not a drinker myself for a myriad of reasons) but is it really worth wrecking your voice and otherwise harming your health?

I know, it's very rock and roll to drink and party to excess....but if guys like Myles Kennedy (incredible range and frequently tours with freakin' Slash) can mostly abstain from alcohol and not smoke (to keep his voice healthy), then why can't Bono?

The English do too (or so I'm told from English friends), so I'm surprised Noel seemingly couldn't hold his own with Bono.

Depends on what was being drank. If it was pints of Guiness...i can manage about 10 pts, then my gut feels bloated. Being Scottish, i should be able to keep up. If it was Wine.....a few glasses of that and im anyones lol

I balance you out by drinking a little bit every day! Moderation should be done in moderation.

life's to short to be drunk is my motto. seriously i wasted so much of my time and money drinking.

when i drank even then i hated wine. instant headache. you're supposed to wake up from drinking with a hangover, not start the night with a hangover.

interviews. not stand up specials. and his banter on stage is great. that's what makes his solo tours so strong. his personality.

I don't drink at all and have had maybe one or two alcoholic beverages my entire life (and I'm 28). I just don't like the taste of alcohol, have had that hungover feeling from dehydration before and don't want to have that voluntarily with alcohol, and don't like the feeling of not being totally in control of myself. Not to mention it seems like a waste of money to me, as does frequent Starbucks trips.

I don't have a problem with drinkers, though. Lots of people in my family/friends group drink, so does my boyfriend (and he's used to a higher concentration of alcohol than we Americans are) and it doesn't bug me. I only get annoyed with drinking when people are flat out drunk at a concert and bump into me/spill beer on me constantly.

didn't have my first sip of alcohol <Smirnoff, very sugary malt bev> till 20. didn't get drunk till 21. then i prettyyyyyy much drank till i was like 30. i DID take a 3 year break till i slipped up and drank again, now im 7 years sober. so yea i def dont judge people that drink i just get nauseas when i see alcohol. my parents never drank my wife has a drink like once every 4 months, except not this year we got preg in feb. so ya thats my history that no one asked for hah

Hahaha, Catnip is practically a Class-A drug for felines! I remember my cat Susie's (RIP) insane reaction whenever I gave her some catnip. She was hilarious to watch!

I've never been much of a drinker. Used to have a few drinks when I regularly went nightclubbing in my youth. I had a few hangovers (horrible) but rarely drank to excess. These days I only drink alcohol once in a blue moon really. Will usually get in a bottle of vodka and maybe a Bailey's or an Advocaat at Christmas and on the rare occasion I go out to a restaurant I'll have a glass of something with my meal but otherwise I'm just not that bothered really. The last bottle of anything I bought was last Christmas - a nice bottle of Absinthe! I love it's aniseed taste. :)
