No problem!  Yes lets hope!  But even if they don't play it tonight, I really think it's going to happen at some point soon.  The e-stage songs rotate and I think it'll at least be in rotation there. I hope!

lmao.  I was just going to post the same thing.  27 is considered few now.  I think that 27 is more than a typical U2 show.  Have not gone and looked but 27 sounds good to me.

Well, I think Bomb bombed, so. ABOY sounds like generic trash to me. Won't ruin the show!!! But why not Red Flag Day???

Iris is sounding amaaaaaazing.
Title: Re: **SPOILERS** Tulsa #U2eiTour Opening Night Official Thread
Post by: Stateless on May 02, 2018, 08:08:23 PM
Wow. Iris sounds better than it was on the last tour.  I always liked how songs can change, sometimes even a little between different tours. While it is not a big departure, it just sounds more solid.  My wife also loves this song, so she was smiling when I told her they just started playing it.

I know the reprise sucks for you guys but fwiw I missed i&e and am thrilled to get this chance again.

I am pretty happy with the SOI songs that have been kept in. Seems they will do the SBS and RBW thing again which I think they should have changed up, but otherwise very happy to get Cedarwood, Iris, SFS.
Title: Re: **SPOILERS** Tulsa #U2eiTour Opening Night Official Thread
Post by: Stateless on May 02, 2018, 08:21:37 PM
Seems like the middle of the show is a 100% repeat of the last I&E tour.  Do wish it was mixed up a little with different songs however.  Love the songs they play.  I saw 3 I&E shows on the last tour, loved that section, but 3 years later to have the same exact songs, same order and most likely same on-stage production I would of wanted a little change.  Still loving the show so far (listening to audio).

I think the set has worked perfectly so far! I really need to SEE the opening few in good quality visual again but it looks like it's all in from the start with the screen and other new elements.

Bono is sounding good but I notice he's not reaching for certain notes on IWF and SBS. So it's interesting to see where his voice has changed, because it's not like he's not delivering within his current range.

I feel like he will still tackle some of those notes on a TV appearance where it's just 1-2 songs on 1 night, as opposed to killing his voice on a tour.

And it's not just a matter of a high note, I guess - but not doing his screams.

Honestly those were probably harder to do than I realized. The things we take for granted.

Edge is killing RBW.

Hmm, they went with UTEOTW rather than Horses.

Even with the 100% repeat of the middle section (Iris, Cedar, SBS, RBW) am pretty damn impressed.  Wild Horses and Acrobat sounded great and they are playing a bit more songs that usual for U2.  Loving it!  Can't wait for the pair of shows in Vega$!!!

BTW, I like 13 as closer

I don't mind the acoustic version of it, it's a nice mellow way to recover from the intensity of Acrobat. Summer of Love would be good in this spot

I agree. Summer of Love seems to be such a forgotten song, and it deserves more attention.

Really interesting set-list. Hard to believe there was no Streets or WOWY but it seems to me all the better for their absence. I guess when you feel compelled to have certain songs in there it diminishes your choice in terms of other songs to play both in their slots but also they dictate to a certain extent the songs that come before and after them in terms of the who dynamic of the show.

Hope this set-list survives pretty much intact for the European leg. It's good to see plenty from the new album and, of course, Acrobat and Wild Horses. Glad ..End of the World is still there too. Also The Ocean will be great to hear and it is nice to see a nod to Pop with SATS.

I suppose I Will Follow will get chopped and changed with Electric Co in due course and that's cool.

Interesting times...

Hello everyone.

I have read and considered the most of the opinions about the setlist of the U2 E+I Tour opening gig and I feel good that no one changed my view about it.

I am really happy that the band, for the first time after so many years, have chosen to "sacrifice" some great and classic hits like Streets and WOWY to give themselves and the fans some fresh air. Some of U2 fans do not (want to) know that U2 are not only hits. U2 can make a f****ng awesome setlist WITHOUT hits.

Yes, they can do a top show without WOWY, Streets, Beautiful Day, Vertigo etc etc. You do not need "and you give yourself away" to break your heart in a U2 gig.

There are many songs that we will never being bored to listen to. But I think it was a time that we, the fans, needed something new. Not something new from the new album. Something new from the past. Acrobat is the best gift from the glorious U2 past.

It is really nice to watch U2 in 2018 remembering that their history is not dead. Some songs "died" just a few years after their release. U2 make them being reborn. Staring At The Sun is one of them and of course Wild Horses.

Finally, I totally agree with the full rest of "The Joshua Tree" album. They were playing it ALL for 5 months until October 2017 (just 6 months ago). It would be a monotonous mistake if they played it again (except of some songs like Exit).

I hope they will give more chances to the 90s, 'cause "we need it now..."

Thanks for your time. Cheers from Greece. Mario

Like it or not, those "fillers" are in there because they work well live. Time and again. They get the crowd moving and balance out the more serious stuff.

As for too much stuff from the last two albums, well it is the Experience and Innocence tour. They've always been about playing their new stuff.

Last night was most certainly NOT a snooze fest! There certainly is no comparison between this show and past shows. It definitely was about the experience and was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The crowd was definitely not bored like I’ve seen in other posts. It was awesome seeing songs live that I’ve never seen performed before, the augmented reality portion was cool, the stage setup was eye-popping, and over all it was a great “experience”. I wasn’t expecting a greatest hits show and was actually surprised that so many older songs were played. Wish I could go to another show!

To anyone saying the crowd looked bored, keep in mind the entire state was under the threat of a tornado outbreak so yes, people did have to keep one eye on what was going on outside.

For what it’s worth, here are my thoughts: overall, I’m a fan of this. If you tabulate the different songs from their different decades, there were 5 songs from the 80s, 5 songs from the 90s, and 5 songs from the 00s (6 if you count the HMTMKMKM intermission), w the rest coming from the two albums that are backing this tour.

In terms of the tipping their cap to their more classic cannon, this strikes me as being a fair balance. And, I say this as one who does thing that 13 (There Is A Light) would segue perfectly into Streets, which would be a really badass, high energy note to end on, maybe even w Bono giving some cheesy line of going home to “where the streets have no name”.

In terms of my quibbles: I hate the MacPhisto throwback. Don’t get be wrong: I don’t hate the IDEA of their doing this; I just hate the execution of it. I missed the ZooTV tour, and my exposure to the onstage character stems from both their Sydney dvd and live bootlegs. While he made good, smart, thought provoking points back then, it was done in such a cheeky way that it was wildly entertaining and hilarious, all at the same time. Last night wasn’t MacPhisto, last night was a caricature of The Joker, if he’d had a baby with the devil, or maybe Pennywise, the demonic clown from It. No humor, no wit, just more blatant leftist politicking from the band. And, I say this as someone who generally agrees w their political leanings (emphasis on the “general”; if the moderators wouldn’t ban me for it, I’d happily write up a treatise to summarize where I disagree). As they’ve gotten older, it has, sadly, become more and more apparent of how much of an echo chamber they seem to live in.

All in all, I was blown away by the performance, the song selection (though, what happened to The Showman?). With that said, I do think that one has a right to gripe about having not even a single song from Joshua Tree, being their top selling album of all time, if they have paid for those egregiously overpriced $325 tickets.

About the crowd - listening last night on mixlr, I felt like the crowd was ecstatic.

Watching on YT this morning - crowd seemed subdued.

Which is the truth, I don't know.

Re MacPhisto, that was a true surprise. I don't know yet what to think of the execution, but I sense it was probably genius and the right thing. I haven't wrapped my head around it yet but a few things occur. 1992 MacPhisto really can't come back. We could try to shoehorn him into 2018 Bono, but no. Also, if you were standing in 1992 and seeing the future of MacPhisto decades later, would you see him as unchanged except for the wrinkles? No. He was going to burn up. Also I think times have changed in a way where the joking is over.

MacPhisto was a shiny, vain man, and now his mask has come off.

I think I gotta read Screwtape Letters.

I don't see them swapping Vertigo, nor putting in Daddy's Gonna Pay, but that would be awesome! Discotheque going in for Elevation would be more likely, considering they have dabbled with Discotheque previously and the two songs serve almost the same purpose except Elevation is shorter and more immediate.

Hey everyone! First time poster, longtime fan (also an admittedly recent lurker here, as rumors of the current tour have emerged). Nice to virtually meet everyone.

Wanted to throw out my .02 about what the videos I've seen/posts I've read regarding opening night, since I agree with a lot of what I've read from all of you...

Let's start with this... Acrobat was crushed. I wasn't there last night, but based on the videos that are available, I don't know if anyone can argue that. And that song's presence (along with what sounds like was a great rendition of Horses) may be enough to get me to splurge on a ticket in Chicago - hoping it stays in the set.

I've only seen the band once (U2 360 tour in Chicago - my entire family went and it's a show I'll always remember). It's not that I don't do my best to get to the shows. I wish I could be at every single one in my area. But I'm a grade school music teacher and a musician on the side, so $300+ for a prime ticket to a show is a bit steep, blah blah blah...excuses. Whatever.

Anyways, the unique aspects of this setlist may get me to pull the trigger on some tickets in the secondary market (whatever's available and affordable over the next few weeks). I think most of us, while it may be a bit on the selfish side, would take Acrobat and Horses over Streets and WOWY.

However, I also look at that setlist and - without any representation from their "big album" - it seems almost incomplete or a little empty. I read that some people were walking out and/or disappointed with the set, which could have been someone sick of the politicking or a more casual fan upset at the absence of songs that probably intrigued him/her about the band in the first place. At $200-$325, I honestly can't blame them for that second reason.

Now, the production looked pretty stunning and the length of the set is very respectable. 27 songs. Props.

But, trim some of the fat and filler that's just there for the sake of being there, and all of a sudden, you still have a fresh show AND you're appealing to casual fans and/or the ones that don't get out to every tour.

1. Unless I missed something, you don't need Song For Someone and 13. Maybe, it's a tie-in to the narrative, but pick one or the other.
2. All Because of You, it's not needed. Cool that it's back 12 years later, but I feel like that's the only purpose it has. Just to be there for "rarity" purposes.
3. You're the Best Thing About Me... great single, loved it when I first heard it, but yikes...that acoustic version... maybe the sound quality was bad on the video, but it sounded flat and pointless. Axe it and throw in Little Things, imo.

End of the rant. Everyone enjoy St. Louis tomorrow. Maybe I'll see you in Chicago. Cheers!

Great setlist. Very happy with the mix of old and new. Would still prefer to have a few TJT songs survive the last tour (In God's Country, One Tree Hill, Exit), but having Acrobat and WGRYWH is solid.

Great, now that U2 have got the length of the show right, they give us a horrible setlist.  Just too many snoozing parts.

That whole section from I Will Follow to UTEOTW is just going to test peoples patience.  That's a big chunck of concert time just to get a rehash of 2015.  News flash to U2: Probably about 95 percent of the audience has seen this already and probably multiple times in 2015.  We know that part of the story.  Don't rehash.  And we got to listen to that horrible version of SBS.

Then they have that acoustic set that is going to put people asleep again.  Great time to take pee break and get some beer.  Can't believe they are not playing Best Thing full band.  Leave it to U2 to butcher songs.  This version is even more horrendous than SBS.
Even on I&E, they butchered EBW.  Really wanted to hear that full band electric.

Then, what a horrible choice of closing with 13.  I can just see mass exodus of people towards the exits on this one.
Really hope U2 change this up by Montreal.

One of the best setlists I've seen from U2 in ages. The energy coming from that show was phenomenal.

^almost agree boomboom. 13 will bring me to my knees crying. But like ballads, one must hear the high quality album version first to get the full beauty impact. People hearing 13 for the first time live it can be a snoozer.

I've accepted that with U2 shows, they "waste" 1/3 of setlist on songs I could take or leave. Like the crowd warmers Desire and Pride. How many times have I heard that. So decided it's not worth an ei ticket and travel this year.

I dont have a problem with what they are omitting and what they have added is quite refreshing in some ways.

But they set out with a clear identity for an "innocence and experience" tour 3 years ago. They then had to revise that concept as the 2nd album wasnt available and the two night pair of shows wasnt workable.

The elephant in the room for me is that they are now essentially revisiting the original concept to deliver it in a way they werent able to last time, rather than it being a 2nd act of some sort.

It is what it is, they couldnt do it quite as they might have wanted 3 years ago, but to bring a whole segment of it back again (6 songs, 25 mins or whatever), with almost identical visuals too, is pretty weak. Im fine with the idea of using the same staging/screen and Im sure there is a large variation on the general concept from what was put forward 3 years ago, but they should be able to put across a concept without needing to retread the exact same visuals and songs, in the exact same order too- surely there should be some variation given the cost of the tickets?

Imagine the reaction if they had got to the middle of the show and declared the midpoint of innocence and experience as the Joshua Tree phase. Then proceeded to play the first 6 songs from the JT in order, with the exact same visuals as the shows last summer?

Im not particularly buying the idea to drop the JT songs as a creative, liberating decision first and foremost either. Id imagine the reason is more about trying to distance this tour as much as possible from the tour that happened last year, to make sure they dont lose a big chunk of their more transient audience.

I think this pretty much hits it on the head.

Gid rid of "Elevation" and "Desire".  Replace with Streets and WOWY.  Get rid of "Until the End of the World" -- replace with "Bad."  Kill "Staring at the Sun" and replace with "The Fly".  Then thank me for completely fixing the set list.

For what it's worth, I read all the buzz online last night (couldn't listen to mixlr because of another engagement) and immediately bought LA2 tix (already had nosebleed LA1 tix).  The possibility of minor changes to the list each night has me on the edge of my seat!  And if not, I don't mind because ACROBAT and UTEOTW!

I thought this set list was a fantastic change. I saw Pearl Jam steer clear of hits 10 years ago and it was the best show I've seen of theirs. I can't wait to see this tour.

Thought though..
They finally cave on Acrobat. They finally caved on turning back the clock to JTree. Seems like, if anything, they're finally throwing it all out there to say goodbye? They don't need to keep going, but I can see them doing one last greatest hits tour and calling it like it is, maybe coupled with Songs of Ascent (if that were to ever happen). Feels like they're winding down, saying the things they've wanted to say, and now finally giving the fans their secret dream set lists coupled with new stuff.

Either way, interesting set list and I can't wait to see it and hear the new songs live. See you in LA!

Watching some of the vids, I see Bono's arm movements have changed, at least the left one. Is that the one he broke? If so, I can tell it did permanent damage. I wasn't even looking for that, it just stood out. That's gotta suck for him.

I've only watched a few songs, I wonder if he played guitar at all last night. Maybe SATS, will check.

Cryinggg over Larry. *semi seriously*

Can someone describe the hovering "melting iceberg" (at start of show, before band takes the stage)?

Is it all visuals on the long screen (probably), or is a block of ice actually dripping water? What's that about? ty

I felt the same way about One Tree Hill last tour. How may times has U2 gotten each of us through rough spots in our lives?? As for the setlist, mixed feelings...incredibly disappointed Little Things is left out? why would they?? I saw JT30 twice and didn't get Little Things either time. Maybe (hopefully) they'll make a few changes by Boston. Also was hoping they'd bring back 2001 Slane Castle version of Streets...I'd take that over Pride any day! Praises: Staring at the Sun and Wild Horses - THANK YOU MY BOYS. Last, I think all fans around the world collectively DIED with Acrobat last night ~ makes me think: BRING ON ACHTUNG30!!

To anyone saying the crowd looked bored, keep in mind the entire state was under the threat of a tornado outbreak so yes, people did have to keep one eye on what was going on outside.

There was a very slight risk of a small isolated tornado, which is extremely common in the spring and not something people pay much attention to.   So maybe some people from out of town had that on their mind but I don’t think it was a factor in the crowd response.  I thought the crowd was pretty enthusiastic.

Some photog called Danny North took great Tulsa photos. Shows the band and the (maybe sporadic idk) crowd energy. I gotta find this North guy's photos.

Cheers!
Hi Mfrix and welcome to the forum. I tend to agree with you on your setlist "fat" but they are never going to please everyone. I think they need to put some acoustic stuff in there to give all the band members a bit of a breather and whilst they probably have better options than Best Thing, it was a new album single. ABOY is an odd choice when they could pull out Gone or a million other less played core rock songs. But Acrobat. I think that is the answer to all setlist complaints actually. Man, Acrobat. Yeah baby.

I can see them inter-change songs like I Will Follow (for maybe Electric Co.), Desire, Elevation SATS (maybe Stay...?) and All Because of You for songs of similar tempo. They don't seem so crucial to the themes of the show.

Hopefully as they get into their stride we'll see Bad and 40 back on occasions as well.

I was at the show in Tulsa, standing in the GA on the left side closer to the main stage than the b stage. I traveled down from my home in the Kansas City area (Lenexa, Kansas). I was texting with people back home on and off for the first hour of the concert. We actually had tornado warnings in KC so I was checking back home because of that. (To those that might not know, a tornado watch means there is a possible risk and a tornado warning is a confirmed actual tornado.)

Despite that I was mostly able to enjoy the beginning of show, but after I got the all clear from back home I really got into the performance and had a magnificent time. This was my 8th U2 show, my first was Chicago 2009. I’d rate Tulsa my 3rd favorite of the 8 I’ve seen. I didn’t miss the Joshua Tree songs much after seeing JT30 last year. It was great to see all the new new and new old stuff. I counted 12 songs I hadn’t seen live before. Acrobat! and Horses! and finally I see a Pop song! Yes!!!!!

Might try to go again in Omaha in a couple weeks!

So cool to see the energy of the crowd going wild when Bono just stands there and looks cute/emotive. That's a real legend/celebrity! My little angular faced man.

SEAT REVIEW!

We drove from Southern Indiana. It was about a 8 hour drive and we met my parents. They live in central Oklahoma and it was about a two hour drive for them.

We originally wanted GA but my parents didn't want to go through the general admission process again so we got seats and landed some nice lower level 300's. Any lower was anywhere from $200-600 a pop.

Overall, Seats were great! Tulsa crowd was a bit of a bummer. In our row of twenty, only 7-8 of the seats were filled. The screen is magnificent! (no pun intended) Bono said in the middle of the show to turn off the lights but the screen continued to light up the entire arena.

Show starts and the lads walk in under the stage to Winter Beats - I Break Horses. A single I haven't heard since my college days.. around 2011- 2012. I already knew this was going to be a show to remember.

The screen splits, I hear "Nothing to stop this being the best day ever".. instant goose bumps! Everyone around us has their cell phones out checking out the AR. Kids are laughing over the speaking AR Bono.

After a few songs, they play Iris and The Ocean, in which, the screen shows Bono very emotional singing the lyrics.

I was bummed during some of the IE songs . The performance was the exact same from IE Tour, including the video board.

A majority of people in seats only stood during the opening song, BD, and Elevation. I heard a drunken guy yell "Play Streets".

I stayed away from any rehearsals and setlist discussions with no idea what they were going to play. I made a joke on the U2 Friends Facebook group of what I think the setlist might be in Tulsa. I posted a excel sheet I drafted up in five minutes with "Acrobat" repeating down a list of 25 or so items with the closure of "Acrobat (acoustic version)" thinking there was no absolute possibility of them playing the song.

Desire finishes and MacPhisto makes an appearance.. I feel like when I was a kid watching the DVDs.. but this is real! This is the real thing! then I hear it... Larry, tapping on his symbols.. I yell "NO F** ING WAY!" thinking, can this really be?! Acrobat! Played for the first time ever! I was numb. Absolutely mind blown as the edge rips into the guitar solo. You could tell that he has been itching to play it live.

An American Flag drops down behind the stage over American Soul. This is so much better live than on the album.

The show closes with Bono leaving the light bulb spinning and exits out of the back of the arena. Just like they started the IE tour with spinning the light bulb at the start of the show.

It was a bit strange with nothing from Joshua Tree. Some of the locals were disappointed with streets, still haven't found, and others not being played. While it's good to take a break, I can also see why fans are upset the songs being staples in live shows for the band.

There is some improvements.. they could probably go away from some of the stuff from the IE tour but this tour is still so special and different that it feels right.

I absolutely recommend seats! You can grab a beer in peace and not get death threats on the way back to the rail.

Any info on the t-shirts you can buy? I probably shouldn't get one ($$$) but my Zoo TV shirt is in literal tatters. I don't know if there's any place I can look at pictures, then I can decide whether it or my first born is more important.

Hello All,  Here are my thoughts after going to the show.  i was on the floor and the Aug. Reality didn't do much for me i looked at a few peoples phones in front of me when it was starting but looking at a 6" phone screen is so tiny compared to the giant screen.  i made sure to go spoiler free since this was the first show of the tour and stayed off here etc.  first time in 25 years i went to a U2 show and didn't know the setlist!

the intro was ok. i always prefer a loud upbeat start to a show.
i know All because of you has taken some heat from some members on here but it was the first song that to me really went to that next level and it sounded good that night.

i missed the I&E Tour so i enjoyed the Iris - Raised by Wolves part even though i recognized it from the paris release etc.  i can understand those of you who wish it would be changed up.

the HMTMKMKM intermission wasn't that interesting.  same as the fly on i&e tour.  i don't understand why they can't just play another song on the main stage while the crew gets the bstage setup etc.

elevation and Vertigo.  i agree with most.  i mean i don't mind those songs live but one of those would have been enough.    Desire was good. and of Course Acrobat was incredible.  however the Macphisto part at the beginning needs some work.   would really like to see someone who could have created a snapchat like filter that actually looked like the 93 macphisto instead of the devil face they had there.  and it wasn't working great so hopefully will have kinks worked out tonight.

was great to hear Staring at the sun again.  i enjoyed the visuals for it.

Pride.....   So the beat starts playing and then Adam kicks in with a great Bassline it sounded fantastic in the arena.   Listen i will be the first to say i've been burnt out on hearing the boys sing Pride over the last 2 decades but this sounded better than i've ever heard it that night.   just musically fantastic.

GOYOW and American Soul  sounded just like you would expect and i enjoyed it   City of Blinding lights for main set closer.  was ok i guess

Wilde Horses sounded excellent and was probably my highlight of the night even over acrobat
One - the band messed up the first 30 seconds or so.  recovered ok

13 as the closer.   from a theme perspective it fits but man i would have loved for them to go out on an upbeat moment.  that's why i loved walk on as the closer on the elevation tour.

All told it was a great night.  Edge missed a few notes here and there but nothing major.

Still my favorite band!

Watching the American Soul performance (after just listening on Mixlr) makes me realize their elimination of JT from the set list after JT30 was made a lot easier with this song being on SOE. There's only enough room in the show for one song where Bono breaks out the star-spangled megaphone he's fallen in love with and if you're a band that's confident in your new material, as I feel they still are, you can't drop the new song over the classic that got its own tour (plus you'd probably be dropping GOOYOW which the band particularly love).

Also, this rendition of One is a Hear Me Calling verse shy of being the new definitive version of the song in my book. The arrangement is the best it's sounded since PopMart, and as cool as the psychedelic Keith Haring video on that tour was this video adds a whole new dimension of emotion. Such a simple idea that pays off so devastatingly well.

I've listened to this show in its entirety about 3 times now and each time I've noticed more things about it that have me not losing sleep over missing out on them this time around...  'Blackout' is very sloppy, and right from the outset...  Larry is clearly lagging on the tempo and it's very noticeable as soon as his drums kick in...  His drumming improves as the night goes along, but it's very uncharacteristic of him not to be his usual rock solid self...  'Lights of Home' drags as well, and I'm perplexed as to why they opted for the symphony version instead of just rocking it out, especially since it's near the beginning of the show...  I have to go back to some of the PopMart shows to find a sloppier performance by the band...  It's not the best setlist to begin with, and to have them not live up to the expectations of their live prowess spells out disappointment in my books...:-)

They should keep 13, but play it after City Of Blinding Lights, to close out the main set, thus leaving the encore for classic cuts that don’t thematically fit with “the story”.

Seriously, think about it: that’s their rationale for running the setlist such as they are, but, as good as it mostly is for diehards, it certainly leaves casuals feeling cold, especially those in areas where they weren’t graced with the JT30 tour.
