So it looks like they are filming a video. How do we know that it's GOOYOW? How do we know it's even a new song and not yet another Best Thing? But the main question is how you know it's GOOYOW.

You will have to join the Facebook groups. Search for U2 Friends and U2 Tour Head, that's where they have appeared. They are just fan pages and the fans post whatever they find, whether it's accurate or not.

Most of the Facebook groups have been quite reliable in the past.

U2 - Vision Over Visibility, U2NT, U2Valencia, U2start.com - to name a few, all posting that it is, in fact, a video for GOOYOW

So when do they say the single, if this is the single, is going to come out?

Well, then the Amsterdam shooting was much nicer, I would say.
So there are two videos with fans that have been invited. I wonder why they are doing so much "fan interaction" these days.... ?? Is it because the fans are doing it for free? ;)

Great work teasing out this rumor and the clip.

I can't tell from this if I will like this song a lot or not.  I remember hearing poor quality pre-release clips of songs I thought were terrible that came out to be great.  But it's an exciting fall to have all this slowly releasing clips, songs, videos, and live performances from the new album.   So different from SOI, which literally and shockingly dropped without hardly any notice and we had the whole album pristine and complete right away.

Sounds good enough to me. It's u2 in pop mode, but on the side of tasteful and strong on the melody front. It doesn't grate and seems to flow naturally.. that is key for me... better than the last one.

Just unbelievably dull. Coldplay level of blandness here. What an utter dirge.

The Blackout is good, as is The Little Things That Give You Away, which is verging on beautiful. But this tune and The Best Thing really is U2 trying to go as beige as they possible can. How can they live with themselves with songs like this? Pathetic really for a band of this magnitude.

Sounds very breezy and laid back. I thought they'd have followed up The Best Thing with a rocker. We haven't heard enough to judge the whole song, my guess is that the music will probably build additional layers as the song progresses.

"There's a song called "Get Out of Your Own Way" where I've tried to use some biting irony to reflect the anger out on the streets "Fight back, don't take it lying down you've got to bite back. The face of liberty is starting to crack, she had a plan until she got a smack in the mouth and it all went south like freedom. The slaves are looking for someone to lead 'em, the master's looking for someone to need him. The promised land is there for those who need it most and Lincoln's ghost says get out of your own way."

Thanks for posting that.   It's almost like a hymn.   They may have finally done it with this one; perhaps unintentionally.

It doesn't sound forced like Best Thing (there is a song in there somewhere but I'm not quite sure where) and Black Out (surely they could write a chorus for this? The verses work but the 'chorus' is really annoying and gets repeated far too many times).

This sounds like they didn't try too hard - from the clip that's a nice melody and there is some bass and drums in the mix. Considering U2 are lucky enough to have one of the most unique sounding sticksmen in the business they have done a fairly good job of burying him way down in the mix for the past 20 years. Maybe it's just me but quite a few of the drum parts since ATYCLB have been a bit pedestrian - however with all these songs we've heard from SOE it sounds like he's got his mojo back.

Another bland pop offering from the band. I really fear u2 are about to release their weakestst ever album.....based on the 4 songs we have heard.

All 4 songs - from what we've heard - for me are miles better than anything on SOI. Don't think we are looking at a classic but certainly a massive improvement on their last LP.

having been a fan since 1982, i know all too well of the greatness the band is capable of. I genuinely like all the albums to date, some more than others, but having now heard 4 sub standard u2 songs, all from the same album, it doesnt exactly fill me with confidence

I feel a bit the same way, Smee. At the moment I like SOI pretty much. I think it was more the 'idea' and that it was more 'personal' what I liked about it. But I can't get a similair feeling to these new songs (yet), while Blackout is nice.

But I try to wait to burn the album. It took over a year to like SOI. I listened to it many times and said:'nope, U2 is gone.' But after listen to it many times, spread over that year, I had to admit: the album very good. I hope a bit that that's gonna be the case for SOE. Until then (1 December 2018) I try to find all the good stuff in it.

And that's a note to all my co-forum writers  ;). Please, let everyone try to get hyped about the album.

When you see the handful of ridiculously negative posts about this song you can see how he band can't win. No matter what they do, several hate it.

Personally, I'm with he majority who love this. One of the nicest, most naturally melodic tunes they've done in a long time. I don't understand how anyone hates his even if you find it a bit bland. Hate seems harsh. I'm just loving it. Find it way stronger than California.

Too easy.

Low blow. They still haven’t released the other 15-20 versions of the song yet.

Maybe the only version of this song I'm looking forward to is the one that's surrounded by 11 other different songs.

I like Little things

I really like Best thing

I refuse to listen to that horrible version of Blackout

However based on another sketchy YouTube this sounds like the worst of the 4. A bad Killers song, or dare I say it... The Script!!

Ugh, think I just puked in my mouth with that last comparison.

Sounds nothing like the script, or Coldplay or the killers for that matter, thankfully. For me, it's the best of the 4 we've heard so far.

Admittedly, On second listen, I can see the Coldplay/killers hints, but not the script. The chorus sounds better than the verse. It's only a snippet of the song though, so we can't give it a proper review yet.

I'll join you lazy in the shan't be listening again and I have a couple things to add:

1. It's unfortunate that security didn't do a better job of keeping this leak from happening, unless that was leaked intentionally... I don't want to hear this song again until it is released, as Best Thing was ruined by the early leaks, for me anyway. That said, GOOYOW as a song, whether we like it or not, I think has the biggest chance (so far) of being a radio hit today (whatever that means).

2. As I have said, I can listen to 99% of the U2 library and I am a pretty biased fan. As I've noted some of the lyrics to Little Things matched up with then end of my Mom's life bad dementia for 2 years so "anger and grieving" was interesting to start hearing this song 3 days before God finally took her~ But yes, I actually really like the Sinatra nod with that tune. Blackout, echo most here, need to hear it (hopefully) without the crowd noise. Also hoping Best Thing has a longer version on the LP as we all seem to agree 'it ends before it should'.

People forming an opinion is fine. At least wait to hear the whole song before judging it. Judging a song on a crappy video clip off Facebook doesn't do it justice. People are so reactionary with social media. Music is meant to be listened to and digested. Not instantly declared 'bland' from a shi*y recording. I guess it's all subjective in the end.

I haven't spend a ton of time on GOOYOW, but I can tell you this:  the first time I listened to it, I said, "I love it.!" Took awhile for Best Thing to grow on me.  This one was immediate for me.  Very promising start in the four songs we've heard.

I'm tempted to listen to the new clip but I rather reserve judgment until the album is out. I'm sure it sounds great. We have some negative nannies on this forum but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Of the 3 new songs that I have heard, my favorite is The Little Things, The Best Thing and least favorite is The Blackout...Speaking of The Blackout, why is does everyone love this song?? I mean it's pretty good and I like the fact it's a proper Rock tune, but it sounds a little dis-jointed. I have listened to The Blackout about 8 times now, it's still pretty "meh" to me. It's good some nice parts to it (the bridge) and it sounds dark (which I like) but the song doesn't flow. It's a little clunky. I'm sure the album version will be much better.

I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by this tune (from what we can hear).
It's pop, but not the of the dreadful kind. Ten thousand times better than TBT.
Hard to tell from these clips, but it doesn't sound much polished, and that's a good thing. Edge is loud, chimey and clear, it was long missed.

Its like U2 are afraid to try anything too extreme, to reach for something new and exciting and remind everyone why they're one of the most daring and re inventive bands in the last few decades. They've gone so safe. The most interesting and impactful music they do these days would have been considered their more mediocre stuff from previous eras. They've kinda lost it. The newer stuff isn't bad but my god I would never have been drawn to this band if this is what they were churning out back in the late 80's/90s.

U2 becoming an older version of the worst coldplay. This is a nightmare.

I grow up in the late 90´s, early 2000´s, I become fan with Pop hearing stories about U2 transformation from JT to AB, and I was still deeply in love with this band when ATYCLB came out, so is an important albumto me.

And Coldplay´s A rush of blood to the head.... loved the album....

Now I see this two bands making horrible music, and let´s be honest, it´s horrible.... they all look old guys with too much money and no creativity, and for me it´s to sad to have this opinion because  no one will understand how I loved u2 and liked coldplay in the 1997-2009 period.

Wish this place existed around 1991.  Achtung Baby would have gotten absolutely slaughtered by some of you on here and don't even try to deny it

It's a very short part of a song, which was recorded on a mobile phone and some are dismissing the song, dismissing the band and typing things that sound like how you'd feel if a family member died.

It's a song. You either like it or you don't. Not everything has to be Zooropa. I Will Follow is not exactly inspired by Mozart is it?

Considering this is the sound they've been making since 2000, I'm amazed that 17 years later, some people can't quite grasp it

This! What's up with some of you? I'm not one of those guys that blindly love U2, but chill people!! It's a snippet of a song. You guys haven't even heard the other 7-8 remaining songs. I, for one, do not want an album full of songs like "The Blackout". That's right I said it. The Blackout is the weakest song that we heard so far. I like it but the song the song doesn't flow and sounds dis-jointed. A lot of you like it because it's sounds "dark" or it's a "Rocker". Have you guys heard the other rumored song titles like Civilisation, Tightrope, The Lights of Home, American Soul, etc?? Well, guess what? Neither have I.
I want someone on this forum to save this quote because I can GUARANTEE there will be some songs that will appeal to EVERYONE. Some may not like every song but most of you will realize come December 1st, that U2 can still deliver a good album. SOE will not be another JT or AB but it will be a good album...and good is better than crap. Here's a thought...Would you rather not any new U2 material? We are fortunate these boys are still together and putting out decent music. Good or bad, they are still making NEW music. What I'm saying is wait until December 1st before you make any final judgments.  Also, U2 songs always grow on you or give it some time. I have been a member of this forum since 2004. Some of you that bashed No Line or now praising it?? Really?? I'm not a huge fan of that album, but I enjoyed SOI. SOE is going to be good folks. It will be a diverse album but it's going to have some songs for everyone. One more thing and I will get off my soap box: Don't tell me that U2 doesn't take chances or is not experiential any more. Then what about songs like Breathe, Moment of Surrender, Cedars of Lebannon, Raised by Wolves, The Troubles or Sleep Like a Baby Tonight? The songs don't sound very Top 40 or "Dad Rock" to me.
Ok, let's get back to making these forums enjoyable again. Give the boys from the north side of Dublin a chance.

I'm not putting down the song because I like it, but you can't call this a short part/ clip of it. I hear 2 minutes of music. And assuming the song is about 3:30 long...

It is a short part of a song.
I'm going to hazard a guess there is an Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Middle 8, Chorus, Outro.

I didn't hear any intros, verses, middle 8s or outros in that clip

Wrong, Im afraid. At least, and I speak for myself obviously, but hearing 'new' U2 in 1991, was mesmerizing. The best year of my U2 fandom (1983-2017)

What I've heard I like.

Sounds so unlike u2.

The chorus line is very catchy.

Why don't you complain when people praise the song? "Hey, it's only a snippet and poorly recorded! You all should reserve your accolades until you've heard the final version!"

Oh wait.

Bono once said that the hardest thing thing is to make it look spontaneous. To me, this one for sure sounds the most spontaneous of all 4 tracks so far. Edge's guitar is...addictive.

I don't understand why are they trying so hard with big choruses, while so many great U2 songs have no (or barely) chorus.

Well, I'm not complaining

And I actually did say that about The Blackout when there was a snippet posted and I said there's no point in praising it or dismissing it until we've heard the final version. But, obviously you either didn't read that.

Regardless, I don't really care in the grand scheme of things. There are songs I love and there are songs that I don't love and that's all that matters to me

Pretty sure there's a verse and a chorus that can be heard in the snippets I have listened to. The other bits are just the trimmings and won't bee enough to forgive a song if you're not on board with the main sections. Also, intros tend not to exist anymore, not on songs designed to be singles, so I'll wager there's barely any intro..

I don't mind what I heard, so not trying to join a side or anything.. but I think the clip is enough to form some kind of opinion on the song as the crooks of it are there to be heard.

I heard a verse, bridge, chorus, solo and outro in the longer video... the intro could be anything from an abrupt start like YTBTAM or slow like California. But this is what the majority of the song sounds like. The dynamic won't change. And the quality is decent. I think most people can form a truthful opinion based on this

The video linked above features a snippet of what sounds pretty reliably U2-ish, and video of the band filming the music video.

Pretty upbeat, albeit a little "safe"--What do you guys think?

I think it's also worth noting that the audio is from the speakers, and the band are pretend playing to it( besides the drums). You can tell when Bonos not singing or there's additional instruments. While there is always room for editing, it's likely this is the the mix and audio we'all hear on the album

Funny, I was going to say four songs in and I already see more to work with than on the last couple of albums. To each their own I guess, but your "absolute lead balloon" might be a tad dramatic.

And he's on fire!

I'm really loving this song, it's my favourite so far. Especially how the band took the lyrics to heart and got out of their own way when playing it, this is the most loose I've heard them play on a studio track for a while, the song flows so well and doesn't sound like it's had a dozen producers and two dozen mixes. It's a summer breeze!

And it reminds me so much of The Cure for some odd reason.

My fear is that we are hearing the songs which will be used to showcase the album & they are 3 star songs at best.
Not exactly WOWY-Still-Streets as we got on The Joshua Tree.
Or The Fly-Mysterious Ways-One.

We got 3 star tracks for another 3 star album.

Not really...

We didn't get RTSS, Bullet, Mothers, OTH as singles or previews of them before the JT.
Likewise, we didn't get Ultraviolet, Acrobat, Horses, Love Is Blindness to showcase AB.

We got Boots off No Line and there were far better songs on there than that, same with The Miracle so, I'm not understanding your point here

Personally I prefer U2 in 'serious' darker mode. If this album is a flop its probably going to be because of Ryan Tedder. So far Little Things is the best track.

The references to JT and AB are getting tiresome. We can't expect a rabbit to be pulled out of a hat. Expectations need to be realistic. We will end up with an ok album, with something for everyone.

I'm sort of surprised that nobody has mentioned the Fleetwood Mac vibe to the song.  All the way down to the "way..." at the end of the chorus.  Makes sense, as I seem to remember Adam Clayton saying something about Fleetwood Mac in an interview a few months ago.

Yep.

I find it bizarre if I'm honest. As I said earlier, this is the sound they've been recording for the last 17 years so, I'm not sure why people are expecting another AB. I'm sure if Streets came out now, this place would pan it.

"Unimaginative bass lines"
"Drums pattern is weak"
"Oh great, yet more delay on The Edge's guitar"

As I said before, Achtung Baby would have been slaughtered if this place existed back in 1991

I think it’s hard to comment on the album so early. More of a “promising” or “concerning” stage. The band has moved on to a whole new world of marketing so it’s hard to say the prognosis.  I can say that as with most bands that take the LP approach to albums as opposed to a few singles and filler

IMHO....
The songs seem to vibe well. The keys fit B mans current voice well, and he’s not straining. I’m excited.

Pure bo****ks. How can you make a statement like that based on three songs and one 30 sec clip? I think they’re all much stronger than what they’ve done in a long time barring maybe YTBTAM.

For goodness sake. In your first sentence, You question how anyone can form an opinion based on three songs and then one 30 sec clip. Then in your second sentence, you admit you can form an opinion, and the songs are fabulous. LOL

Make your mind up.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I question how an opinion can be formed on the whole album based on three songs einstein.

You have. Why can't people form a negative opinion? You only seem to believe that people can form positive opinions.

Don't think it's the fact that it's a negative opinion. We're all allowed like/hate what we want...

It's the general sweeping remark of "absolute led balloon" which is questionable.

Because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's going to be a flop. Just like the way it doesn't mean it's going to become a massive hit because I like The Little Things and The Blackout.

There are nearly 7 billion people in this world....There is a possibility those 7 billion others might not think what me and you think about it

I know that. But there are MANY posters on here that have determined the ALBUM is going to be the best they have released since the 90's...or at least ATYCLB. People who are saying that are basing that assumption, their opinion, from the same material that has been heard by people who think the opposite. That's what people who are not as excited about the new release based on the 4 songs heard are trying to point out. People who love U2's music, no matter the quality (and there are many on this forum) do not like, and can not take criticism of 'their' band!

And for the record - I have heard 3 OK songs and only one dud so far from the upcoming album. I quite like what I'm hearing so far. But its far from their best work.

For a bunch of 57 year old guys, let's let them do what works at this point.  The Little Things is spot on for Bono to sing Sinatra style polishing off some Bourbon in a smoky club.  The other tracks are surprisingly upbeat and seem to have a great attention to detail.

Exactly. This objection that "we've only heard a small, poorly-recorded portion" is a ruse. It's people disliking the song and stating their opinion that they're objecting to. IOW, we can state opinions about what we've heard of SOE as long as those opinions are positive. If they're not, we get shamed and asked to leave the forum.

Based on what I have heard so far, I believe it's going to be their best album since POP or All That You Leave Behind. Again, I am waiting for the official release of the album on December 1st but so far the new songs sound very good to me.

The references to JT and AB are getting tiresome. We can't expect a rabbit to be pulled out of a hat. Expectations need to be realistic. We will end up with an ok album, with something for everyone.

As I said before, Achtung Baby would have been slaughtered if this place existed back in 1991
"What happened to good old-fashioned rock, not this techno crud!"

Im the polar opposite form you. I really like SoI (apart from The Miracle). I think its a strong collection of songs

I like every single one of their albums, I almost loved SOI, and I KNOW I'm going to love SOE!

Are we sure it's not another "Best thing" video?

Too easy.

Low blow. They still haven’t released the other 15-20 versions of the song yet.
;D
Maybe the only version of this song I'm looking forward to is the one that's surrounded by 11 other different songs.
Ha! I agree!

The Blackout was somewhat high quality, if you didn't like that here's a better version

You can sing the chorus melody of YTBTAM over the backing track of GOOYOW and it fits perfectly. They are basically interchangeable.

TBTAM was very straight forward... Fine but nothing special really.  Honestly the acoustic version had more depth to it, simply because of the restraint of Bono's vocal.  This track has more too it.... Edge sounds very ethereal, the drums are good... and the lyrics are better.  Even if it is pop, it's still good pop.

I agree that the acoustic "Best Thing" was the best.  You did a good job of describing why it appealed to me more than the other versions.

Oh dear...

Four songs in and it's looking like this is going to be an absolute led balloon.

Who knows, it could be their best work since Pop?
It could be their worst since October?

What I will say is, I love The Little Things very much and the other three have choruses that I can't get out of my f**king head, to the point where it's annoying, so I don't think it'll be a bad album....Maybe I'm wrong :D

I will also say that if anyone on here is expecting them to knock out another AB, whilst putting on a tour for it that risks bankruptcy and they magically go back to being 28 years of age, as The Edge comes up with all these weird and new guitar sounds, needs a re-think

Yes, this is absolutely it.  Choruses/melodies that I repeat in my head every time I roll over in bed.  I think that's a good sign.  Definite ear worms.

The chorus sounds very similar to the outro in Beautiful Day.  But like I said, it sounds fun as f^ck.  And it sounds and feels like they like it too.  I'm excited about the new album.  Little Things will really take off live when it's been properly rehearsed as a contextual piece, and not a drop-off as it was on JT - same with Best Thing.  Blackout is okay, and that's where it ends for me.  I think my own excitement has been tamed a bit by the fact it's nearly a re-write of Crystal Ballroom.  I love Edge's guitar work in the middle 8, but I HATE the lyrics - esp. the much maligned rhymes of zack and back, etc.  Perhaps it's an intentional rub from Bono, and maybe it will make more sense in the context of the complete album.  Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing AND hearing this album live.

It's hard to understand why so many people are being so critical... It sounds a lot like Beautiful Day. In fact, the drum beat and feel is almost the same...  Everybody loves Beautiful Day when it roars through the stadium PA!  I'm sure everyone will be hopping up and down when GOOYOW opens the next tour!

If you don't want the opinions and insights of U2 fans you disagree with, maybe start your own forum and only invite people who love Bono's hair and sunglasses?

Wow, there's a great deal to unpack in those lyrics.  It's almost as though Bono is writing to America...the references to slaves/masters, Lincoln, etc.  Then there could also be a broader meaning of slave/master such as humans/Lord.  He is such a deep lyricist with so many layers/elements to his songs.

I'm not overly fussed about Little Things but I'm waiting to hear the finished album version before I form an opinion. Even if I dont end up liking it it doesn't mean I'm going to start calling for the band to retire like some do.

... at least wait until the album comes out to complain.

Then YOU wait until the album comes out to cheer. Fair?

OR, we all just let other people talk without seeking to police them constantly.
Can we talk about how good all the songs are separately?

Or how bad they are. It's not up to you or me.

Yep I mentioned Fleetwood Mac earlier....... lawsuit?

It’s just got a Fleetwood Mac vibe and the chorus of both end with the word “way.”  I mean, it’s not a note-for-note ripoff like they did when they stole from that poor sap on “The Fly.”  ;)

Then I would suggest reporting individual comments to the mods if you feel like they are being unnecessarily mean-spirited. That's what the mod team is there for, and they do a great job.

PS - I really like The Blackout. But since I've not yet heard the official version I hope that's okay.  ;)

If you've not liked anything U2 have done since 1991, 93, 97, 2000 then why are you still here?

Not sure if this one was previously posted in this discussion, but someone edited together a couple clips.  I think.  Could be different views of same clip.

I like the chorus.  Sure sounds like the end of Beautiful Day throughout, though.

It seems like a very NICE U2 song, so all we can surmise at this point is two nice songs (Own Way & Best Thing) and two songs tinged with melancholy or darkness (Little Things, Blackout).

So far, three out of four songs seem rather chorus-heavy.

And for the record, I have no problem with anyone who thinks they're going to hate the album based on what they've heard or anyone who thinks they're going to love the album based on what they've heard.

But one thing is true: we haven't heard THE ALBUM yet, so wherever you stand on this none of us has the full picture yet.

Already posted, the solo is very "walk on"

Oh dear...

Four songs in and it's looking like this is going to be an absolute led balloon.

Funny, I was going to say four songs in and I already see more to work with than on the last couple of albums. To each their own I guess, but your "absolute lead balloon" might be a tad dramatic.

The misspelling was intentional.
I liked SOE, a bit overproduced but some well crafted songs throughout.

I find The Little Things boring and the other three songs detestable. I've never really felt that way about U2 music before.

Full disclosure - I'm still not that high on the Blackout. I think it'll really benefit from proper sound on the album, but it's just not clicking for me for a lot of reasons. I find it a bit clunky both lyrically and melodically and I find the chorus is just bland.

As for the other three, I'd have trouble rating them based on not having heard all of them in full, but I'm leaning towards Get Out of Your Own Way as the best. And here's my reasoning: There seems to be a backlash against simple melodies, but in my opinion, U2's greatness came from their command of simple melodies. From Pride and Bad to the entire Joshua Tree, it's what they do best. The Best Thing and Get Out may not have some of the atmospheric texture and nuance of those great tracks, but at least it's a return to some pretty strong melody which, in my opinion, has really been lacking in the last couple of albums.

For this commenter, if U2 has re-discovered a knack for finding melody, I'm happy. I've given up on them writing another Achtung Baby.

Hard to get the full picture for the song (I think the YT clip) is the perhaps mainly the last 90 seconds of the song, but I like it so far.  The video vibes fit the song too, which is of optimism, joy and letting go.

As several have already said, its hard to please everybody.   But I am optimistic on SOE based on what I've heard.   Remember, we've only heard some parts of 1/3 of the album (and at that only a studio version for one out of 11 or 12 songs).   Imagine rating Achtung on just listening to Mysterious Ways, live versions of Zoo Station and Tryin to Throw Your Arms Around the World, and a 90 second clip of a video shoot of Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.   Doing so wouldn't allow for all full picture, story, intricacies, and essential album tracks that AB was so heavy on.   Not saying SOE will be as great as AB -- that would be a near impossible feat, but I think its way too early to deride the album and write it off -- but if people want to, that's obviously their right (you either dig what you hear, or you don't).

I have a 3 listen rule personally. Can be difficult to judge on a first listen, but if by the 3rd there's no spark beginning to emerge then it's adios amigo.

This is one of the smartest posts I've read on here in a long time.  While I disagree, I think part of the reason SOI was panned critically was due to a lack of simplistic melody in favor of incessant wailing and shouting. Most of the songs people did like about the album seemed focused on simpler melody lines (i.e. Song for Someone, Sleep Like a Baby, Troubles, etc).  And even some of those modulated from lows to highs that were too complex to really dig into.  I really enjoyed the wailing and shouting, esp. in Joey Ramone, Volcano, and Raised by Wolves.  Even Achtung Baby at it's most instrumentally complex zoned in on simplistic melody (i.e. One, Zoo Station, Throw Your Arms).  It plays to Bono's strength as a vocalist.  He was not blessed with the  gifts of Mariah Carey and Axl Rose to jump octaves aerobically.  When he tries, as he did on SOI, it only exposes the weaknesses.  But, that's like my opinion. Man.

Also, a Halloween release would make sense given they are celebrating Day of the Dead in the video.

First, thanks. And second, well said.

Your point about Bono's vocals is right on the money. When he has a strong melody to play with, the song dictates his vocals and he flows with it much more naturally. When he doesn't have that simple, base melody, he tries to force his vocals upon the song and the results are often quite mixed. It's like he knows the melody isn't the strongest, but he likes the idea of the song so he grinds it out as best he can.

U2 are in their element with natural, nice melodies.

You can sing the chorus melody of YTBTAM over the backing track of GOOYOW and it fits perfectly. They are basically interchangeable.
That's good!

Eh, they're too samey-samey, for my taste. I'm not sure it's wise to release back-to-back singles that are similar enough to have interchangeable melodies.

Hopefully this turns out to be as good as the small part of it reflects.    I don't recall hearing anything as catchy from them since that 30 second snippet of Stuck was released just prior to the ATYCLB release.

Assuming this wasn't intentional, I wish they would do a better job of keeping these things from leaking ahead of time.

I have a very interesting story about my GOOYOW experience.
The day I found out there was a leak video, I was like, "I want a totally new song to me!"
Day 2, I was like "screw it, I'll just listen to the chorus."
And I did.
It was a good decision.
But I will not listen to the rest.
Because I need a reason to hype.

After hearing Best Thing twice now on local top 40 radio (one HotAC one top 40), my guess is they/we will get their wish for a hit from this LP, GOOYOW might be it...

All this 'early exposure' to the new songs is overwhelming...now I have this additional thought:

I bet 100% of this forum would pay an almost unknown capped amount to get an LP that where all these new songs are at their earliest stages of development. Like a Mercy...how these songs are true gems before all the tinkering happens...just 4 guys in a room recording 12 new songs with a few different producers mixing in another room overnight and the download made available at 8am Dublin time the next day.
...oops, woke up ;)

GOOYOW is a very ATYCLB tune.... It would fit well on that record.  Someone go back in time and delete Grace from that record and replace it with this!

True. I would pay a lot to hear the full Danger Mouse version of SoI.

Now that I think about it, the chorus does kinda sound like ATYCLB.

Do you think there is a chance of a physical release of the singles with b side?
Maybe for Record Store Day.
A few years ago (if I remember correctly in 2013) island said they won't release singles anymore unless it's for something special. RSD and Black Friday and gifts are special

Yes, golden times of singles are gone ....

you should not have to listen to an album for a whole year to try and force yourself to like it...band`s last album was a load of B.S.....the 4 songs we have so far sound a bit better(although this wouldnt be hard) although still incredibly bland...they can still do it as recent songs like Invisible and Ordinary Love prove but if the path they are now treading on leads to this pop pap we are being subjected to i would rather they chucked it

haha...I can't disagree more and to be honest I'm done arguing with people about their new work...its like "hey, you don't like it? I don't give a $#!t because I do and it will make it easier for me to get seats to their concerts" So I hope everyone hates it. Each hater is one less person I have to fight for tickets. Please...can ALL OF YOU hate all of their new music!!!! Pretty please!!!

LMAO, that's the spirit! I don't think this forum is a great barometer of what the actual response to the album is going to be, but I'm right there with you about tickets after getting stuck with a bunch of casuals for JT last month. Go sit and be quiet at some other show, I'm freaking out here!  ;D
Casuals?!? I went to JT 30!

not sure what ur getting at, hopefully something good...but I've been a fan for almost 30 years, so I really couldn't care less if people like it or not...I do and in the end that is all that matters to me.  :D

I'm just saying there seemed to be a lot of people where I was sitting who probably wouldn't have come if it hadn't been centered on JT and who didn't seem particularly affected by the whole thing, which was the only bothersome part of my experience. I felt pressured to sit a lot and sometimes felt self-conscious because of them, so I hope they don't show up again and we can all get the tickets we want. Not calling anyone here casuals, lol. Sometimes my imaginary dialogues get away from me.  ;D

For my 2nd show this season, I got seats in the lower bowl with all the other oldsters.  My husband and I stood for the entire concert.  Everyone around us stood for Side 1 of JT and they all sat for Side 2.  Weirdest thing.  Once JT was over, they all stood up again.  I much prefer to be in GA even if my view was no where near as good.

As for being pressured to sit, I told my husband--I don't sit for U2 concerts.  And I do not leave until the house lights are up.  Ever.  So I guess if I annoyed people by standing and being crazy, so be it.

If you saw u2 once this summer only because they were doing JT and not because it was u2!!!  then yes I consider you a casual fan. I'm not saying you're not a fan. But the fact it was Joshua tree definitely brought out a lot of "i don't like their new stuff but I loved u2 back then" fans. Those people don't care about what they're doing right now. The real die hands are the ones who went to IE and will go to EI. I spoke to so many fans who dismissed that tour and said they didn't bother going to it. Seems more casual than anything to me. I consider everyone on this forum to be a die hard simply because we all care about what the band is still up to and not just "a Saturday date night" forget it happened act. And of course there's the general public (not really fans) who go to these concerts to say they went.

I don't know whether or not I have heard the verses yet, is the part about Lincoln's ghost in the verses? If so I like the chorus AND the verses.

Lyrically speaking, the verses are fine. I'm talking about the melody.

But... someone that was a hard-core fan back in the 80's or 90's that fell out of love with their later material, can still genuinely be just as much a fan of the band... just fans of old u2.. They grabbed the opportunity to see their favourite album played again, and probably loved the show more than most... I don't understand the casual fan comments... there are just fans. And there are non fans that go to see them for the experience, or because they are on a list of acts they aught to see, or because they were bored and looking for something to do on a Thursday night.

There does not need to be this pecking order, about who are the true more deserving fans..
Not directed aware at you monopoly,I read this stuff all the time.

Bono frequently references Lincoln in interviews. Clearly a personal hero for Bono.

I sat out of JT30 tour ... I went to three shows on the IE tour ... I'll probably go to two shows on the next tour ... I like the element of surprise at a gig ... it's no fun when you know the running order of 11 songs straight. I hope this fad of celebrating classic albums dies of death soon. It so lame. The audience/promoters/labels shouldn't be dictating the set list. Let the artist be the artist.

Seriously? You sat it out for that reason?  I went and to be honest it was just like any other u2 gig. Distinctly u2, big event feel and they were in fine form. I enjoyed it just like any other tour once there.
Plus all tours and set lists predictable if you follow sites like this one.

I saw it 3 times and only because it surprised me how much I enjoyed it. My wife is a casual fan and she loved it - all 3 times. Red Hill Mining Town and Trip took on a whole new life I hadn’t heard before IMHO.

Yeah I've seen a couple of bands do these album tours and I find it lame because sometimes when a band sets out on tour they might have ideas halfway through the tour. Happy accidents and what not. When you're contractually bound The a setlist it removes that. Like take 360 tour for example that evolved beyond belief as it progressed. I'd rather a band be able to drop a song one night if they so wished. I want the band to play what they want to play in that moment. Not be sent out promoting former glories.

So I'm a tour latecomer (started at first 360 leg).  However, JT2017 has been my favorite tour, even if I also loved SOI because it was more intimate.  There was something about hearing so many of my all time favorite U2 tunes, including the ones I've always wanted to hear live (One Tree Hill, Running), and especially including the ones that never were my favorites on the album (Exit), but that absolutely blew me away live.  Same with Mothers.  So, well worth going to twice.
