Title: **SPOILERS** St. Louis #U2eiTour May 4, 2018 Official Thread
Post by: laoghaire on May 04, 2018, 02:00:17 PM
May the 4th be with St. Louis tonight.

The big question tonight is: will there be any change-ups on the setlist, and if so, what and where?

Willie says the second night is when the wheels come off - if that's the case, here's hoping it's FUN.

I know this thread is a little early but what the heck.

After it happens, would be curious if anyone had luck seeing the band pre-soundcheck for pictures or autographs in STL.  Thanks!

So wheel thing that was spotted on stage during soundcheck.  Is it a "spin the wheel to select the next song" kind of thing or a "Macphisto needs something to play with" kind of thing?

Just wondering, so what time do they come on for this tour.  What time did it start in Tulsa?

Thanks, good to know when I go to Montreal.  I always wished the venues would post a countdown or something on the TV in the halls in the venue so you know when they are coming on.  It would be nice to know if you are having drinks or at the merchandise booth or buying food, how much time you have before the show starts.  I remember one time when I went to see Mellencamp, an announcement came on the loudspeaker that Mellencamp would be taking the stage shortly and to make your way to your seats.  I said, to myself, why don't they do this for all shows?

I thought there was a melting iceberg (what happened to your face of melting snow haha). Atu2 twitter said so. Any minute now! San Jose CA will be even later due to timezones.

Laog, I was looking on #u2 IG for merch stand pics but couldn't find any pics for you.

Setlist has been posted on twitter again.  A couple of changed but more songs removed than added and i'm very surprised by a couple of the removals.

They realized 27 songs is too long for their moldie bones. I feel Bono and his athletic performing style.

Thanks for looking for the merch skelter! I see on Twitter there is a problem with not having the stock and a mention they might sell on u2.com later.

I don't know what they cost, let's say $40 (hope that's not a hilariously low estimate). My last one lasted (sort of) 26 years so that's $1.54/year, which is totally reasonable.

Wild Horses isn't on the list?? And everyone feels it was good. What the heck.

It's annoying, but it's still damn cool that we get these streams at all.

I still think that it sucks for St. Louis that they won’t play any JT songs, given their canceled show last year. Seriously, 13 here’s synths would segue into Streets really well, thus ending the show on a high energy note, while also giving St. Louis a JT tune.

Just got back from the show and I agree.  It is disappointing that we got zero acknowledgement from the band about the show we lost, not to mention two less songs than Tulsa got on Wednesday.  I still enjoyed the show for the most part (the political stuff on the big screens got really old really fast), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed.

My suspicion is that, once word gets out, that it may even have an effect on selling the remaining tickets.

I think it will.  U2 used to be great at getting their political stuff out there without ticking anyone off, but there is definitely a large segment of the American population that will be very put-off by the stuff being shown on the big screens this tour.

Sorry for the StL attendees who thought they might get any hint of a missed jt tour bonus lol. This band can't play Streets currently. They need rehearsal for everything. And for just 1 city? You can tell it's never worth it for them. I thought Bono might throw in a fluff line about "your city is unsafe but we love you somewhat".

Coming up they have lots of blue state cities. Maybe it was the plan to finish the red state dates first...

That is true, but considering how things are in this country right now (I have never seen us this divided), I think it is a missed opportunity to really go the high road and preach about coming together.  Sure, Bono talks that at the concert, but the images on the screen (which will stick with people more) said another thing.

Were you listening to Bono between the songs at all? The postponed concert was referenced at least three or four times when St. Louis was mentioned, it was most of the intro spoken before New Year’s Day. I mean Bono’s last mention of St. Louis at the end of the concert  was a “Thank you for your patience” which I took as a direct reference to the cancelled JT show.

I must have missed that.  It is not always easy to hear everything he says in between songs.

I guess I was expecting too much, thinking the band would put some thought into our city losing our show last year and giving us a little something extra this time, instead of giving us less than Tulsa got on Tuesday.  Sure, we got 23 songs played by the band (pre-recorded songs don't count in the set list), but at about 2 hours and 10 minutes, it seemed a bit short.  Show usually go to 11 or just before, and with an 8 pm start, I was expecting a nice long show.  Instead they kept us waiting and started 40 minutes late and gave us a shorter show. Maybe I am just being grumpy, but I am usually euphoric after a concert and gushing over it, and this one just left me a bit cold.

It'll be interesting to see if 'New Year's Day' gets dropped after this show...  Considering Bono's apologetic remarks before they played it, perhaps this was their offering to St. Louis for last year's cancellation...  Although 'New Year's Day' isn't from the album, obviously, it was indeed played on every night of the tour...:-)

What a difference a few albums make..    I haven’t seen them since the Vertigo tour and almost felt bad for them last night.    While the crowd seemed to have stood the entire time, the sing alongs to every song and literal up and down movement on the floor was clearly missed.

The highlight, IMO, was UTEOTW.   The new stuff came off great with the exception of YTBTAM.    That needs to be reworked.   I am a big fan of ABOY but except for the last verse of the song, it just didn’t work.   I would expect that one to get dropped soon.   I also like 13, but that shouldn’t have been the closer.   The theatrics that they do is out of place for U2 and I personally didn’t like it.    Hats off to them for not playing any TJT but they could have closed with one of them last night to GREAT effect.   A one-off of Streets or WOWY would have added significantly, and appropriately, to an otherwise good St Louis show.

Same here.

Bands I am not a fan of, I don't bother talking about much at all.

U2 is a borderline top 10 all-time band for me, so it goes without saying that I love their music, and I think most would agree that the high standards they are held to are ones they set in place.

I still think the new album is really, really good, but unlike the old days when they would often make songs better live, I think it was the opposite this time.  Had I never heard anything from the new album, going to the show Friday would not have made me want to run out and get it.  A big part of that is how far Bono's voice has fallen in the live environment, but I am not sure the laid back nature of Songs of Experience translates well live.

It really is. I thought the show was peak U2, and peak rock and roll. I had a great time and thought this was a well designed, well paced masterpiece of a show. It will definitely get better the more they practice, and I'll look for a chance to go again, particularly if they come through Texas on a second leg.

For me, the politics were very muted for a U2 show, which is what I was hoping for. There was no big "thank you for giving us these lives" speech. Bono and the boys had a rock attitude (and punk sloppiness), the intermission and Macphisto stuff were excellent theater and I loved the AR overlay on the screen.

The pace was nonstop and the intensity and mood were shifted masterfully by the design and set list.

I thought the new album songs sounded so much better in these arrangements and gave me a new appreciation. This was the best version of YTBTAM I've heard, ditto SBS which is one of my least favorite songs and always a mood killer for me (but I know to expect it :)). I also don't care for Pride, but the video presentation was powerful for me this time around. Yes, I hate Illinois Nazis. :)

I'm a longtime fan who only started going to shows on 360 and while that one will always be special, E+I might be my favorite U2 show. It wasn't just a band playing hits, it was a band (and hundreds of support staff, artists, family, etc.) trying their hardest to create a killer rock show and multimedia spectacle. The amount of work and creative energy that went into this is staggering, and I'm damn happy and grateful to have it in the world. :)

To those of you who didn't enjoy it as much as I did, I offer a hug and a handshake and a sincere wish that someday you find what you're looking for. :)

Just read on atu2.com. So jelly actress Ashley Judd (never heard of her) got to attend soundcheck in StL.

Also, the band themselves soundchecked in StL. By 10 shows in, it'll just be the techs soundchecking and band will fly in at like 4pm local time (as they did on jt2017).

I think Ashley Judd, who I have indeed heard of, is a big fan.

I think she and Ali look a bit alike. Hmm.

I've been thinking about the show over the last 48 hours or so, and keep coming back to one word: "okay".  And, let's be honest - we go to see U2 live for those euphoric moments.  I had that feeling of euphoria after my first U2 show (Indy 2001), during the Chicago run of the 2015 tour, and a couple TJT shows last summer.

This, to me, was reminiscent of the Vertigo show I saw in 2005.  There were moments of brilliance, but it wasn't sustained.  Whenever they built momentum, odd song selection or a flubbed performance stopped things in their tracks (albeit temporarily). Overall, the highlights to me were the first set (though I felt the omission of RBW was curious, as it is perhaps THE highlight of the SOI songs), and the beginning of the second set (high-energy, fun, and a little demonic with MacPhisto's return).  But, the run from Get Out of Your Own Way to the end of the show was . . . hmm, how to say . . . "meh"?

One thing that I tried to wrap my head around before the show: no Streets.  Let's be honest - it's one of the best live songs of all-time, and I mean by ANY band.  TJT tour aside, certain acts keep certain songs in their set no matter what.  Imagine seeing Springsteen without the release you get from "Born to Run".  I loved seeing "Acrobat" as much as the next hardcore fan, but I couldn't help but think Streets after Pride would have been the emotional peak, after which GOOYOW-American Soul-COBL would have been A-OK.

I may be talking a bit in circles, but I did leave the show somewhat disappointed.  The shows I saw in 2015 each left me emotionally spent; this one had me checking my watch during the encore.  I have to think the band notices the reactions, through two shows, aren't like they were during the 2015 tour.  I hope they wouldn't consider adding "Streets" as an admission of defeat, or that the tour concept isn't good (it IS a good concept, but needs some restructuring).  But some of their best live songs are sitting out there, and yet we get another tepid version of "One".

I'm hitting up Chicago, and as of now, both nights.  I can't believe I'm saying this, but if setlists don't get changed up a bit, I may sell my N2 ticket.  Then again, the other part of me wonders how many more opportunities I have to see my favorite band.  They clearly put a lot of thought into this tour, and the new songs mean a lot to them.  I respect them for what they're trying to do, but compared to most every other U2 concert, I didn't enjoy it at nearly the same level.

I've seen Streets performed so many times that I could live without it.
Also, I really didn't like RBW.  So sometimes it just comes down to personal preference.  But hopefully we all get a little bit of our favorites in the mix.

I woke up the next morning sort of disappointed but it has since passed.    Regardless, I agree with your sentiment.   I, for one, could have done without One but Streets is kind of indispensable.    That is there BIG NUMBER and should be included.    Hopefully they do so before Chicago.    It will be interesting to see the upcoming San Jose set lists.

FWIW, I thought American Soul was seriously awesome.    I don’t know if it was because my expectations were low or what but they killed it.

If they were thinking about tinkering around with the setlist & including Streets anywhere, you'd think St Louis would be the place they'd do it. As an acknowledgement that TJT was missed there. Pity they didn't try it out there, & see how much of an effect it had on the last 1/3 of the set.

Yea, that was great.  Based on what has happened on previous U2 visits (lost Game 7 of the World Series when they were here for TJT), I would have bet we would have lost the Friday night game.

Was one of my least favorites on the album; not so much any more.   I’ll definitely be watching for that one if I make it to another show.   Am thinking about road tripping down to Nashville but haven’t been able to snag a GA ticket.

This was my 10th U2 show - going all the way back to '87, and I thought it was really, really good!  Especially because the new album is stronger and they only played 2 songs from SOI.  I agree that 27 songs should be the norm with these ticket prices and no opening act.  (Not sure why STL got cut down to 25).  I bet they'll add Streets before too long.  Fewer phone videos being shot, which was nice.  Joe's sound mix was as good as usual.  13 is not a great closer.  It was great to hear Acrobat, Staring at the Sun and All because of you.  Now, if they'd just drop Sunday Bloody Sunday and add God ptII....  As a whole, I thought it was WAY better than I+E in 2015 (chicago 3).  If it comes to your town, or near your town, I'd say go!  Cheers!

I'm thrilled to hear s couple of reports of AS being strong live. I had been hoping we might find that. As I've said before, Bullet is (imho) weak on the album but an absolute monster live. Not saying AS is a monster, but maybe it has potential over time.

I find it extremely hard to believe Adam forgot how to play Streets. Honestly, his resume reads something like this:

Bass playing for Where the Streets Have No Name (31 years of near constant experience) and other songs.

Also Bono has been forgetting the lyrics the entire time. There's a vid where he messes up Out of Control by singing a line from the second verse first, then when he comes up to the line again he goes "again?" and then just abandons it. He was 20. (Note: granted, he was drunk. But we all know other examples of losing track of or just playing with the lyrics. It's a feature, not a bug.

Man, you guys are making 58 sound scary. I don't think 58 is our peak physically but it normally is mentally - so much experience, and unless there is disease present we shouldn't be losing our acuity or faculties. Generals, CEOs, top surgeons, pilots, bankers, etc, are 58.

Great post.

I know Streets has been played 2 million times, but it is THE live song by U2 and it felt weird not getting it.  Just like Rush always played Tom Sawyer, U2 should always play Where the Streets Have No Name.

I totally agree about Get Out of Your Own Way to the end.  They totally lost me at that point and the ending for the show kinda limped to the finish, after the first 3/4 being mostly really good (despite the many alleged flubs).

Quite a few people at work today asked me how the show was and my reaction each time after a "thinking about it" pause was, "...it was good."  Almost everyone sensed that even that felt like an overstatement, as they have seen my euphoria after other concerts in the last couple years. They know how I talk up a concert the day (or the next work day) after a really great show.  There was none of that today.  And just typing that bums me up, because this is U2 and I had such expectations. :(
